1 What is that event? What does this mean? The A-Z guide to Deer Park **$1 Spirit Dress Day - Once a month, Deer Park hosts a Spirit (dress down) day. Parents may purchase a yearly Spirit Day pass at the start of the year, or people can pay as they arrive in the morning. The Spirit Day pass allows for non-uniform clothes that follow the Hillsborough County Dress code. This is a PTA event. All Pro Dads- A monthly character program and breakfast for dads and students from 7-7:30 am in the cafeteria. American Education Week- Is a national program to foster awareness of education and educational issues. Recognition of this program in Hillsborough County focuses on improving ties with the local business community. We celebrate American Education Week in November by participating in the Great American Teach-in. AR Testing- Voluntary computer program encouraging students to set reading goals and measure their comprehension of the book through online tests. Achieving your goals can get you in the Confetti Club, acknowledged during the school wide morning show, classroom rewards, and even lunch out with the principal! Awards Ceremony- Takes place at the end of each grading period for grades 3-5. K-2 has their awards sent home with the report card. K-2 will have end of year awards in classroom. Battle of the Books- This is a Hillsborough County district wide reading enrichment program. The purpose of the program is to encourage recreational reading, to offer a variety of types of literature, to increase familiarity with different authors, and to share books through written and oral expression. Research has found that students who participate in free voluntary, or recreational reading did as well or better in reading comprehension tests than students whose only source of reading was classroom basal reading instruction. It has been proven that reading as a leisure activity is the best predictor of comprehension, vocabulary, and reading speed. The fifteen titles are from the 3rd-5th Grade Sunshine State Young Readers Award books. In April, the fourth graders will be given a written test to select each class BOB Team. The test is to determine which students are the most familiar with all the stories from the books on the list. All participating schools have their local battle following the testing. The winning school team will move on to participate in an Area Battle. The district wide program is only for the fourth graders and the number of books available in the Media Center is limited. Many schools have expanded the school reading competition to grades 3 and 5 using previous Sunshine State books or the current year. The classroom teachers are encouraged to read these books to their classes. The students are also urged to use the area public libraries as well as the local book stores. The battle is a game show style event where the top three kids from each class compete against the other classes in their grade **BOO-HOO/YAHO Breakfast- Join other parents dropping off their children on the first day of school for a little boohoo or yahoo time in the library! Coffee, conversation, and light breakfast are all involved. This event is hosted by the PTA.
