Section 1 Introduction The DVI IO Option is most commonly installed at the factory as it can be difficult and could result in damage to the unit. This manual is intended for use by our Dealers. We do not recommend that End Users attempt this installation unless they have been specifically guided to do so by our Support Team. The Dual DVI IO card has 2: DMS 59 connectors mounted on its faceplate, referred to as the upper and lower channels in this document. (See Figure 1) Each channel has 1 Input path and 1 Output path, which is accessed by using a DMS 59 Cable Adaptor. (See Figure 2) Figure 1 Dual DVI IO DMS 59 faceplate Figure 2 DMS 59 Cable Adaptor: Connector 1 = DVI Output Connector 2 = DVI Input The DMS 59 Cable Adaptor has two labeled connectors - connector 1 is the OUTPUT of the channel and connector 2 is the INPUT to the channel. Each channel of the DVI IO card (Each DMS 59 connector) is using the circuitry on the HD IO card in the Broadcast Pix Workstation. Each channel input is sharing the same circuitry as the last input of the HD IO Card. If you have only one HD IO card, you will be using either input 4 or input 8 depending on where your HD IO card is positioned in the workstation (inputs 1-4 or 5-8). If you are using both channels on your DVI IO card, then you will be using BOTH inputs 4 and 8. The same rules apply for the outputs. If you have only one HD IO card, you will be using either output D or output E depending on where your HD IO card is positioned in the workstation. If you are using both channels on your DVI IO card, then you will be using BOTH outputs D and E. However keep in mind this is all selectable through the Slate IO Assignments window. You can use two DVI or VGA inputs and will not be able to use inputs 4 or 8, and later choose to have HD sources on 4 and 8 and not use any DVI or VGA sources. Again, the same rules apply for the outputs. It is fully selectable through the Slate IO Assignments window. Broadcast Pix DVI IO Field Install Guide Page 1

Section 4 Removing Components 4.1 Removing Top Cover After shutting down and unplugging unit, begin by unscrewing the thumb screw on the front of the Broadcast Pix (see Figure 6) and sliding the cover back and off. (See Figure 7) Figure 6 Cover Thumbscrew Figure 7 Remove Cover 4.2 Remove Audio Cable and Hold Down Bar Using a pair of wire cutters, cut the tie wraps holding the Audio Cable to the Hold Down Bar and to the Audio Daughter Card. Then, with a slotted screwdriver (if necessary), remove the large thumbscrew on one end of the Hold Down Bar. Then remove the Hold Down bar by lifting the end that had the thumbscrew until it is almost vertical and it will release itself from the hinge on the other end. After that, remove the audio connection from the Audio Daughter Card and hang it outside the rear of the workstation. Figure 8 Hold Down Bar and Audio Cable removed Broadcast Pix DVI IO Field Install Guide Page 4

Section 4 Removing Components 4.3 Remove Extra Hard Drive The next step involves removing the extra hard drive that is in the center of the unit against the front. Not all units have this. In a Premium Workstation, this drive is the Backup Drive and is shipped disconnected. DO NOT plug it in if it is disconnected. You will connect this drive if you ever need to restore your system. If you have a Standard Workstation, this drive is for Clip Channel 2 and WILL be connected. It is not necessary to disconnect it for this step. If this drive is not there (Refer to Figure 3 for its location), then skip this step and go to section 4.4 below. Begin by removing the two screws on the front panel of your workstation. These are found to the left of your power switch and above the intake filter. (See Figure 9) Now remove the two screws from the top of the Hard Drive plate. (See Figure 10) Figure 9 Hard Drive Front Screws Now gently move the hard drive assembly out of the way onto the top of the other hard drive enclosure. Keep it attached to its mounting plate. (See Figure 11) Figure 10 Hard Drive Top Screws Figure 11 Hard Drive removed Broadcast Pix DVI IO Field Install Guide Page 5

