1 Coaches Compliance Meeting April 2015 Integral to ASU s focus on integrity is athletics compliance following the rules of the NCAA and Pac-12 Conference. Housing Employment ACS Jenna Housing 1

2 Housing Reminders For Student-Athletes Must follow dorm checkout procedure. Summarized in res life handout. Student-athletes who do not follow the procedure will be assessed fees. Must complete ACS Drug Free Sport summer contact form: For compliance related issues, and To avoid no-show drug test results. Housing Arranging Housing For PSAs ASU may arrange housing for a PSA who is enrolled in summer school only if the PSA: Signed an NLI, or Received summer school athletics aid. PSA must: Pay for the arranged housing, and Complete the ACS pre-enrollment form. Housing Questions All housing questions should be directed to Bill Kennedy 2

3 Voluntary Workouts Always allowed during the summer vacation period (begins May 10, 2015). Voluntary activities: May not be observed, supervised, or directed by coaches or sport specific noncoaching staff members; Attendance may not be recorded and information related to the activity may not be reported to coaches; Student-athletes must initiate the requests; and There is no penalty for missing and no recognition or incentive for attending. Conditioning Workouts - Student-Athletes Strength and conditioning coaches may design and conduct student-athlete workouts, if: The workouts are voluntary, and No other coaches or sport specific staff members are present. 3

4 Conditioning Workouts - Prospects In addition to the requirements of student-athletes and before participating prospects must: Undergo a medical evaluation within the previous six months (including sickle cell); Be currently enrolled in summer term classes* (opening day of class through final exam); and Receive Compliance Office clearance. *Football and basketball NLI signees do not have to be enrolled in summer term classes. Conditioning Workouts Prospects Not Enrolled May be in ASU facilities, but Cannot be directed or conducted by strength and conditioning coaches (i.e., they must work out on their own). Note: Prospects not enrolled in classes may not receive equipment or apparel. Coach Presence: Individual Sports A coach may participate in a workout session if the workout is: With a returning student-athlete (not a prospect) who initiates the request, and During the summer vacation period. Workouts may involve multiple student-athletes. 4

5 Coach Presence: Safety Exception Sports Workouts are initiated by the student-athletes and attendance is not recorded. Coach cannot conduct the workouts. Only safety instruction can be provided. Basketball Summer Access Length of Summer Access May begin during summer term classes. Can last 8 weeks. Do not have to be consecutive weeks. Student-athlete specific. CARA Limitations Treat summer access just like out of season. Eight hours total per week. Two hours max of skill instruction. No required days off. 6 Student-Athlete Employment Student-Athlete Employment Student-athletes must be: Paid only for work actually and already performed. Paid at the going rate. Summer Jobs Not paid because of athletics reputation. All student-athletes must complete the ACS Student-athlete Employment Form. Student-Athlete Employment Lessons Student-athletes cannot: Use their name, picture, or appearance to promote or advertise the lessons, or Use ASU facilities. Compensation must be from the person receiving the lesson or the recipient s parents. Compliance Office must have: Documentation of the recipient, and The fee charged for the lesson. 6
