Care and Construction Care and Construction Thank you for purchasing a mattress from European Sleep Works! We appreciate your business, and we re always here to answer any questions you may have about your new bed. Throughout the lifespan of your mattress, you ll have access to our highly trained staff, who are ready to assist you with all of your bed and bedding needs. This product manual will help you to get to know your new mattress system and addresses the most frequently asked questions. If you need more information, please feel free to contact us by phone at (510) or us at info@sleepworks.com. Thanks again, and congratulations on your new bed purchase! We hope it will provide you with great sleep for years to come. The Basics: Quick Tips Allow 1 Month for Break In Your new mattress may initially feel a bit firm. Allow approximately one month for your mattress to break in. Avoid Tight-Fitting Linens For best performance and comfort, we recommend using loose-fitting bed linens. This helps minimize surface tension. Mattress Construction and Care Inside Your mattress consists of an external cotton and wool zippered cover and internal independent coil and/or latex foam components. The internal components are specifically layered your mattress has a top and a bottom. The zipper in your cover identifies the top and is located along the top edge of the mattress. Never flip your mattress. You may balance wear in your mattress by rotating it 180 degrees (head-to-foot) every two years. If you purchased a pillow top, we recommend you also rotate and fluff this piece when changing your sheets. Cover While your mattress cover and pillow top covers have zippers, they are NOT washable or dry cleanable. These covers are generously lined with wool and will shrink dramatically if washed. You may spot clean your cover with warm water and a gentle detergent and air dry. You should protect your mattress by using a washable mattress pad. The Oxygen mattress pad is specially designed to protect your mattress while preserving the feel and performance of your mattress surface. It is made of 100% organic stretch knit cotton and is machine washable and dryable. If you purchase the Oxygen mattress pad, it should be pre-shrunk with hot water before use. Don t Flip Your mattress is internally constructed with a top and bottom. Never flip your mattress. Check Your Frame for Center Support To prevent instability and center sag, your frame should have a leg in the center of the bed (see Center Supports on page 7). Pre-Shrink Your O2 Mattress Pad If you purchased an O2 mattress pad, pre-shrink with hot water before use. Do Not Wash The Cover of It is lined with wool and will shrink. Spot clean only with cool water and a mild detergent. 3 4

Components Slat Settings Pillow Top HEAD Mattress Flexible Slats Flexible Slats High Profile Flexible Slat System Universal Bedlegs or Metal Bed Frame or Wooden (not included) Bed Frame (not included) Slat Close-Up: Note: Rows 1-4 have two sliders; Rows 5 and 6 have four. Bottom Slat Top Slats Slider Shock Queen Box Components in ESW Full System The ESW Full System is comprised of a pillow top, a mattress, and a flexible slat suspension. Your Flexible Slats The flexible slat suspension is available in a high, low, or low wood profile. The high profile is 6-1/2 high and is designed for box-spring style bed frames and Universal Bedlegs. The low profile is 4 high and is for platform style bed frames. We also offer a lower 2-3/4 wood profile for platform style frames. In twin and queen sizes, the system is one box. In Eastern king and California king sizes, this box splits into two (like a box spring). The system should be placed properly in the frame, with zones 1-6 oriented from head to toe (see page 6). Your Slat Settings FOOT C. King Box Numbers 1 through 6 indicate the adjustable areas of your slat system. Number 1 adjusts below the shoulder, 2 at the waist, 3 and 4 at the hip area, and 5 and 6 at the thigh and knee. Generally, as you move the sliders on each adjustable slat set together, the slats provide lift, and as you move them apart, they give. Your slat settings indicate the measurement in inches between each set of sliders on each set of slats. The universal slat settings we give you are designed to be comfortable and to support your body in a variety of sleeping positions. If you have any questions about adjusting your slats, please call us. 5 6

Center Supports Moving and Storing About Center Supports Full/Queen Center Support as shown on a wooden platform bed frame Three center supports as shown on a wooden platform bed frame King Universal Bedlegs supports Every bed frame that is full size or larger must have a center support for maximum stability. Many frames size queen and larger will have a center support already installed. If you have a bed frame with no center support, install at least one before your mattress arrives. For optimum support, consider installing 3 center supports one in the center, one halfway between the head of the bed and the center, and one halfway between the foot and the center (see middle picture above). Our Universal Bedlegs have center legs included in the Full, Queen, and King sets (see inset above). Latex Mattress: Keep mattress in cover; roll in half: move as-is Alpine Mattress: Carefully remove latex from cover: zip coils in cover; move mattress Nordic or Nordic II: Carefully remove top coil layer from cover: zip base coils into the cover; move the mattress Tips for moving your mattress Your ESW mattress is built differently than a conventional mattress. Because it is both heavy and flexible, moving your mattress requires some special consideration. We recommend unzipping your mattress cover and moving the internal components separately. This makes the mattress both lighter and easier to maneuver. Do not try to transport or store your mattress by standing it vertically on end. This can damage the coils. Unzip and pull back your mattress cover. Remove the top component layer this will be either a micro coil topped with 1 of latex foam or a separate 2 layer of latex foam. The micro coil can be rolled up like a carpet and gently removed. Be sure that the latex layer is on the outside, and that you do not roll it too tightly. Zip your cover back up with the base coil inside. Do not bend base coils in half. Your mattress components are soft and are best transported flat and stored safely. Keep the mattress in a dry and dark location with proper ventilation. Flexible slat system boxes can be stored and transported flat with slat side up or vertically on end with the slat side free from contact with other furniture or boxes. Reassembling the mattress: reverse your steps. Place your mattress cover with the base coil inside on your slats (be sure the slat box is properly oriented from head to toe in the frame). Next, place your top layer on top of the base coil. Make sure all parts are stacked neatly and flush to each other at the edges. Be sure that your cover is squared with the piping even along the bottom edge. Zip your cover closed. 7 8

