1 The Getting-ready Game About the game The purpose of the Getting-ready Game is to develop the narrative skills that children need to listen, to build a core vocabulary and to hear descriptive language used with the vocabulary. It will help to familiarise the children with the vocabulary that will be used in a session and with associated descriptive words. How to play Use the beginning of the session to familiarise the children with key elements in the LEGO Education StoryTales set (people, cat, dog, goats, horse, crocodile, fish, bread, treasure chest, boat, spade and spider). Use a grey LEGO DUPLO building plate (or the box itself) as a screen. Make the elements appear, slowly and one at a time, from behind the screen. See if any of the children can guess what each one is before it fully appears. Put no pressure on the children to name the items for the first few sessions but encourage more naming as the children begin to remember what is in the StoryTales set in subsequent sessions. For more able children or for subsequent sessions, give the children a simple description rather than showing parts of the items. Can they remember the words from the description? As each element is revealed, allow the children to put it onto a building plate and then put it to the side until needed. Time invested at this level will help children move on more quickly through the session plans. LB PCM 1

2 The Putting-away Game About the game This is a way of utilising all available time to support the language skills necessary for literacy development. This activity will support children s listening, attention and verbal comprehension skills. How to play At the end of every session, give children instructions to find the LEGO DUPLO bricks and special elements and put them away. For children with very low-level language, only ask for one item. For more able children, ask for two or three items and see if they can remember them. Aim to build up to connected instructions, e.g. Put away the big red brick, then the crocodile. Once they have found a requested item, put it into the LEGO Education StoryTales set. Hide a reward sticker in the treasure chest element for the children to open and take at the end of every session. Ensure that the StoryTales set is kept separately from other classroom equipment so that it retains a special aspect. LB PCM 2

3 Vocabulary checking sheet How to use this sheet For each word, date the Understands column when the child understands the word when you say it and date the Says column when they say the word. Once the child has demonstrated understanding or use of the vocabulary in a couple of sessions, you do not need to continue monitoring it. The words have been grouped to match each of the LEGO Education StoryTales background cards. Use the blank boxes to write in any other words used within the session that demonstrate new vocabulary development. 12 The Three Billy Goats Gruff Vocabulary Story goat under bridge first trip-trapping smallest middle-sized biggest stream troll grass Once upon a time, there were three billy goats gruff. They lived in a dark, spooky cave and had no nice food to eat. Over the bridge, there was lots of long, green grass. The three billy goats gruff wanted to go over the bridge to eat the lovely grass. But a horrible troll lived under the bridge and he said that he would eat the goats if they tried to cross. One day, the goats were so hungry that they decided to try and cross the bridge. The smallest goat went first. As the goat walked over the bridge, the troll roared: Who s that trip-trapping over my bridge? I am going to eat you! The smallest goat replied: It is only me, the smallest goat. I am too small to eat. If you wait, you can eat my brother he is much bigger and tastier than me. The troll was very greedy and decided to wait for the bigger goat. He let the smallest goat cross the bridge to the other side. Next, the middle-sized goat came along the bridge. As the goat walked, the troll roared: Who s that trip-trapping over my bridge? I am going to eat you! The middle-sized goat replied: It is only me, middle-sized goat. I am not very big. If you wait, my brother will come along he is much bigger and tastier than me. The greedy troll decided to wait for the biggest goat. He let the middle-sized goat go over the bridge. Finally, the biggest goat came along the bridge. As the goat walked, the troll roared: Who s that trip-trapping over my bridge? I am going to eat you! The biggest goat said: Oh no, you are not! He charged at the troll and knocked him over the bridge and into the water. All three goats went over the bridge to the lovely, long grass and they lived happily ever after. LB PCM 9

13 Jack and the Beanstalk Vocabulary boy (Jack) mother / mummy market sell horse magic beans angry threw window castle giant treasure chest Fee fi fo fum! asleep awake chased axe chopped beanstalk Story Once upon a time, there was a boy named Jack. He lived on a farm with his mother. They were very poor because a giant had stolen all their coins. They only had a horse and had no food to eat. One day, Mother said: Jack, you must take the horse to the market. Sell him so that we can buy some food. Jack took the horse to the market. When he got there, he met a man. The man said: I would like to buy your horse. I will give you three magic beans. Jack was excited about the beans so he sold the horse to the man. When Jack got home, his mother was angry. She wanted some food but Jack only had three magic beans. Jack s mother threw the beans out of the window. The next morning, there was a huge beanstalk where the beans had been thrown. It went right up into the sky. Jack decided to climb up the beanstalk. When Jack got to the top, he saw a castle. In the castle was the treasure chest full of coins that the giant had stolen from Jack and his mother. Jack was about to take the treasure chest when he heard the giant roar: Fee fi fo fum! I smell the blood of an Englishman! The giant saw Jack and chased him. Jack grabbed the treasure chest and ran down the beanstalk. When he got to the bottom, Jack chopped the beanstalk down with an axe. The beanstalk fell to the ground and the giant was trapped up in his castle in the clouds. Now, Jack and his mother had plenty of coins to buy food and they lived happily ever after. LB PCM 10
