2 Parts of a Verb All verbs have 4 basic parts. Base form Talk, draw Present participle (helping verb + base form with ing) Is talking, is drawing Past Talked, drew Past Participle (helping verb + past form) have talked, have drawn

3 Regular Verbs Regular verbs add d or ed to form the past or past participle form of verb Clean, cleaned, (has, have, had cleaned) Hope, hoped, (has, have, had hoped) Slip, slipped, (has, have, had slipped)

7 Irregular Verbs Irregular verbs do not add d or ed to form the past or past participle forms of the verbs. Some change the vowels. Sing, sang, (has have, or had) sung Change consonants Make, made, (has, have, or had) made Change both vowels and consonants Do, did, (has, have, or had) done Make no changes Hurt, hurt, (has, have, or had) hurt

12 Tense of a verb The verb tense indicates when the action or state of being is happening.

22 Verb Consistency If talking about events that take place at the same time- do not change the tense of the verb. Consistent When we go to the movies, we buy some popcorn. When we went to the movies, we bought some popcorn. Inconsistent When we go to the movies, we bought some popcorn. Both events take place at the same time- use the same tense of the verb (either both present tense or both past tense).

25 Active Voice Active voice verbs express the action being done by the subject of the sentence. The pilot flew the plane. The pilot is the subject of the sentence and the one doing the flying.

26 Passive Voice Passive Voice verbs express an action done to the subject of the sentence. Passive voice verbs always include a helping verb and the past participle form of the main verb. The plane was flown by the pilot. Plane is the subject of the sentence but is receiving the action instead of doing the action. Verb phrase- was flown (helping verb + past participle)

27 NOTE!! When writing- you should avoid using the passive voice. It makes your writing sound weak and awkward to read. Always try writing in the ACTIVE Voice!

28 Practice Identify whether the sentences are active voice or passive voice. 1. On Sunday afternoon we painted the den. 2. Brianne was elected to the student council. 3. Shoddy work was done on the building. 4. The new animation software creates vivid images.
