1 SECTION HVAC FANS PART 1 - GENERAL 1.1 RELATED DOCUMENTS A. Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary Conditions and Division 01 Specification Sections, apply to this Section. 1.2 SUMMARY A. This Section includes the following types of fans: 1. Inline centrifugal cabinet fans. 2. Ceiling fans. 3. Power roof ventilators. 4. Propellar Fans. 5. Inline tubular centrifugal fans. B. Related Sections include the following: 1. Division 23 Section "HVAC Motors" for general motor requirements. 2. Division 23 Section "Vibration and Seismic Controls for HVAC piping and Equipment" for bases and spring supports. 1.3 ACTION SUBMITTALS A. Product data including specialties, accessories, and the following: 1. Certified full range fan performance curves with system operating conditions indicated. 2. Certified fan sound power ratings. 3. Motor ratings and electrical characteristics plus motor and fan accessories. 4. Materials thicknesses and finishes. 5. Dampers, including housings, linkages, and operators. B. Shop drawings from manufacturer detailing equipment assemblies and indicating dimensions, weights, required clearances, components, and location and size of field connections. 1.4 INFORMATIONAL SUBMITTALS A. Coordination drawings for roof penetration requirements drawn accurately to scale. Show the following: / 1
2 1. Roof framing and support members relative to duct penetrations. B. Wiring diagrams that detail power, signal, and control wiring. Differentiate between manufacturer-installed wiring and field- installed wiring. 1.5 CLOSEOUT SUBMITTALS A. Maintenance data for fans, for inclusion in Operating and Maintenance Manuals. 1.6 QUALITY ASSURANCE A. AMCA Compliance: Products shall comply with performance requirements and shall be licensed to use the AMCA-Certified Ratings Seal. B. NEMA Compliance: Motors and electrical accessories shall comply with NEMA standards. C. Electrical Component Standard: Components and installation shall comply with NFPA 70 "National Electrical Code". 1.7 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING A. Lift and support units with the manufacturer's designated lifting or supporting points. B. Deliver fan units as a factory-assembled unit to the extent allowable by shipping limitations, with protective crating and covering. 1.8 SEQUENCING AND SCHEDULING A. Coordinate the installation of roof curbs, equipment supports, and roof penetrations. B. Coordinate the size and location of structural steel support and framing members. 1.9 EXTRA MATERIALS A. Furnish one additional complete set of belts for each belt-driven fan. PART 2 - PRODUCTS 2.1 MANUFACTURERS A. Cook (Loren) Co. b. Greenheck Fan Corp. c. Twin City Fan & Blower d. Fantech (Model FG) 2.2 INLINE CENTRIFUGAL CABINET FANS A. General: Provide centrifugal belt driven inline type cabinet fans for exhaust ventilation service at locations indicated on the drawings. B. Fan Housing: Square design constructed of heavy gauge galvanized steel with duct collars. Fan housing shall be equipped with a hinged service door assembly supporting the motor, drives, wheel and inlet cone. C. Fan Wheel: Aluminum backward inclined centrifugal type, statically and dynamically balanced and overlapping a spun inlet venturi. D. Motor and Drive: Isolated from the airstream. Motor shall be heavy duty with permanently lubricated sealed ball bearings. Wheel shaft shall be ground and polished / 3
4 and mounted in permanently sealed pillow block bearings. Bearings shall be selected for a minimum (L10) life in excess of 100,000 hours at maximum cataloged operating speeds. Drives shall be sized for a minimum of 165 percent of driven horsepower. Pulleys shall be of the fully machined cast iron type, keyed and securely attached to wheel and motor shafts. Motor pulley shall be adjustable for air system balancing. Motor drive assembly shall include an OSHA approved guard. E. Electrical: Flexible wiring leads shall be provided from the fan motor to an external mounted junction box and disconnect switch. F. Fan Ratings: Fan shall bear AMCA certified rating seals for both air and sound performance. 