What To Expect: a Timeline What To Expect: a Timeline What will your mattress feel like the first week? What about at year five or ten? Below we ve outlined what you can expect over the lifetime of your mattress. The First Week All the materials in your mattress and slats are new and need time to fully break in. It takes about a month of use for your mattress to stretch and adapt to you. Likewise, your body is adapting to the feel of your new mattress and flexible slat suspension. To make your break in period more comfortable, we recommend avoiding overly tight-fitting sheets. While a flat snug fit may look tidy, it can make your mattress feel firmer and create surface tension. We also recommend protecting your mattress with an Oxygen Mattress pad. Made from stretch knit cotton, it provides washable protection without creating a tight-fitting barrier between you and your mattress. This mattress pad requires pre-shrinking before use. Also, be sure your new mattress and slats are in a frame that has one or more center supports (see page 7). The First Two Months After the first month, your mattress should feel more pliable and fully broken in. You should also have become accustomed to your new bed. If your mattress feels comfortable there is no need to make any changes. If you think you may want to modify the firmness of your mattress, now is a good time to call us and discuss a comfort exchange. Comfort Exchange components during this period. The zippered mattress cover makes it easy to remove and exchange parts. For a delivery fee, parts will be brought to your home and installed by our delivery staff. At Five Years Your mattress will wear gradually as it ages Call us if you have any questions or need help You may need to replace your pillow top cover Your ESW mattress is designed using high quality materials to perform reliably over its lifetime. What you should expect is a gradual, incremental arc of wear over a ten-year period. Mattress wear is affected by a number of factors including body weight, humidity, the firmness of construction, and proper frame support. At five years, your mattress is still providing support and comfort, but may be starting to show signs of wear. If you have any questions about your mattress condition or your comfort, call us. We are happy to help. If you own a pillow top, you may notice that the wool in the cover has flattened. This is normal wear as the wool fibers become compacted under the weight of the body. You may want to consider replacing the cover of your pillow top at this time. At Eight to Ten Years Your comfort exchange period is two months There is no charge for new components Parts are delivered and installed for a delivery fee You have two months from your delivery date to make your mattress style either softer or firmer by changing the internal components of your mattress. There is no cost for the new Your mattress may need replacement at 8-10 years Your comfort preferences may have changed At eight to ten years, your mattress may still be comfortable, but it will have wear. Most people replace their mattress at this time. Your comfort preferences and support needs also may have changed. This is a good point in time to evaluate the comfort level of your mattress, and determine if it is time for replacement. 9 10

Frequently Asked Questions Frequently Asked Questions Is this bed the same one I ordered? It feels firmer. Your mattress is new and will need about one month to break in. Initially it will tend to feel firmer, but will gradually begin to feel like the mattress you selected in-store. Using an Oxygen stretch cotton mattress pad and making sure your bedding is not too fitted will allow your mattress to flex and give. Do the slats ever break? Very rarely. But if it happens, we can send a new slat and you can easily replace it yourself: snap in, snap out. You don t need any tools or hardware. Directions are online at sleepworks.com/assembly. What about allergies? All of our mattresses are non-allergenic. Our covers are made of natural organic cotton and lined with wool for breathability. A drier bed has fewer dust mites. Additionally, the top panel of the cover may be removed and aired out or tumble-dried on a no heat setting to aerate and freshen it. The natural latex foam we use is antimicrobial, discouraging mold and mildew. What about chemicals? Our mattresses contain no harmful chemicals, no flame retardant, no formaldehyde, and no dangerous residues that can be inhaled or absorbed. The components of our mattresses have been thoroughly tested and certified 100% clean and safe by Oeko-Tex, an environmental testing agency based in Europe. you sleep on the right mattress, you may find the problem goes away or lessens. But no mattress can be guaranteed as a cure for anything. For the best results, you need the right mattress and the right pillow combination for full-body support and comfort. Is a firm mattress better for my back? Not necessarily. Often, we tend to assume that a firm bed is better because many beds are not supportive enough in the hips, causing your hips to sink into the bed too much. This may lead to lower back discomfort. However, this does not mean that a soft bed is worse for your back. Proper support in a mattress depends upon the strength and flexibility of its components relative to your body shape, weight, and sleeping positions. Our mattresses are built to be both flexible and durable for support that gives without sagging. And we offer a wide range of firmness options from soft to medium to firm. What if things change & I need different support later on? The slat settings you receive cover a fairly wide range of changing needs. But sometimes you may want to try adjusting your slat settings. You can try different slider settings yourself. Or you can call us and we will help you determine how to reposition the sliders to get the best results. Additionally, you may consider purchasing replacement components at a reduced price. Our sales staff is ready to assist you with a range of options to alter your mattress system to meet your comfort needs. With slats set for side-sleeping, can I sleep on my back? Yes. We understand that most people sleep in multiple positions. We ve found in fitting thousands of customers that the base support provided by this sleep system accommodates the differing needs of back and side-sleeping. Will this fix my (back/shoulder/hip) problem? Physical problems have many sources. An unsupportive or uncomfortable mattress can certainly aggravate a condition. And if 11 12
