1 DEPARTMENT OF MARKETING MANAGEMENT PhD IN MARKETING MANAGEMENT (cde ) PhD THESIS INFORMATION 1. INTRODUCTION The value-adding advantage f this degree lies in the expsure t independent research and thus making a cntributin t the bdy f knwledge in the marketing discipline. PhD studies require a high level f enthusiasm and self-mtivatin. Building blcks twards the attainment f the degree are: expsure t research techniques and methdlgies; new insights int relevant existing marketing theries; empirical testing f hyptheses; integratin f findings, recmmendatins and cntributin t knwledge all culminating in the final thesis. 2. PROGRAMME The prgramme cnsists f the fllwing cmpulsry cmpnents: 2.1 EBW 801 Research Methdlgy This mdule will prepare the student t write a research prpsal. A candidate will wrk under the guidance f a prmter t develp a detailed research prpsal accrding t departmental guidelines and regulatins. The research prpsal must be defended befre a departmental panel and must be apprved befre the candidate can cmmence with his/her secnd cmpnent (BEM 995). The head f department may als prescribe anther mdule instead f / in additin t the EBW mdule.
2 2.2 BEM 995 Thesis The BEM 995 thesis can be cmpleted in either the traditinal apprach (including, but nt limited t, literature chapters, a methdlgy chapter, results chapter and cnclusins chapter) r by means f an article-based apprach (where the thesis is rganised as a cllectin f self-cntained articles). The decisin regarding the apprach t be fllwed is made by the head f department tgether with the prmter. It shuld be nted that a public defence f the final thesis is cmpulsry and frms part f the final evaluatin. 2.3 Research article utput Students fllwing the traditinal thesis apprach must submit a research article based n the student s research fr publicatin t an accredited jurnal. The article is a prerequisite fr the degree t be cnferred n the candidate. All articles frming part f the article-based thesis must be submitted t accredited jurnals befre the thesis can be submitted fr examinatin purpses. Articles d nt necessarily have t be accepted, but have t be submitted, befre the thesis is t be submitted fr examinatin. 2.4 Additinal mdules: The head f department reserves the right t prescribe any f the fllwing additinal mdules/seminars fr a candidate as part f the PhD prgramme: BEM 913 Cntemprary marketing issues BEM 914 Strategic marketing management BEM 915 Capita selecta: Marketing management

PRE-REQUISITES FOR ADMISSION TO THE DEGREE The minimum requirements fr admissin t the PhD (Marketing Management) degree are: A bachelrs degree in marketing up t final year A research-based master s degree with a clear specialisatin in a recgnised applicatin area f marketing management All applicatins are subject t a selectin prcess including an evaluatin examinatin. The fllwing selectin criteria will be taken int cnsideratin: Academic achievement Wrk experience: recgnitin f prir learning (5 t 10 years f practical experience in the relevant field f study r industry) Research ability Academic writing skills Within the Departmental research fcus areas 4. APPLICATION AND SELECTION PROCESS The phases f the applicatin and selectin prcess are as fllws: 4.1 Apply fr admissin n r befre 30 September (in the preceding year f study). All applicatins can be dne nline via the UP website: r at the Client Service Centre n the UP main campus in Hatfield (Tel ). Current registered UP students must apply nline fr admissin t the degree. N applicatin fee is payable. UP alumni wh interrupted their studies, need t apply fr re-admissin as a pstgraduate student. An applicatin fee is payable. Prspective students frm ther natinal r internatinal universities shuld first apply fr admissin t UP and thereafter fr admissin t the dctral prgramme f the Department f Marketing Management. An applicatin fee is payable.
4 Please nte: Internatinal students (with any prir qualificatins btained at a nn-suth African University) must have their qualificatins evaluated by the Suth African Qualificatins Authrity (SAQA) and must attach the SAQA evaluatin and cpies f the qualificatins and results f the Tefl/Ielts results t their applicatin frm. The head f department may refuse an applicatin fr admissin t the PhD prgramme: a) if the applicant des nt cmply with the standards f cmpetence required by the department; b) because f capacity cnstraints due t a large number f applicatins received in a specific year; r c) if the applicant insists t wrk n a research tpic that is nt aligned with the research fcus areas f r the expertise available in the department. Please nte: The head f department may prescribe additinal preparatry wrk and/r ther curses if the academic backgrund f the student is deemed unsatisfactry. 4.5 Faculty Administratin will infrm yu in writing befre mid-december f the utcme f yur applicatin and, if successful, prvide yu with the necessary registratin dcumentatin. 4.6 The Department f Marketing Management will infrm successful candidates by end f January whether all their dcuments have been received and ntify them f the pstgraduate registratin / infrmatin sessin f the department. 5. DURATION The maximum duratin f the prgramme is 4 years. Nte 1: Students must pass the Research Methdlgy (EBW 801) mdule in the first year and have their research prpsals apprved by the department t cntinue their studies in the secnd year. Nte 2: The research prpsal must be apprved by a departmental panel. If the prpsal is nt accepted at the first submissin, a student has nly ne final

It is nt a requirement that yu attend regular cntact sessins, althugh it is advisable t at least attend the registratin/infrmatin sessin in February f the first year and have regular sessins with the prmter. Yu als have t attend wrkshps n RefWrks, questinnaire design and statistical methds. In additin, yu have t defend yur research prpsal and final thesis at a cllquium. Electrnic means f cntact can als be pursued, where practical. Q4: What is the duratin f the prgramme? The duratin f the prgramme is a maximum f 4 years. Q5: D I have t write an evaluatin examinatin befre I will be able t register fr the degree? Yes, all applicants must cmplete the department s internal evaluatin examinatin. Q6: I have an MTech degree and a BTech degree. Will I be able t register fr the PhD degree? If yu had Marketing Management as a majr subject in the BTech degree and did Marketing-related research wrk in yur MTech dissertatin, then yu can apply fr the PhD prgramme fr cnsideratin by the selectin cmmittee. In all prbability yu will have t: (a) Cmplete additinal cursewrk (ne majr subject and tw minrs) selected in accrdance with the tpic f yur thesis.
9 (b) Cmply with a prficiency standard f subject knwledge (external examining cmpulsry). Q7: I have an MBA/MA/MSc degree with an engineering/scientific/nncmmercial undergraduate degree. Will I be able t register? This questin cannt be answered cnclusively because the academic detail f marketing subjects and wrk experience f the ptential student must be evaluated. Prir learning in Marketing-related subjects, marketing experience and the extent t which the student was frmally expsed t marketing principles wuld be taken int accunt.
