Guide to delivering Sportshall Athletics This document provides coaches with a guide to delivering a six-week coaching programme for primary schools taking part in Sportshall Athletics. The guide along with the training session will allow you to: Have an understanding of the events including rules and key coaching points Deliver a number of sessions that include: o Introducing children to the different events o Helping children get better in the events o Running a testing programme to help select your school squad o Preparing your school squad for competition This document also contains two templates: Testing programme scoresheets Sample teamsheets The events for Sportshall athletics are as follows: Field Events: 1. Chest Push 2. Seated Throw 3. Speed Bounce 4. Standing Long Jump 5. Target Throw Track Events: 1. 1 Lap Sprint 2. 2 Lap Sprint 3. 1 Lap Hurdles 4. 2 Lap Hurdles 5. 2 x 3 Lap Relay 6. 4 x 1 Lap Relay 7. 4 x 1 Lap Hurdle Relay 8. 4 x 1 Lap Obstacle Relay Event explanations can be found within this document

Delivering a six week Sportshall Athletics Programme Week 1: Weeks 1 & 2 should be focused on providing all children with a basic induction to all the events. Begin with a standard warm-up game and stretches, then set up the 5 field events around the hall. Begin by providing a demonstration on each event and talk the children through the key coaching points as indicated at the training session. Split the children up into 5 even groups and send 1 group to each of the field events. Depending on time children should spend 5-10minutes at each station trying the different events and helping each other out. Week 2: This week s delivery should be similar to week 1 but begin with some sprinting games to warm-up. Week 3: Weeks 3&4 can be spent on testing on recording children s performance. Begin again with a warm-up game and then commence with some sprinting trials. This can be done in a number of ways depending on your facility and available equipment. You will need a teacher to support with this or a reliable child. The ideal scenario is to set up a 25m two-lane sprint track with a reverse board or cones at either side. If you do not have a 25m space then a 15m track can be set-up and the children will run double the laps outlined in this programme (i.e. a 1-lap trial would be a 2-lap trial and the 2- lap trial would take place over 4-laps)

The first trial is a 1-lap sprint (1 lap is demonstrated in the diagram below). You should time one lane and the teacher/supporting pupil should time the other lane. Record the times on the scoresheet provided (see template scoresheet). The second track trial is a 2-lap sprint. Again scores should be recorded on the scoresheet. The final sprint trial for this week should be the 1-lap Hurdles. One hurdle should be positioned on the track as demonstrated in the diagram below. Competitors should jump over the hurdles both ways. Record the competitor s times on the scoresheet. The 2 nd Part of the session should be spent testing two of the field events. In week 3 test the Speed Bounce and the Chest Push. If you have a supportive teacher you can get them to record the performances of half the group on one of the activities whilst you record the scores of the other half of the group on the other field events. Once all of the competitors in each group have completed their trials the groups swap over and trial out in the other field event. All scores can be recorded on the scoresheet in this pack. *You may wish to set out the other field events for children to have open practice sessions on whilst awaiting a turn on the trial events. Week 4: Begin again with a warm-up game and then commence with an endurance trial. The set-up for an endurance trial is the same as for sprints (i.e. set up the two lane track). The endurance trial will take place over 4-laps of the standard 25m track (or 8-laps if you are using a 15m track).

The 2 nd Part of the session should be spent testing the remaining three field events. You should again split the group into two halves. You run two trials the Standing Long Jump then the Seated Throw whilst your support teacher runs the target throw trial (as target throw takes longer you should have time to complete the Standing long Jump and Seated Throw with Group 1 in the same time as it takes Group 2 to complete the Target throw). The two groups should then switch over. Week 5 & 6 In between weeks 4 & 5 you will have hopefully analysed your trial results and will be able to select a team consisting of 10-boys and 10-girls. You should also be able to work out which individuals should be in which event. Weeks 5 & 6 can then be spent supporting the children in improving themselves in their individual events as well as working on running speed and in particular focusing on baton changing. The week 5 & 6 sessions can be set-up as follows: Warm Up Field Event Practise children practise the field event they have been selected for (children not selected for the team can try their favourite event Track practice Reactions, 20m standing sprint start drills Relay practice Baton changing drills as demonstrated in the training session (in week 6 try spend longer on this and see if they can remember what you have told them the week before).

