1 Comfortex Rest-Q mattress Comfortable, Constant, Quiet...Pressure Relief Stratos Top Cover is waterproof and can be easily wiped clean. Stratos fabric is the industry s best protection against MVT. Highly Resilient Layer of Cushioning material conforms to subtle bony prominences. This layer spans over the entire surface to create a perfect blend of pressure reduction and patient comfort. Patents Pending Ultra Firm Edges makes transferring in and out of bed safer and easier. Super Soft Strip of Engineered Polymer provides pressure relief where needed most. When side laying, hips and shoulders benefit from this pressure relieving area. Handles Shown are actually positioned with reinforced stitching to the underside of the mattress to prevent accidental heel entrapment when patients are exiting the bed. Lateral Support Sections provide cushioning support beneath the patient along each side of the spinal column. Slightly softer at the shoulders, slightly firmer beneath the hips. Unique Heel Suspension System virtually floats the heels across a low pressure environment. Weight limit The Rest-Q comfortably supports patients weighing lbs. We have had zero breakdown... We love the Rest-Qs, it was the only product that performed to our expectations and since our purchase we have had zero breakdown. RN, DON, Greeley, CO It put more expensive specialty beds to shame... This facility deals primarily with MS and Spinal Cord Injuries. The patients we have had on the Rest-Q have had nothing but praise for the mattress. Our PT department did its own pressure testing and the results blew them away. It put more expensive specialty beds to shame. RN, Philadelphia, PA Comfortex An Avatar Enterprises, Inc. company Wilkie Drive Winona, MN Toll Free Phone (507) Fax (507)
2 Comfortex Rest-Q Mattress Clinical Application ( Pressure relief for increased comfort, pain management and wound care. Stages 1-4 ) The Rest-Q was developed and has proven to provide body absorbing comfort, pressure reduction and pressure relief to the areas most prone to breakdown. Beneath the patient s heels, spinal column and hips (when side laying), ultra soft portions of the mattress allow these sensitive areas to virtually float between the mattresses more supportive materials. When compared to more costly therapeutic surfaces, the Rest-Q consistently demonstrates superior pressure reduction. This advanced pressure reduction is no substitute for Nursing Care. Preventing and treating pressure related problems requires vigilant care. No support surface can or should be considered a substitute for the care nursing provides. You re what really makes the difference. Product Use Top Cover The dark blue nylon top cover reduces shear forces. This fabric is both water & vapor proof. It can be wiped clean with properly diluted hospital cleaning solutions. Should the top cover ever become damaged, it can be zipped off and replaced. Suspended Heels The Rest-Q mattress has a specially designed foot-end to suspend & protect sensitive heels. The foot-end of the mattress is labeled and should always be properly positioned on the bed. Supported Suspended Built in Bridging for the Sacral area, Spinal Column & Hips. Along with the pressure relieving heel area, the mattress has a soft strip that passes from head to foot beneath the patient s spinal column. This soft material gently absorbs the bony prominences along the spine & sacral area. Firmer material along each side of this pressure relieving strip supports the patient, helping to bridge the body s more sensitive areas. When turning someone onto their side, try to position their hips over this pressure relieving area in the middle of the mattress.

4 The following are the results from a case study conducted during an evaluation of the Comfortex Rest-Q mattress by the Wound Care Nurse at the VA Medical Center in Pittsburgh, PA. The patient, 79 year old male, who has S/P fracture left hip. He has multiple ulcers ( 4 sites ). The patient has a history of dementia. His appetite has been inconsistent. He is incontinent of both bowel and bladder. July 23rd, 2003 Patient is placed on a Comfortex Rest-Q mattress. The Wound Care Nurse that who conducted this case study shared that she was amazed by the results she had seen, taking into consideration the patient s fluctuating health. The patient continues to heal and rest comfortably on the Rest-Q mattress. The Nurse jokingly said that her patient would fight her for that mattress if she tried to take him off of it. He is very pleased and very comfortable. Pain Reduction Study The German Institute of Healthcare Research studied the effect that two of Europe s leading, yet very different pressure reducing mattresses would have on patients suffering with chronic pain. The mattresses used in this study were the Tempur Visco Elastic mattress and the Comfortex Engineered Polymer mattress. low, up to 5x per shift medium, up to 15x per shift high, 15x per shift Awaking as a result of pain All but 2 patients reported changes in their level of pain & discomfort when moved from the standard hospital mattress. The number of patients who awoke as a result of pain was reduced by 21% on the Visco mattress and reduced by 52% on the Comfortex mattress. Number of Call Lights answered for each patient requesting help with pain The number of call lights was reduced by 18% when on the Visco mattress and by 43% when on the Comfortex mattress. ( see graphs ) low, up to 5x per shift medium, up to 15x per shift high, 15x per shift Requested pain medication The need for pain medications was not reduced for Patients on the Visco mattress. However, pain medication dosages were reduced by 24% during the nighttime hours and by 16.5% during daytime hours for Patients on the Comfortex surface. Conclusion This Institute suggests that pressure reducing mattresses can have a positive effect on pain reduction and the quality of life for those dealing with painful ailments. This study also concluded that the Comfortex mattress had made a significant contribution towards the comfort and well-being of their test subjects. 3

Diagnosis: type II diabetes, end stage renal failure (on dialysis 3 x week), right leg amputation, atrial fib, bradycardia with pacemaker, stage III decubitus ulcers, hypothyroidism, depression, peripheral vascular disease and history of small bowel obstruction. Patient receives 23 hours per day of home health nursing. Patient is assisted with all activities of daily living. Bed/chair bound, transfers with a hoyer lift. Prior to being placed on the Comfortex Rest-Q mattress, the patient was using a hospital mattress with an air overlay.
