1 Sustainable Sourcing Policy Sugar Cane

2 Introduction About 80% of the sugar consumed worldwide comes from sugar cane which is grown by plantations and about 60 million small farmers. Brazil, China, India, Thailand, Australia, Pakistan and Mexico are the main producing countries and account for almost 75% of global sugar cane supply. Barry Callebaut uses both sugar derived from cane and beet and wherever possible sources this regionally or even locally. While demand for sugar cane keeps growing mainly based on demand for sugar cane-derivative products like biofuels and bioplastics - sugar cane production faces a number of serious social and environmental sustainability risks. These include forced and child labour, hazardous labour conditions, conflict over land rights, and loss of biodiversity. This policy is an integral part of our Sustainable Sourcing Policy for Ingredients and must be read in conjunction with it. Policy Framework This policy lays out principles that we ask our suppliers to follow in order to mitigate sustainability risks and to contribute to a more sustainable sugar cane sector. Sustainability risks in sugar cane may vary depending on the circumstances of sugar cane production and local conditions. While we take this into account, we require all our suppliers to works towards a more sustainable sugar cane sector.

3 Sustainable sugar cane principles We ask suppliers to adhere to the following key principles: Barry Callebaut strongly condemns forced labor, slavery, human trafficking, and all practices that exploit children or expose them to harmful or hazardous conditions. Suppliers must realize the principles of ILO Convention No. 138, on the minimum age for admission to employment and work, and ILO Convention No. 182, on the worst forms of child labor; Ensure healthy and safe labour conditions; Protect biodiversity and preserve natural resources through appropriate land use planning; Prevent soil erosion and apply soil management practices maintaining the structure and fertility of the soil. Protect land rights, no displacement of the population for sugar cane cultivation; establish a free, prior, and informed consultation process with affected stakeholders before developing new plantations or operations. Avoid negative environmental impacts, minimize effluents and waste from sugar cane fields and from mills; protect groundand surface water and ecological areas from pollution; reduce air pollution from field burning. Carry out a social and environmental impact assessment (SEIA) prior to developing new plantations and operations, and minimize negative impacts.

4 Commitment While we acknowledge that implementing sustainable practices can be challenging, we expect all suppliers to work towards the stated principles and to show significant progress. In case Barry Callebaut becomes aware of a supplier violating the stated principles, we will request the immediate implementation of corrective measures. We buy preferably from and will develop business with suppliers that help us work towards the principles stated above and show tangible progress in improving the sustainability of the sugar we use. Reporting We will provide regular updates of activities on our website ( and our annual Barry Callebaut Sustainability Report.