A guide to the Field Events The Seated Throw The competitor sits on a standard gym bench with both feet flat against the floor. The ball is thrown using both hands from behind the head (as in a soccer throw in). The thrower must remain in contact with the bench and with both feet flat on the floor during the throw. A standard size basketball is used The throwing area will be marked at 25cm intervals (parallel to the bench- not a quadrant). The judges will record the distance at the point where the ball lands to the nearest 25cm (taking the lower figure where it lands between lines). Each competitor is allowed 3 throws. The Chest Push Chest push is a throwing event, slightly replicating the action of the shot putt. The Chest Push is a standing throw where a basketball is pushed as far as possible. The chest push is very similar to a basketball chest pass with the only main difference being that the action must be done from standing and also the ball is thrown for distance. The event is measured using a measure mat (as per the seated throw). A standard size basketball is used Competitors are allowed three attempts. Standing Long Jump A special calibrated long jump mat is used for recording the jumps. The athlete starts with both feet against the starting block; a no jump is recorded if either foot is over the block before a jump is made. Techniques involving a crouch or rock leading up to the jump are permitted, providing both feet are alongside each other and retain contact from the start of action to the actual start of the jump - a one footed take off is not allowed.

Landing must be on the pre-measured section of the calibrated mat. An athlete can step forward after the jump, but any step back or touching the mat behind the feet by any part of the body counts as a no jump. Each competitor is allowed 3 attempts. Speed Bounce A foam based speed bounce mat with a 200mm high foam wedge dividing it into 2 equal halves will be used. The competitor must use suitable footwear and bounce with two feet together from side to side over the centre of the wedge with both feet touching the ground to record the count. The count will start and finish by a whistle under the control of the timekeeper. Each competitor is allowed 2 attempts. Target Throw The competitor stands behind the start line. There are four baskets placed at 3, 5, 7, and 9m distances. Each competitor has 20 beanbags (5 Blue, 5 Red, 5 Green, 5 Yellow) and has to throw them into one of the four baskets. The competitor should try get the beanbag into the basket of the same colour 1-point is awarded if the competitor gets the beanbag into the same coloured basket.

Track Events All track events start and finish in the middle of the sports hall and competitors must turn at each end of the sports hall by using one foot on the reversaboard. 1 Lap = Hitting 2 reversaboards and back to the middle of the hall 2 Lap = Hitting 4 reversaboards and back to the middle of the hall 1 Lap Individual Sprint One lap race for one competitor from each school. 2 Lap Individual Sprint Two lap race for one competitor from each school. 1 Lap Individual Hurdles One lap race for one competitor from each school over small hurdles 2 Lap Individual Hurdles Two lap race for one competitor from each school over small hurdles 2 x 3 Lap Distance Race A six-lap race with a team of two competitors from each school. The first competitor will complete 3 complete laps (6 boards) before passing to the second team member to complete another 3 complete laps. Moving changeovers are allowed

4 x 1 Lap Relay 1. The first runner starts as in a normal race on the start line in the middle of the sports hall 2. They run to and turn on the reversaboard and runs to the opposite end of the hall and turn on the reversaboard 3. As the first runner turns on the second reversaboard the second runner gets up from the team mat ready to receive the baton 4. The baton must always be exchanged as the competitor is running towards the first reversaboard and moving changeovers are allowed 5. The first runner then immediately sits down on the team mat to avoid obstructing the running member 6. This procedure is followed by the third and forth running member - but the last runner must make sure that she/he crosses the finishing line 4 x 1 Lap Hurdles Relay Race 1. The first runner starts as in a normal race on the start line in the middle of the sports hall 2. The first runner runs over the hurdles on the way to the reversaboard and turns on the reversaboard and runs to the opposite end of the hall crossing the hurdles towards the reversaboard 3. As the first runner turns on the second reversaboard the second runner gets up from the team mat ready to receive the baton 4. The first runner passes the baton to the second runner and immediately sits down on the team mat to avoid obstructing the running member 5. The baton must always be exchanged as the competitor is running towards the first reversaboard and moving changeovers are allowed 6. This procedure is followed by the third and forth team member - but the last runner must make sure that she/he crosses the finishing line.

Obstacle Relay 1. The first runner starts as in a normal race on the start line in the middle of the sports hall 2. The first runner races to the obstacle and completes a full rotation around it. 3. Runs back past the obstacle, passes the start and then over a small hurdle. 4. Turn on the reversaboard and back to the next team member 5. The first runner passes the baton to the second runner and immediately sits down on the team mat to avoid obstructing any other teams. 6. The baton must always be exchanged as the competitor is running towards the first reversaboard and moving changeovers are allowed 7. This procedure is followed by the third and forth team member - but the last runner must make sure that she/he crosses the finishing line. Mixed relay is the same as the 4 x 1 lap sprint relay. MOVING CHANGEOVERS ARE ALLOWED ON ALL RELAYS!