Section 4 Removing Components 4.4 About the IO Card(s) Throughout the rest of this document, when speaking of the IO Cards, you may have one or two IO cards. They will be in the Primary and Secondary Card Slots. (Refer to Figure 3) Because the DVI IO Card gets its circuitry from the HD IO Cards, you will only be concerned with your HD IO Cards for this process. If you have, or will have, TWO HD IO Cards at the end of this process, then you will need to remove both the Primary and Secondary Cards from your machine, no matter what type (Analog, Digital SDI or HD/SD SDI) they are. If you have, or will have, only ONE HD IO Card at the end of this process, then you will only need to remove the HD IO Card, or the card that you are replacing with the HD IO Card. Because every upgrade will have a different configuration, you may have to use your judgment while following the rest of this guide. Just remember that whichever card ends up in the Primary Card Slot, MUST have the Audio Daughter Card on it! The system will not care if you move your cards around to make your HD IO card the Primary card so you can have your inputs 1-4 as HD/SD SDI if you are only using one HD IO card, as long as you move the Audio Daughter Card with it. The only exception to this statement is the 2100 series with an ibob. In that case of a 2100 system with a DVI IO Card, the HD IO Card must be in the Secondary Card Slot and you MUST leave the Digital SDI card in the Primary Card Slot. Also with a 2100 system, you can ONLY have one channel of DVI (or VGA) because to run your ibob you need one Digital SDI card in your system and it NEEDS to be in the Primary Card Slot. 4.5 Removing the OTT Card To begin, we will need to remove the Over The Top Card (the OTT Card). This card requires a bit of force to get it out, just be cautious not to snap off a corner when removing it. It is a very tight fit, especially with 3 Cards in the system. To remove it, simply place your fingers under either end of the card right to left (orientated to Figure 12) and lift one end, then the other, until it pulls free of the Slate Main Card and the one or two IO Cards. Lift from sides Figure 12 The OTT Card Broadcast Pix DVI IO Field Install Guide Page 6

Section 4 Removing Components 4.6 Removing the IO Cards Next we are going to remove the currently installed IO Cards. In the following pictures, you will see that we used two HD IO Cards, but if you are upgrading to HD IO Cards from another configuration, you will follow the same steps with one exception, noted below. Also, if you are only making changes in the Primary Card Slot, you should remove the Secondary Card to make it easier to work in the machine. Using a Phillips screwdriver, unscrew the Primary and/or the Secondary Card(s) from the rear of the workstation as well as the Card Blank next to the Video Card. (See Figure 13) Then on the Secondary Card, push gently from the outside of the workstation in and up to loosen it from its Slot on the Motherboard. Once it is loose, lift the rear of the card (towards the front of the workstation) and gently remove the card. If you feel any resistance, more the card from side to side from the outside near the bottom of the card (near outputs D and E) until you feel the card move freely again. Stating the obvious, if it feels stuck, do not force it because you could damage the motherboard or the IO card and have to ship the unit back to the factory for repair. Gently move it side to side until it comes free of the obstruction holding it back. Once the IO Card is removed, place it on a clean, static-free workspace and remove the other IO Card (if applicable) following the same steps as above until you have removed both the Primary and Secondary Cards. (See Figure 14) This step is unnecessary unless you are using both channels of DVI IO, or you want your HD IO Card to be inputs 1-4. This step will not be necessary if you are working on a 2100 system. Figure 13 Remove Card Blank for DVI IO Card Now we are ready to work on preparing our HD IO Card(s) to control the DVI IO Card. Figure 14 Workstation with no IO Cards Broadcast Pix DVI IO Field Install Guide Page 7

Section 5 HD IO Preparation 5.1 Attach Nylon Standoffs To begin, take three of the Nylon Standoffs from the packing. Orient the HD IO Card onto a staticfree workspace with the top of the card furthest from you and the connectors to your left (See Figure 15) and push the three Nylon Standoff s into the three holes on the card for them. Note: Be careful not to break any components off the HD IO card while applying pressure on it. Figure 15 HDIO with 3 Nylon Standoffs in preparation for mounting DVI Tee board Broadcast Pix DVI IO Field Install Guide Page 8

