1 Course Title: Short Story Board Approval Date: 07/21/14 Credit / Hours:.5 credit Course Description: This course focuses on mastery of the PA Core Standards for English Language Arts. Short Story is a course designed for students to study quality literature of various genres and authors. By studying a variety of texts, the students will strengthen their ability to analyze and comprehend what they read and improve their writing and speaking skills. Students will also improve their vocabulary skills and increase their understanding of universal themes. 3 Topic: 1- literary elements Short Story Structureplot, conflict, pacing, exposition, action, climax, resolution, dénouement Author's tone, style and diction to create realism Types of characters and characterization, static character, dynamic character, flat character, round character, motivation, protagonist, antagonist, foil Students will understand how authors combine literary elements to create a fluid story. CC D - Determine an author's particular point of view and analyze how rhetoric advances the point of view. CC E - Analyze how an author's choices concerning how to structure a text, order events within it and manipulate time create an effect. CC H - Analyze how an author draws on and transforms themes, topics, character types, and/ or other text elements from source material in a specific work. CC J - Acquire and use accurately general academic and domain specific words and phrases, sufficient for reading, writing, speaking, and listening at the college and career readiness level; demonstrate independence in gathering vocabulary knowledge when considering a word or phrase important to comprehension or expression.

CC A - Determine a theme or central idea of a text and analyze in detail its development over the course of the text, including how it emerges and is shaped and refined by specific details; provide an objective summary of the text. CC B - Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences and conclusions based on an author's explicit assumptions and beliefs about a subject. CC C - Analyze how complex characters develop over the course of a text, interact with other characters, and advance the plot or develop the theme. CC D - Determine an author's particular point of view and analyze how rhetoric advances the point of view. CC H - Analyze how an author draws on and transforms themes, topics, character types, and/ or other text elements from source material in a specific work.

CC L - Demonstrate a grade appropriate command of the conventions of standard English grammar, usage, capitalization, punctuation and spelling.,
