6 Your responsibilities If you run a business, you are legally responsible for ensuring that the waste it produces or handles is stored, transported, treated, reprocessed and disposed of safely by a licensed waste carrier. You must put all waste out for in the sacks or bins provided by Hackney Council or another licensed waste carrier. If you put commercial waste on the street in unidentifiable containers like black sacks or put out more waste than you pay to have collected you could be prosecuted for fly-tipping and fined up to 50,000 or imprisoned. 7 Storage and transportation You must: store and transport your waste appropriately and securely check that your waste is transported and handled by people or businesses that are authorised to do so complete waste transfer notes to document all waste you transfer, and keep them as a record for at least two years. You are responsible for all your waste from when you produce it until it is disposed of. Working at private households If your business does any work at private households, any waste you produce is classed as commercial waste. This means you must make arrangements for its and disposal. Hazardous waste If you produce or handle hazardous waste (which may be flammable, corrosive or ecotoxic), you must comply with hazardous waste regulations. Whenever hazardous waste is moved or transferred, it must be accompanied by a consignment note, copies of which must be held for three years. Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Regulations The WEEE Regulations apply to electrical and electronic equipment. You must comply with the WEEE Regulations if you generate, handle or dispose of electrical waste.

8 Fees and charges 2015/2016 We have cut our recycling charges and frozen our residual waste charges. Customers are billed quarterly, and there are no hidden costs.