2.3 CEILING FANS A. General: Provide ceiling exhaust fans at locations shown. Fans shall have published AMCA certified sound and air quantity ratings. B. Housing: Acoustically insulated, galvanized steel. C. Integral Backdraft Damper: Aluminum. D. Fan: Centrifugal wheel with inlet perpendicular to and remote from inlet grille. E. Inlet grille: Aluminum with baked off-white enamel finish or white plastic. F. Electrical: Terminal box on housing with cord, plug and receptacle inside the housing. G. Discharge: Aluminum wall cap with birdscreen and integral backdraft damper. 2.4 POWER ROOF VENTILATORS A. General: Provide power roof ventilators and prefabricated curbs of types, sizes and capacities scheduled on the drawings. Fans shall be AMCA approved for sound and air performance. B. Factory-built Roof Curbs: Constructed of aluminum or galvanized steel with rigid fiberglass insulation, wood nailer and counter-flashing. Minimum height of curb shall be 16". Constructed to conform with roof slope and arranged so that the roof ventilator is installed level. C. Motors: Heavy duty permanently lubricated, sealed ball bearings, suitable for continuous service, electrical characteristics shown on the drawings. Motors shall be selected to be non-overloading on any point on the fan curve. D. Drive Assembly: The entire drive assembly and wheel, removable through the support structure without dismantling the fan housing. The wheel shaft shall be mounted in heavy duty ball bearings. Drives shall be sized for 165 percent of driven horsepower. Bearings shall be selected for a minimum (L10) life in excess of 100,000 hours at maximum cataloged operating speeds. Pulleys shall be adjustable cast iron type keyed to the fan and motor shafts. The entire drive assembly shall be mounted on / 4
5 rubber vibration isolators. Each unit shall be provided with a factory mounted and wired disconnect switch. E. Dampers: Provide motorized or backdraft dampers as indicated on the drawings. Dampers shall be as specified in Division 23 Section, "Air Duct Accessories". F. Type "RE" Power Roof Ventilators: Fabricated from heavy gauge aluminum with unpainted mill-finish; hood removable for service access; V-belt or direct-driven as scheduled on the drawings; spun aluminum dome top with outlet baffle; centrifugal fan; square one-piece hinged aluminum base with venturi inlet cone and birdscreen. Ventilators shall be completely weatherproof and securely sealed and fastened to the roof curb. 1. Fan supporting framework shall be constructed of galvanized steel or aluminum members. 2. Fan wheels shall be nonoverloading, quiet-operating, statically and dynamically balanced. Fan shall be mounted on vibration eliminators. 3. Fan shafts shall be rustproofed. 2.5 PROPELLER FANS A. General: Provide packaged propeller fans of the direct driven type. B. Blades: Provide propeller fan blades constructed of aluminum, bolted or welded to the fan hub and statically and dynamically balanced at the factory. C. Mounting Panel: Provide steel mounting panel that forms a venturi bellmouth at the air entrance to fan wheels. Mounting plates shall be designed to rigidly support other parts of fan, motor and drive assembly without distortion; all edges shall be turned up or fitted with steel angles. Provide steel wall sleeve attached to mounting panel. D. Motors: Provide motors with nameplate rating not less than the actual brake horsepower required to provide the fan at the static pressure specified in the schedule. Motors shall be of the dripproof type and conform to NEMA MG 1. E. Guards: Provide each propeller fan with a removable inlet guard bolted to the fan plate, enclosing the blades and drive and fitted with hinged openings for bearing lubrication. F. Dampers: Provide motorized or backdraft dampers at fan discharges as indicated on the drawings. Dampers shall be as specified in Division 23 Section, "Air Duct Accessories". G. Finishes: All components shall be factory furnished and shall be provided with corrosion protective finish. H. Capacities: As scheduled on the drawings. 2.6 INLINE TUBULAR CENTRIFUGAL FANS / 5
