4 ITINERARY Jesse Helms Center Remembering D Day Day 1 Tuesday 13 th September 2016 Arrive Charles de Gaulle Airport Meet coach and tour leader for transfer to Bayeux Lunch in Caen Visit to the Memorial de Caen Continue on to the hotel in Bayeux Check in to the hotel and orientation walk of Bayeux Dinner at a local restaurant Day 2 Wednesday 14 th September 2016 Visit to the Battle of Normandy Museum Lunch in Arromanches or picnic lunch Afternoon visit to Arromanches to see the remains of the temporary Mulberry Harbour Visit to the Arromanches Landing Museum It was on the beach of Arromanches that, during the Invasion of Normandy immediately after D Day, the Allies established an artificial temporary harbour to allow the unloading of heavy equipment without waiting for the conquest of deep water ports such as Le Havre or Cherbourg. Meet coach for return transfer to the hotel Day 3 Thursday 15 th September 2016 Meet coach for a day excursion to the other landing beaches Start the tour on Utah Beach Stop at Sainte Mere Eglise (they still have a model paratrooper hanging from the church) A well known incident involved the American paratrooper John Steele of the 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment (PIR), whose parachute caught on the spire of the town church, and could only observe the fighting going on below. He hung there limply for two hours, pretending to be dead, before the Germans took him prisoner. Steele later escaped from the Germans and rejoined his division when US troops of the 3rd Battalion, 505 Parachute Infantry Regiment attacked the village. 5

5 Meet coach for transfer to Pointe du Hoc During World War II Pointe du Hoc was the highest point between Utah Beach to the west and Omaha Beach to the east. The German army fortified the area with concrete casements and gun pits. On D Day (6 June 1944) the United States Army Ranger Assault Group assaulted and captured Pointe du Hoc after scaling the cliffs.