Section 5 HD IO Preparation 5.2 Attaching the Tee Cards Holding the Tee Card so the two 80 pin Ribbon Cable ports are facing away from you align the long vertical connections on the HD IO and DVI Tee cards and gently push them together until you feel the three Nylon Standoffs securely connect. Be careful of the lower standoff because the circuit board is very thin at that point. (See Figure 16) Figure 16 HDIO card with DVI Tee card attached. Figure 17 DVI Tee on 2nd HDIO board showing yellow capton tape Repeat steps 5.1 and 5.2 on second HD IO Card if necessary. Note: If only one of your Tee cards has yellow capton tape on it, it should be placed on the card that is in the secondary IO Slot (Inputs 5-8) (See Figure 17) HD IO UPGRADE NOTE: If you are upgrading this system to HD IO Cards from an Analog or Digital SDI system, then you must swap out the SATA Cables at this point or the new HD IO Cards will not fit into the system and you could cause damage to the SATA Communication cables that talk to the Hard drives! To change these cables please see: Appendix A Changing the SATA Cables Broadcast Pix DVI IO Field Install Guide Page 9

Section 6 Install HD IO with Tee Assembly 6.1 Installing the Primary Card back into the BPWS This step (6.1) is unnecessary unless you are using both channels of DVI IO, or you want your HD IO Card to be inputs 1-4. This step will not be necessary if you are working on a 2100 system. The first step in installing the HD IO Cards back into the BPWS is to attach the 80pin Flat Ribbon cables to the DVI Tee card. Begin, if applicable, with the Primary Card. Take the shorter pair of 80pin Flat Ribbon Cables and attach the two cables onto the two 80pin ports on the Tee card. Be careful not to disconnect the Tee Card from the HD IO Card when you attach this cable. If you do, just give it a little squeeze to make sure it s tight before re-inserting it into the workstation. Next, replace the HD IO card with the DVI Tee card assembly into the Primary Card Slot. (See Figure 18) Again double check that you have inserted the IO Card with the Audio Daughter Card Attached, and that it is also tightly connected to the HD IO Card. Move the Flat Ribbon cables up and over the far side of the workstation to get them out of our way for the next step. Figure 18 Primary HD IO Card with two 80pin Flat Ribbon Cables 6.2 Installing the Secondary Card back into the BPWS This step should use the Tee Card with the Yellow Capton Tape if only one of your DVI Tee Cards has tape on it. (See Figure 17) Now, take the longer pair of 80pin Flat Ribbon Cables and attach the two cables onto the two 80pin ports on the Tee card. Be careful not to disconnect the Tee Card from the HD IO Card when you attach this cable. If you do, just give it a little squeeze to make sure it s tight before re-inserting it into the workstation. Figure 19 Secondary HD IO Card with two 80pin Flat Ribbon Cables Next, replace the HD IO card with the DVI Tee card assembly into the Secondary Card Slot and move the Flat Ribbon cables up and over the far side of the workstation. 14 Section 7 Installing the DVI IO Card 7.1 Insert DVI IO Card Now, install the DVI IO Card in the Empty slot next to the Video Card. (See Figure 20) At this point, you should double check that all your Rear Support Fins are in the slots near the front of the workstation, and that all of these cards are tight in their slots and are securely seated. (See Figure 21) Figure 21 Rear Support Fins 7.2 DVI IO 80pin Connector Ports Port C Port D Using the phillips screwdriver, Figure 20 DVI IO Card installed screw the 3 cards that you have installed, into the workstation. There is no need to over tighten them, but they should be snug and secure. Top DMS 59 Connector is for the Primary Card Slot normally, but also for a system with only one HD IO Card in the Secondary Card Slot. Port A Port B Bottom DMS 59 Connector is only for Secondary Card Slot in a two channel DVI system. Figure 22 DVI IO Card 80pin Ports to DMS 59 Connectors If you have two HD IO Cards going into your system, then you will be attaching the 80pin Flat Ribbon Cable from the Primary HD IO Card into Ports A & B, and the cables from the Secondary HD IO Card into Ports C & D. (See Figure 22) Figure 23 DMS 59 hh vs. h comparison If you only have one HD IO Card, you will attach the 80pin Flat Ribbon Cables from the HD IO Card into Ports A & B. Broadcast Pix DVI IO Field Install Guide Page 11