6 A. General: Provide inline type tubular centrifugal fans at locations indicated on the drawings.. Each unit shall be of such design that it may be fit directly into the duct system in any position. The motor shall be isolated from the airstream and shall be V- belt driven. Uniform velocity shall be maintained through the unit and system. B. Construction: Fans shall be constructed for quiet operation and shall be of allaluminum construction, all-angle operation, nonoverloading centrifugal wheel, with bearing encased within the fan tube, and outlet vanes. Unit shall have AMCA certified ratings and shall have capacities and characteristics scheduled on the drawings. C. Fan Wheel: Fan wheel shall constructed of aluminum airfoil blades heliarc welded to the hub. Fan wheel shall have non-overloading characteristics. Straightening vanes shall be heliarc welded at the discharge side of the unit to eliminate turbulence. D. Fan Bearings: Bearings shall be selected for a minimum (L10) life in excess of 100,000 hours at maximum cataloged operating speeds. Bearings shall be regreasable ball bearings. E. Motor and Drive: Isolated from the airstream. Motor shall be heavy duty with permanently lubricated sealed ball bearings. Wheel shaft shall be ground and polished and mounted in permanently sealed pillow block bearings. Drives shall be sized for a minimum of 165 percent of driven horsepower. Fan Ratings: Fan shall bear AMCA certified rating seals for both air and sound performance. PART 3 - EXECUTION 3.1 EXAMINATION A. Examine areas and conditions for compliance with requirements for installation tolerances, housekeeping pads, and other conditions affecting performance of fans. B. Do not proceed until unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected. 3.2 INSTALLATION, GENERAL A. Install fans level and plumb, in accordance with manufacturer's written instructions. 1. Install roof curbs in such manner as maintain roof bond. Provide roof opening, flashing, counter-flashing, sealant, roof insulation and structural framing members. Secure roof-mounted fans to roof curbs with stainless steel hardware / 6
7 B. Arrange installation of units to provide access space around fans for service and maintenance. 3.3 CONNECTIONS A. Duct installations and connections are specified in Division 23 Section Metal Ducts. Make final duct connections with flexible connections. 3.4 ADJUSTING, CLEANING, AND PROTECTING A. Adjust damper linkages for proper damper operation. B. Clean unit interiors to remove foreign material and construction dirt and dust. Vacuum clean fan wheel and cabinet. 3.5 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL A. Final Checks Before Start-Up: Perform the following operations and checks before startup: 1. Remove shipping blocking and bracing. 2. Verify unit is secure on mountings and supporting devices and that connections for piping, ductwork, and electrical are complete. Verify proper thermal overload protection is installed in motors, starters, and disconnects. 3. Perform cleaning and adjusting specified in this Section. 4. Disconnect fan drive from motor, verify proper motor rotation direction, and verify fan wheel free rotation and smooth bearings operations. Reconnect fan drive system, align belts, and install belt guards. 5. Lubricate bearings, pulleys, belts, and other moving parts with factoryrecommended lubricants. 6. Disable automatic temperature control operators. B. Starting procedures for fans: 1. Energize motor; verify proper operation of motor, drive system, and fan wheel. Adjust fan to indicated RPM. a. Replace fan and motor pulleys as required to achieve design conditions. 2. Measure and record motor electrical values for voltage and amperage. C. Shut unit down and reconnect automatic temperature control operators. D. Refer to Division 23 Section "Testing, Adjusting, and Balancing for HVAC" for procedures for fan testing, adjusting, and balancing. 3.6 DEMONSTRATION A. Demonstration Services: Train Owner s maintenance personnel on the following: / 7
8 1. Procedures and schedules related to start-up and shutdown, troubleshooting, servicing, preventative maintenance, and how to obtain replacement parts. 2. Familiarization with contents of Operating and Maintenance Manuals. B. Schedule training with at least 7 days' advance notice. END OF SECTION / 8
