Boot camping a Mac to run Windows Mac computers can be used for any program at Fanshawe College but some programs run software that requires a Windows environment. For some programs, such as Secure Exam (a locked-down environment in which you write exams), running a virtual machine such as VMware Fusion or Parallels will not work as the program will not run with a virtual machine present on the system. It is our recommendation instead to boot camp the Mac, allowing the computer to start in either Mac or Windows at the user s choice. Fanshawe College Technology Services HelpDesk will assist any student that is part of an eligible program with the boot camping of their Mac. This process can be quite time consuming and can take upwards of over 4 hours so we have made this guide in order to assist students in boot camping their Mac themselves, or at least have enough of the process started so we can finish it for them. Required steps before you can boot camp Mac - An Intel-based Mac with a built-in or external USB keyboard, and a built-in track pad or USB mouse. - Mac OS X v10.5 or later. It may be very difficult to find Windows drivers for anything older than Mac v10.7 as Mac tends to archive these files. We highly recommend updating your Mac OSX to 10.7 or 10.8, Lion or Mountain Lion - The latest firmware updates available for your Mac. - Boot Camp Assistant, which is located in /Applications/Utilities/. You can also open Launchpad and type Boot Camp Assistant in the search field. - Supported Windows installation media. Boot Camp does not include Windows. (See Windows for more information on the Windows installation media) - An USB drive for the Windows drivers and Windows operating system (min. 8bg free space). NOTE: this will erase the USB drive in the process and all files will be lost. Be sure to use a blank stick or have a copy of the files somewhere else. - Minimum of 30gb free disk space on the Mac Windows - A copy of Windows downloaded from This download is free for all students of Fanshawe College and instructions on how to sign up are available at the FSU website as well. 2 P a g e
- A valid Windows license key, which is given to you when you receive your Windows download. Please note that the after you download Windows, the Windows key will be available on the site for 30 days. Please make sure you copy that key on a document file or write it down and keep it somewhere safe. The website charges a small fee to retrieve lost license keys after the 30 days. - Windows 7 Ultimate or Professional 64-bit is HIGHLY recommended. This is because most modern Macbooks require the 64-bit version of Windows to run at full power, and some versions will not work at all without Windows 64-bit. Windows 8 is also available on the FSU website but we highly recommend against it because at the time of writing this document there is only one version of Mac OSX that is capable of running it. Download Software from Fanshawe On The Hub The information below on how to download software from Fanshawe on the hub has been taken from the help content of the Fanshawe on the Hub website at How do I download software with the Secure Download Manager (SDM)? To download and install the SDM: 1. Sign in to the WebStore using your Username and Password. 2. Place the order for your software. When the order is completed, the Receipt page is displayed. This is also where your license key is listed in red lettering! 3. On the Receipt page, click the Start Download button. The Get your Software in 4 Easy Steps window is displayed. 4. Click the Download SDM button (Step 1). The SDM starts downloading. 5. Follow the steps for your browser to download the SDM on your computer. Depending on your browser, the steps will be slightly different (Step 2). 6. Locate the downloaded file and launch the SDM. 7. Click the Download.SDX button for your order (Step 3). Depending on your browser, the SDM window may open when the.sdx has completed downloading or you may have to locate the.sdx file before you can download your software (Step 4). 8. Click the Start Download button for each item to download your software. Where can I find a link to download or re-download the software that I ordered? To find a link to download your software: 1. Sign in to the WebStore from where you ordered the software using your Username and Password. 3 P a g e
2. At the top of the page, click the Your Account/Orders link. 3. In the Order History section, select the software that you ordered and click the View Details link. The product information including serial number is displayed. 4. On the Receipt page in the Items section, click the Start Download button. o If you have previously downloaded and installed the SDM, the Secure Download Manager window will display your most recently ordered software. Go to step 6. o If this is the first time you have downloaded the SDM, the Secure Download Manager Installation window is displayed. 5. Click the Download SDM button. The SDM starts downloading. o For specific installation instructions for Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome and Apple Safari, click the appropriate tab in the Secure Download Manager Installation window. o Once you have downloaded and installed the SDM, your most recently ordered software is displayed in the Secure Download Manager window. 6. To begin downloading your software, click the Start button. Note There may be more than one file that needs to be downloaded for your software. Burning Windows to disk If you do not have a USB drive to put the Windows installation files and support drivers on you can also burn them to disk. Burning the Windows files to disk requires specific steps or else the disk will not work. Burning the support drivers can be done normally and works fine. Please note that Super drives are not recommended as they are not always detected by Windows on reboot. To burn a Windows Installation disk: 1. You must have a normal blank DVD; dual-layer is not necessary. Also your Windows installation file must be in.iso format, as per Step 1 in Part A. 2. Open up Disk Utility. You can find Disk Utility in the same place as Boot camp assistant, under the Go -> Utilities menu. 3. Click and drag the Windows installation files to the menu on the left, just below the blank disk and then click Burn at the top. An example is shown below. 4 P a g e
Additional Assistance: If you need more assistance or are having problems with any steps please come and see us at the Technical Support Services HelpDesk, Room E2030. We ask that you please have completed Part A, or at least have downloaded the Windows installation files from as these steps can take hours to complete and there is nothing that can be done until they have finished downloading. To Boot camp: Part A: Make a bootable Windows USB drive and support drivers To make a bootable USB drive, please first be sure that you have completed the steps provided above in Required steps. You should have a minimum of 8 GB free on the USB drive ready. 1) Find the Windows installation file you downloaded from the website and rename it from an.img to an.iso. This is a required step to make the USB drive work. To rename it, simply double-tap on the file to bring up the advanced menu and choose Get Info. Then under the Name and Extension menu go to the end of the name and change the img to iso. 5 P a g e
