3 The goal of Healthy Beginnings is to prevent childhood obesity by helping children to eat better and be more physically active. The Healthy Beginnings (HB) curriculum is a nutrition and physical activity curriculum for children ages 3-5. This curriculum is designed to teach children healthy habits right from the start. There are 13 nutrition lessons designed to teach children about foods that are healthy for their bodies. There are 9 physical activity lessons and 12 animal yoga poses to provide opportunities for structured physical activity that helps promote social/ emotional development and gross motor skills. Integrate the lessons into your overall curriculum on a regular basis. Use the Table of Contents as a reference. Don t be afraid to adapt the lessons for your students. Ideally try to provide a physical activity lesson once a week and repeat it several times so the children have the chance to work on their gross motor skills and provide one nutrition lesson each week. Each lesson has been designed to be used independently, but many of the learning objectives will overlap. Each curriculum card will explain the lesson s learning objective(s) as well as what measure(s) of the Desired Results Developmental Profile - revised (DRDP-r) it meets. The DRDP-r was developed by the California Department of Education as a rating tool to assist educators with documenting the progress made by children age three to Kindergarten. For more information, forms, or training on DRDP-r visit or call (800) For assistance or more information please call (800) or (530) The goal of Healthy Beginnings is to prevent childhood obesity by helping children to eat better and be more physically active. 5 Lesson 1: Can You? Form a large circle with the children. Have everyone stand arms width apart. (Poly squares/spots work great for defining individual space). Guide the children through a variety of movements, initiating each with the challenge, Can you...? Can You? make circles with your arms clap your hands march and clap jump up and down hop on one foot turn in a circle do jumping jacks run in place crawl like a crab touch your toes balance on one foot dance with a partner Activity modified from Star Power for Preschoolers (Redleaf Press, 1997), Andrew Oser, p Lesson 2: Yes Game Demonstrate the game with one child, then divide the group into pairs and give each pair a beanbag, ball or fluff ball. For added success, start with beach balls then progress to smaller balls or beanbags. The children begin standing very close to their partner, gently tossing the ball back and forth. Suggest the children watch the ball hit their hands and say yes when they catch it. The game continues as long as the children have fun and stay focused. Variation Every time a child catches the ball, she can take one step back. Challenge children with well-developed catching skills by having them use only one-hand to catch. Activity modified from Star Power for Preschoolers (Redleaf Press, 1997), Andrew Oser, p. 34 2

Emphasize to children that the hoops stay on the floor. While music is playing, children dance, hop, skip, jump, etc. around the hoops without going inside them. When the music stops, children must stop and get inside a hoop. The children will need to share hoops. Have children move in a different way each time you restart the music (ex: walk and twist, move like a gorilla, etc). Repeat, starting and stopping the music. Eliminate hoops as the game continues. How many friends can fit in a hoop? Activity modified from Moving With a Purpose (Human Kinetics, 2000), McCall & Craft, p Lesson 4: Creeping and Crawling Use tunnels, tables, chairs and blankets to set up an obstacle course that will foster crawling and rolling. Children follow the course, continuously moving as long as they re not bumping into each other. 4

13 Lesson 9: Food Basketball Set up several stations for shooting baskets. Set them at different distances and heights. Keep several bean bags at each station so that children may freely explore and practice. Children choose different stations and play food basketball! Ask children is it a fruit or vegetable, have they ever tasted it, what shape or color is it, etc. 9 Yoga for relaxation and health! Animal Stretches Each pose is named for the animal to which it resembles. Yoga is usually done in silence but to engage young children allow them to make animal sounds. Besides fun, stretching promotes physical strength, flexibility, coordination, and balance. Children do not need to do these stretches perfectly. If children are enjoying stretching, they may be able to hold the pose for 20 seconds. Otherwise, it is okay to move quickly from one pose to the next. You can also work on breathing with the children. This will help them focus and relax. Teach children to take a long, deep breath in through their nose, hold it for a second, and then slowly blow out through their mouth. Arrange children in a large circle and perform the following stretches Star Program Games and Exercises; Animal Stretches: Yoga for Relaxation and Health, Star Power for Preschoolers P

Kneel on all fours with the palms of your hands flat on the floor, shoulder width apart. Keeping your arms straight and shoulders relaxed, raise your head and allow your pelvis to drop, while making meowing sounds. Then let your head drop and arch your back upward while breathing deeply. Go back and forth between these two positions several times. Star Program Games and Exercises; Animal Stretches: Yoga for Relaxation and Health, Star Power for Preschoolers P

15 Lesson 12: Dog Arrange children in a large circle and perform the following stretch. Kneel on all fours with the palms of your hands and knees on the floor and arms straight. Repeat the stretch several times. Star Program Games and Exercises; Animal Stretches: Yoga for Relaxation and Health, Star Power for Preschoolers P Lesson 14: Butterfly Arrange children in a large circle and perform the following stretch. Sit on the floor with knees bent and soles of feet touching. With hands, grab ankles and flap wings by repeatedly lowering knees toward the floor, then raising them. * Unlike most of the animal stretches, this exercise is done silently. It can be very calming after the excitement of some of the louder stretches, such as the Dog and the Lion. Star Program Games and Exercises; Animal Stretches: Yoga for Relaxation and Health, Star Power for Preschoolers P

16 Lesson 13: Snake Arrange children in a large circle and perform the following stretch. Have children follow your lead. Lie down on your stomach with head toward the center of the circle. Lower torso forward until head touches the floor, continuing to keep bottom on heels and placing arms by your side so that hands are close to your feet. Remain in this position for fifteen to thirty seconds, or longer if children are enjoying the rest. *Like the Butterfly, this is a quiet exercise. It allows children to relax deeply after the excitement of the other animal stretches or active games. Star Program Games and Exercises; Animal Stretches: Yoga for Relaxation and Health, Star Power for Preschoolers P Lesson 18: Turtle Arrange children in a large circle and perform the following stretch. Kneel with legs wide apart and sit on heels. Lower upper body so that your forehead touches the floor. Slide your arms forward above your head while continuing to keep your bottom on your heels. Then, holding this position, vigorously open and close your jaw a few times. Star Program Games and Exercises; Animal Stretches: Yoga for Relaxation and Health, Star Power for Preschoolers P Lesson 19: Bird on a Wire Have children stand with their feet slightly apart. Ask children to stand on their toes, stretch their arms out straight behind them and lean slightly forward. This pose helps children balance.

19 Lesson 20: Trees Have children stand with feet slightly apart. Then have children put their arms out like tree branches and move their right foot flat against the inside of their left leg. Repeat with opposite foot. This pose helps children with their balance. Challenge children with good balance by asking them to slide their right foot up and off the ground keeping it against their left leg. 15

20 Lesson 21: Octopus Have children stand and cross their right foot over their left (keep feet on the ground). Then have children put their arms out in front and twist one arm around the other. This pose helps children with their balance.
