2 WHAT WAS THE EFFECT OF THE BOSTON MASSACRE ON THE 13 COLONIES AND THE EVENTUAL OUTBREAK OF REVOLUTION?
3 THESIS The Boston Massacre was the catalyst that sparked the physical conflict between the colonies and Britain. First mass publicized physical conflict Revolutionary propaganda encouraged colonial dissent Trial unified colonists
4 WHAT HAPPENED? Who was injured? 5 male Colonists were killed, 6 other colonists were injured How did it begin? A group of young male colonists harassed a group of British soldiers One soldier struck one of the colonists with the butt of his rifle Several colonists began to gather and threw snowballs and stones at the British soldiers The British soldiers fired in retaliation 2
5 ACCOUNTS FROM EYEWITNESSES They immediately surrounded the sentry posted there, and with clubs and other weapons threatened to execute their vengeance on him. I was soon informed by a townsman their intention was to carry off the soldier from his post and probably murder him. On which I desired him to return for further intelligence, and he soon came back and assured me he heard the mobb declare they would murder him. - Cpt. Thomas Preston The numerous instances of bad behavior in the soldiery, made us early sensible that the troops were not sent here for any benefit to the town or province, and that we had no good to expect from such conservators of the peace.it was not expected, however, that such an outrage and massacre, as happened here on the evening of the fifth instant, would have been perpetrated. There were then killed and wounded, by a discharge of musketry, eleven of his Majesty's subjects, viz.the actors in this dreadful tragedy were a party of soldiers commanded by Capt. Preston of the 29th regiment. This party, including the Captain, consisted of eight, who are all committed to jail. -Anonymous account
6 FIRST MASS PUBLICIZED CONFLICT First violent encounter directly between the colonists and the redcoats With lives now lost, Americans would be increasingly wary of British government actions that might result in political tyranny (Martin 116) British soldiers Revolutionaries magnified the violence of the riot to gain colonist support 3
7 REVOLUTIONARY PROPAGANDA The Bloody Massacre on Kings Street Depicts the British forces as menacing The officer is shown giving the order There is a soldier shooting from a window Colonists appear to be cowering in fear and not fighting back This would persuade many that the British were evil and colonists were innocent Made colonists question the King and Parliament 4
8 THE TRIALS AFTER THE BOSTON MASSACRE After the massacre colonists wanted justice against the redcoats who killed the five men in the confrontation. Emotions were those of resentment and wary toward Great Britain prompting those to want revenge against the British. John Adams and Josiah Quincy decided on defending the British redcoat. Only two of the redcoats prosecuted were found guilty Those found guilty had their thumbs seared with a hot branding iron. The people of Boston saw the justice served as reassurance that the colonist could overpower their parent nation. 5
9 SCHOOLS OF HISTORY Imperial: British policies weren't necessarily harsh or unfair Taxes and their enforcement caused tension between colonies and the crown Ideological: Colonists reacted out of fear of tyranny No ulterior motives were in play for colonists