Section 7 Installing the DVI IO Card Follow direction 7.3 or 7.4 depending on your system setup 7.3 Connecting a two channel DVI system to the DVI IO Card Connecting the Secondary HD IO Card Take the bottom 80pin Flat Ribbon Cable from the Secondary Card and plug it into Port D on the DVI IO Card. Figure 24 Secondary HD IO Card connected to bottom DMS 59 Connector Then take the top 80pin Flat Ribbon Cable from the Secondary Card and plug it into Port C on the DVI IO Card. This has enabled the bottom DMS 59 connector on the outside of the workstation to use DVI or VGA in and out. (See Figure 24) Connecting the Primary HD IO Card Take the bottom 80 pin Flat Ribbon Cable from the Primary Card and connect it to Port B on the DVI IO Card. Then take the top 80pin Flat Ribbon Cable from the Primary Card and plug it into Port A on the DVI IO Card. This has enabled the top DMS 59 connector on the outside of the workstation to use DVI or VGA in and out. (See Figure 25) Figure 25 Primary HD IO Card connected to top DMS 59 Connector 7.4 Connecting a single channel DVI system to the DVI IO Card Take the bottom 80pin Flat Ribbon cable from your HD IO Card (wherever it may be) and attach it to the bottom right port on the DVI IO Card. The take the top 80 pin Flat Ribbon Cable from your HD IO Card and plug it into the top right port on the DVI IO Card. (This will be same as Figure 25 with only one set of 80pin Flat Ribbon Cables) Broadcast Pix DVI IO Field Install Guide Page 12

Section 8 Closing the Workstation 8.1 Re-attach the OTT Card Take your OTT Card and line it up with your Slate Main and IO Card(s) and press it back onto them by firmly pressing at the points indicated in Figure 26. Two things to think about while doing this, this card is very tight, especially with two IO Cards and the Slate Main card all in place. Feel free to use lots of pressure, but at the same time if it doesn t go in, then see if you can re-adjust it to make them line up better. Also the solder points on the top of this card are very spiky will poke you in the hands while you re installing it. Figure 26 the OTT Card Re attached Figure 27 Screw the top screws into the bracket Remove Extra Hard Drive) 8.2 Re-attach the Hard Drive Assembly Place the Hard Drive back into place, then using the phillips screwdriver, screw the two top screws partially into the hard drive assembly and onto the bracket. You may notice that there is a space between the top of the hard drive assembly and the bracket it sits on. This is normal and you don t have to worry about it. (See Figure 27) Do not tighten these top screws yet, you may need some play in it for the front screws. Next screw the two front screws onto the hard drive assembly just above the intake filter. (See Figure 9 in step Re-attach Audio Cable To re-attach the Audio Cable we need to first set the cable ties in position. In this manual, we used one set of cable ties, but you may choose to use two. Begin by threading the end of the cable tie(s) into the Audio Daughter Card and 25-pin D-Sub Connector. (See Figure 28) Then attach the Audio Daughter Card onto the 25-pin D-Sub Connector, being careful not to push the Audio Daughter Card off the Primary Card. Then attach another cable tie to the end of the first and close the loop, holding the cable securely in place. (See Figure 29) Figure 28 Inserting Cable Tie onto Audio Daughter Card Broadcast Pix DVI IO Field Install Guide Page 13