2) Open the Boot Camp Assistant program on your Mac. You can find this under Go -> Utilities or by typing Boot Camp into your finder bar. 6 P a g e
3) Boot camp assistant will open and give a splash screen as seen below: Click continue. 4) If you have a large enough USB drive (min. 8 GB) make sure both Create a Windows 7 install disk and Download the latest Windows support software are selected. This will help you save time by putting both the drivers and the windows install files on the same USB drive. This process can take quite some time and requires you to be 7 P a g e
connected to the internet in order to download the latest drivers. Please be sure your power cable is plugged in during this process. 5) Once this process is complete you will have a bootable USB drive with Windows and support drivers on it. Keep this handy for Part B: Installing. 8 P a g e
Part B: Installing the Windows Operating System 1) Reopen Boot Camp assistant and this time make sure everything is unchecked except for Install Windows 7 and have the USB drive from Part A attached. 2) The slide bar on the next screen lets you decide how much space to put aside for the Windows portion of your notebook. It is important to make the right decision for this as it is not changeable after the fact without redoing the entire Windows partition and losing everything on the Windows side. It is highly recommended to use more than the 20 GB recommended by Mac unless you do not have the space to spare on the Mac side. If you know you are going to be saving a lot of information or doing a lot of school work on the Windows side we would recommend at least GB allocated to it (as you can see in the screenshot below, 40 GB has been set aside for the Windows side). However, if you are taking Business Marketing or need to install CS5, CS6 or Dreamweaver for one of your courses please make sure you have allocated 100GB for Windows. If you come across any disk related errors during this process please see Section C: Additional Information (Disk Errors during partitioning.) 9 P a g e
3) Once you click Install your computer may restart by itself a few times during the process, and this may take some time. Again it is highly recommended to have your power cable plugged in during this process. 4) Once complete you will have to answer some simple questions to set up the Windows side, for example: computer name, password, date/time/time zone etc. If you put the Windows support drives on the same USB they will automatically install as well at this time. If not simply go to these drivers and install them. Some functions such as doubletapping, the keyboard shortcuts like eject, volume, wireless internet etc. may not work until the drivers are installed. Also the screen resolution will be very low until they are installed as well. Part C: Additional Information Disk Errors during partitioning: you may sometimes receive errors during Part B: Step 2. This is usually because there are errors on your hard drive. These errors could have been present for years without you knowing this. It is only because of the act of partitioning that your Mac realizes there is a problem. This is especially common in older systems or machines that have been running for a very long time without a reinstall or upgrade of the OSX. There are 4 things that can correct this issue, listed here in increasing impact to your data: 10 P a g e
1. Run a disk check: this can be done easily and usually only takes a few minutes per check. Simply go into the Go -> Utilities -> Disk Utility menu, or search for Disk Utility in the finder. If you click on your hard drive on the left hand side, then the First Aid tab you will see options to Verify Disk and Fix Disk. You must of course verify before you can fix any problems. You may also have to Verify and Fix Permissions as well. This process does not affect your personal data. 2. Run a disk check from the original OSX disk: if the disk check fails you may have to run one from the OSX disk that originally came with your computer, or the recovery partition if your Mac has one. If you do not have this disk or a recovery partition you may need to contact Apple Support to get one. Follow the instructions in the following link to run a disk check from the OSX disk As long as you only run the disk check this process does not affect your personal data. 3. Reimage your Mac: worst case scenario, if the disk check cannot correct the issue you may have to try reimaging your Mac. Note: this erases all information on the notebook, be sure to have backed everything up before attempting! Steps on how to erase and install can be found here and depending on the age of your notebook you may need internet connection or the original OSX disk in order to reinstall the OSX. 4. Hard drive: if all else fails your hard drive may be defective and you should contact Apple Support or go to an Apple Store so they can test the drive. Newer Mac systems (v or earlier) have onboard diagnostics that may help in this matter and instructions on how to run a hard drive test can be found here Some older OSX s come with a diagnostic disk that can be used in much the same way. Using Boot camp: To choose which computer, Windows or Mac, that you start into simply hold down the Option key as soon as you turn the computer on. You will then be able to choose which partition to boot into. Turning on the computer: The default option when you turn on the computer is to boot into the Mac side. Restarting: If you are in the Windows side and you choose to restart, it will automatically boot into the Windows side again without having to press and hold Option at start up. Transferring files between Windows and Mac: once all the support drivers are installed you can move files back and forth between Windows and Mac by clicking and dragging the file into the Mac partition in the Computer menu on the Windows side. You can find the Computer menu by going into the Start Menu and looking on the right-hand side for it. Burning Windows to disk: If you do not have a USB drive to put the Windows installation files and support drivers on you can also burn them to disk. Burning the Windows files to disk requires specific steps or else the disk will not work. Burning the support drivers can be done normally and work fine. 11 P a g e
Updates: It is very important to update your Windows side as soon as possible, but these updates may take a while. Activating Windows: Once you have installed the software you need for courses and update windows you will need to activate you windows. Note: Not activating Windows within 30 days will cause windows to disable itself. To activate windows please follow the steps below 1. Right-click Computer icon and select Properties. 2. Scroll to the bottom of page and click Activate Windows Now. 12 P a g e
3. Click Activate Windows Online Now. 13 P a g e
4. You will now need to enter your Windows 7 product key, you can get genuine Windows 7 Activation keys provided from fanshawe.onthehub.com, copy any key and enter it as shown below, click Next to continue. 5. You must be connected to internet for activation to work, let the process finish. 14 P a g e
6. If you have screen like the screen below, you fully activated your Windows side. 15 P a g e
