Writing Workshops by: Lydia Lukidis offers writing workshops for children from Kindergarten to grade six. She is currently part of the Writers in School Program in the Répertoire de ressources culture-éducation, organized by the Ministre de Culture et Communications Québec. These workshops are subsidized by the Quebec government, interested schools may apply HERE. These workshops are also available for libraries, community centers, camps and private functions. Each workshop begins with an initial presentation and discussion. Following this, students will be guided through a brainstorming session. They will write, discuss and draw out their ideas in order to generate inspiration. They will work alone or in groups depending on the circumstances. The presenter will propose various exercises to get the creative juices flowing and will help the students develop their ideas. Fun elements like the Magic Wheel and Talking Stick will be incorporated in order to add entertainment value and make the lessons engaging. At the end of the workshop, some students will have the opportunity to present their work to the rest of the class.
The exercises and content will be appropriately tailored to the age and abilities of the students. Handouts, study guides and follow up activities will be provided. These workshops are an excellent opportunity for students to: collaborate cultivate their imagination increase self-confidence develop good writing skills and improve literacy develop thinking and cognitive skills tap into creative self-expression Please note that Lydia is also available for school visits and public readings. Reviews Lydia is professional, reliable, easy to work with, innovative, and extremely creative. She is a skilled writer and has a clear passion for her craft. She s also a great teacher. She helped me learn how to write well and create interesting characters. -Jared, ten year old student
The workshops There are currently six different writing workshops available: 1. Character Creation What makes a character memorable? How does one create and develop a fictional character? What are the various character archetypes? These questions will be explored as students invent their own unique character. They will develop comprehensive character sketches that will bring these people, animals and creatures to life. Length: 1 hour Levels: K-6 2. Writing Prompts: Let s get Inspired! Writing prompts are excellent tools to help catalyze the writing process. They inspire and get the creative juices flowing. Students will be assigned various prompts such as What would you do if you won a million dollars? or What super power you would most like to have? These will serve as inspiration for original short stories that the students will write. The goal is to encourage conscious thought process and to unleash the imagination. Length: 1 hour 3. Story Making 101 Students will be introduced to the various genres of literature as well as the main elements in stories. There will be a particular emphasis on conflict and why it s vital. The goal is for children to learn how to structure a simple narrative plot. Popular stories will be examined in order to serve as examples and story maps will be used to help the students organize their ideas. The students will then create their own original tales using story maps provided by the presenter.
4. Fairy Tale Magic Castles, magic wands and royalty, oh my! This workshop is devoted to children who love the magic of fairy tales. They will learn about the historic tradition of fairy tales as well as their basic elements. Some popular tales will be discussed and examined in order to serve as examples. Students will then have a chance to create and write their own unique fairy tale with a contemporary twist. 5. The Power of Myths What is the difference between a story and a myth? This workshop will briefly look at the history of myths and their traditions. Popular myths will be discussed and examined in order to serve as examples. Once the students understand the basic characteristic of myths, they will then create their own original versions. 6. Let s Write a Book! In this workshop, students will collaborate together to create a book. In the first workshop, they will be introduced to the various genres of literature as well as the main elements in stories. They will learn how to structure a simple narrative plot, and will start brainstorming ideas for the story. In the second workshop, the students will collectively create the plot, setting, character sketches and chapter outline. The students will be separated into groups and each group will be responsible for writing a chapter. In the third workshop, the whole story will be put together to create the final draft. Students will then draw pictures to be included in the book. After the workshops are completed, the presenter will do the graphic layout and will get the pages bound. The school will be mailed the final print copy. Length: 3 workshops of 2 hours each
About the author Lydia Lukidis is an author, creator and conceptual artist. Her passion for reading and writing began at a very young age when she started composing poem after poem in her journals. She later acquired her Bachelor degree in English Literature from McGill University and her love for the written word continued to grow. Today Lydia fuses her creativity and skills to educate, inspire and entertain children. Her mandate as an artist is to provoke thought and feeling while having a positive impact on children. Many of her children s creative stories and poems have been published including twenty one ebooks for Smart Kidz Club. Her first children s book, Gerbs in the House: The Dilly Dally Bedtime Routine was published in In addition to her creative work, she also writes educational activities, workbooks and curriculum based texts for children. Lydia s background is multi-disciplinary and spans the fields of literature, theater and puppetry. She has cowritten and co-produced five plays for Panadream Theater, a company she co-founded in These plays for young audiences were told through the eyes of string marionettes. Her award winning play Yorgo & the World was selected to be part of the prestigious 2012 World Puppetry Festival in China. Her plays were presented at many festivals such as the Montreal International Jazz Festival, the International Puppetry Festival in Russia, the Toronto International Circus Festival and the Just for Laughs Festival among many others. As a puppeteer, she toured extensively spreading joy to children from all walks of life. These precious experiences have enabled her to understand what engages children. Artist quote I always encourage children to continue reading and writing, because it expands their horizons and helps develop their creativity. For me the magic is in the written word and in the limitless world of imagination. I would like to ignite these passions in children and help keep literacy alive. Please contact the artist for rates and information. Lydia Lukidis info@lydialukidis.com