Section 8 Closing the Workstation 8.4 Re-attach Hold Down Bar Align the Hold Down Bar at a 45 angle so the end with the hole for the thumbscrew is at the top of the angle; place the other end into the Hinge Assembly near the Cooling Fan. Then slowly lower it until it lies flat on top of the cards. You should feel very little pressure while doing this and if you feel too much, stop and check the black plastic fins to see if they are catching any of the cards. If you push on the screws holding the fins, you can make them lie flatter and the bar should go down then. If not, loosen some of the screws on the plastic fins and try again. Next, attach the thumbscrew to the other end of the bar and make sure the plastic fins are all fingertight (Do not over tighten these) on top of the cards. Finally, cable tie the loop of the Audio Cable onto the Hold Down Bar so it does not fall into the workstation and interrupt the operation of the CPU fan below it. Audio Cable correctly cable tied Hold Down Bar Hinge Assembly Figure 29 Finished Installation with no cover 8.5 Double Check Connections As always whenever you work inside one of our Workstations, make sure you double check all the connections, cables, and cards to make sure they are properly plugged and seated and daughter cards are connected. Check to make sure you are not left with any extra parts that you removed from the system. (Some DVI IO Cards may come with extra parts from the factory, Nylon Standoffs, Cable Ties, that s probably ok) 8.6 Replace Cover and Test Finally, we are ready to replace the cover and power up the unit to see if it is ready for use! Go ahead and slide the cover back on and tighten the thumbscrew at the front of the unit. Then re-attach your cables and run the machine. As long as you are running a software version that is 7.1 or later, the software should recognize automatically that you have installed the new card and will enable it in the Slate IO Assignments window. 19 Appendix B Changing the SATA Cables B.1 SATA Cable explanation These SATA Cables connect the Hard Drives to the Motherboard of the computer. Our Analog and Digital SDI IO Cards have space below them to account for the SATA Cables to gently fold over without putting too much pressure on them. The HD IO Cards, however, are packed with so much circuitry that we had to replace our SATA Cables with cables that had right-angles on one end so they would lie flat enough for the HD IO Card to be installed on top of them without causing trouble! This is why you have to change these cables here. This obviously only applies if you did not already have HD IO Cards in your system from the factory. If you did, then these cables should already be Right-Angle SATA Cables and you don t need to worry about any of the following. B.2 Remove Old SATA Cables First let s look at the current cables. You are guaranteed to have two of them. One of them will go to your System (C:) Drive, and the other will go to your Video (D:) Drive. These are plugged into the motherboard into Port 0 and Port 1 respectively. If you have Option Clip Channel 2 or Option More Clip Storage (usually sold together), then you will have a third cable plugged into port 2. Port 0 Port 1 Port 2 (Only with Extra Clip Storage/Clips 2) Figure 30 Straight SATA Cables and Ports Broadcast Pix DVI IO Field Install Guide Page B1

Appendix B Changing the SATA Cables Now look at the other end of these cables. These are connected into the Hard Drives. Cable 0 goes to the System Drive, Cable 1 goes to one of the D Drives, and cable 2 goes to the other D Drive, if applicable. (These show up in My Computer as a single drive) Check Figure 31 and make sure that your cables are connected to the same drives in the same order. If they are connected differently, then make a note somewhere keeping track of which cable goes into which drive.1 Now that we know where these cables are connected, go ahead and remove them. B.3 Install Right-Angle SATA Cables Now, we want to take our new Right-Angle SATA Cables and connect them to the Drives. Following Figure 31, Connect Port 0 and Port 1 to the System (C:) Drive and the first Video (D:) Drive, labeling them as you go along. Then connect Port 2 into the Second Video (D:) Drive to the right of the general Hard Drive Enclosure. (This is the one you removed earlier, so it may be laying somewhere else loosely) The last step is to make sure the cables are as neat as possible. We normally cable tie them together and lay them between the RAM chips. System (C:) Drive 0 Video (D:) Drive 2 Video (D:) Drive 1 Port 2 Cables Dressed Between RAM Chips Figure 31 Right Angle SATA Cables Connected to the Drives Port 1 Port 0 Now return to Section 6 on Page 10 to continue the installation.
