5 History of From the moment it made its debut in December 1941, The New England Hall has been a favorite of home office associates and the community at large. Paneled with redwood burl and bleached mahogany, with its street floor lobby entrance constructed of gleaming marble and travertine, The New England Hall has been catching the eye of its beholders from the day it opened. For home office associates back in 1941, it was love at first sight. By January of 1942, this memo was circulating around the home office: Because of the more than adequate facilities offered by our New England Mutual Hall (its original name), a definite interest has been shown throughout the Company in the formation of an employees Dramatics Club. Home office thespians quickly formed a group called New England Mutual Players, which opened on March 19, 1942 with three plays, the first being Thornton Wilder s The Happy Journey. As it turned out, the title was a precursor of the eventful trip through time The New England Hall has been enjoying over the past 57 years. During World War II, the TNE Hall housed USO shows for the U.S. armed forces (one of The New England s many contributions to the war effort), and for 14 years, from the mid-1940 s to 1959, the hall was the home of the Boston Summer Theater. Theatrical celebrities of the time appearing on The New England Hall stage include Tony Bennett, Beatrice Lillie, Lucille Ball, Edward Everett Horton, Charles Coburn and James Mason. The Boston s Children Theatre used the hall as its home theater from the mid-1960 s until the company closed the facility to outside uses in 1995 as part of its first floor reconversion plan. In 1973, the hall (at that time called New England Life Hall) underwent major renovations. Originally designed for multiple company and community functions ranging from recreation to public assembly and performances, the hall was built with a flat floor and removable seats that accommodated 930 people. The extensive renovations included construction of a sloping floor and permanent seating for 685 with every seat providing comfort and an unobstructed line of vision. Throughout its long history, The New England Hall has served the company and the community by providing an excellent setting for a broad variety of events from concerts, business meetings and graduation ceremonies to World War II fundraisers and theatrical productions. Now, with its most recent renovations of lighting and sound equipment, refinished stage, new carpeting and reupholstered seats completed and Tillinger s Concierge & Special Event Productions at the helm as operator, the newly named Copley Theatre has reopened for a future of exciting moments for all to cherish.

6 THE COPLEY THEATRE 225 CLARENDON STREET, BOSTON DRIVING DIRECTIONS TO THE COPLEY THEATRE From the West via Interstate 90, The Massachusetts Turnpike East: Follow Interstate 90E to Exit 22, Copley Square, Prudential Center. Follow signs to Copley Square. After the exit, go to the first set of lights and turn left onto Dartmouth Street. Follow Dartmouth Street to the 4 th set of lights at Commonwealth Avenue and turn right. At the first set of lights turn right onto Clarendon Street. is on the left immediately after you go through the first set of lights From the South Via Interstate 95 and Interstate 93N or Route 3N: Follow Interstate 95N or Route 3N to Interstate 93N into the city and take Exit 17, E. Berkeley Street. Stay in the left lane and at the first set of lights turn left onto E. Berkeley Street. Follow E. Berkley Street through 5 sets of lights. Immediately after 5 th set of lights the road bears right (police station on left), continue over bridge. Follow Berkeley Street to the 5 th set of lights. At Newbury Street take a left. Follow Newbury Street to 1 st set of lights. At Clarendon Street take a left. is immediately on your left. From the North via Interstate 93S or Route 1S to 93S: Follow Route 1 South to Interstate 93S or Take Interstate 93S to Exit 26, Storrow Drive, Cambridge. Follow the signs for Storrow Drive. Take the second exit on the left, Copley Square, Back Bay. At the first set of lights, turn right onto Beacon Street. At the second set of lights take a left onto Clarendon Street. After the fourth set of lights the Theatre is immediately on your left. PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION TO THE COPLEY THEATRE From the North Shore Commuter Rail from North Station Transfer to the Green Line. Take the Green Line inbound to Copley Station. Exit onto Dartmouth Street, turn left onto Boylston Street, walk one block to Clarendon Street, turn left. The theatre entrance is located at 225 Clarendon Street. The Blue Line Take the Blue Line to Government Center. Change to the Green Line inbound (any train). Take the Green line to Copley Station. Exit onto Dartmouth Street, turn left onto Boylston Street, walk one block to Clarendon Street, turn left. The theatre entrance is located at 225 Clarendon Street. The Orange Line From either direction, Oak Grove or Forest Hills head inbound to Back Bay/Dartmouth Street Station. Follow the signs to the Clarendon Street Exit. Turn left onto Clarendon Street, follow for three blocks, the theatre is located at 225 Clarendon Street (the corner or Boylston and Clarendon Streets). From the South Shore Take the Commuter Rail to South Station. Transfer to the Red Line inbound to Park Street. From Park Street transfer to the Green Line outbound (any train) to Copley Station follow the signs to the Dartmouth Street exit. Take left onto Boylston Street follow one block to Clarendon Street. Turn left onto Clarendon Street. The theatre is located at 225 Clarendon Street. The Red Line Take the Red Line from either Alewife or Braintree Stations inbound to Park Street Station. Transfer to the Green Line outbound (any train). Exit onto Dartmouth Street, turn left onto Boylston Street follow one block, turn left onto Clarendon Street. The theatre is located at 225 Clarendon Street. From the West The Green Line Take the Green Line inbound to Copley Station. Follow the signs to the Boston Public Library exit. Turn right onto Boylston Street. Follow one block to Clarendon Street, turn left. The theatre is located at 225 Clarendon Street. There are buses available that will bring you to the front of the Boston Public Library. They are #7 and #9 from South Boston and the #55 from Roxbury. After exiting the bus, make a left down Boylston Street one block to Clarendon Street. Turn left onto Clarendon Street. The theatre is located at 225 Clarendon Street. There is #39 bus from Forest Hills that stops behind the Trinity Church. After exiting the bus, simply walk across Copley Square to Boylston Street, turn left onto Boylston Street and then an immediate left onto Clarendon Street at the lights.
