How to write the world s BEST ESSAY EVERY TIME. Your teachers mark dozens of essays every day. So to get the best marks your essays need to have that extra something; they need to jump out off the page and punch them in the face with awesomeness. We want to show you how. Essay writing is a skill that you can learn and master. There is a formula that you can apply to every essay question and ensure you get the best possible marks that will separate you from the rest. Be prepared to dominate. From the team at Elite Education There are 280,000 English essays written in the HSC. This means that each HSC marker has to read the same essay at least 2000 times. Can you imagine how bored they must get? Most people would struggle reading one! So what if your essay happens to be the last one they get? It s 9:28pm on a Friday night; they ve already worked a long day at school. Their family is at home waiting for them. All they want to do is cuddle up on the couch and watch Masterchef. But then your essay ends up on their desk. Introduction.03 It s all about the intro. First impressions are so important. Make yours shine. How can you make sure your essay isn t treated just like every other essay they ve read that evening? You need to impress your marker. Just like you were going for a job interview or taking a girl on a first date, you need to do everything you can to make the right impression. Let us show you how. Conclusion.05 First impressions count; last impressions last. This is the last thing they read before they choose your mark. Make it count.

Top tips: Language counts. Your choice of language makes a big impression. Try and lift your level of vocabulary and avoid using the same word over and over again you don t want to bore your marker! Although it may not earn you actual marks, it will create a great overall impression. Be formal. Essay writing is not an art; it is a science. You need to be formal and technical. Avoid the slang and imagine you are writing a letter to the Queen. Buzz words. Your markers are going to be looking for specific words that they can give you marks for. Make sure you know what these words are in each topic. There are some that will always apply; techniques (naming them), context and purpose to name just a few. What your markers wish you knew: Essay writing is a formula. It is not about getting a good question or even remembering a thousand quotes from your text. It is about saying the right things at the right time to give your marker the right impression every time. Your marker is going to be looking for every mark they can give you. Believe it or not they usually want you to do well! This means you need to maximise every bit of space in your essay. Don t go wasting time rambling on about things that won t get you marks. Retelling the story won t earn you marks. Repeating the same point over and over won t get you marks. Stringing together clear concise arguments filled with buzz words that you can back up with examples are what will get you marks. It is particularly important to focus on the question and constantly return to it in your essay. The biggest hazard, especially in the HSC, is when students go in to the exam with a pre-fabricated essay that they have memorised and simply lay it down without any regard for the question. Being prepared is very good, but make sure you have the ability to weave in the new question. Create a great impression by constantly referring to the audience and the lessons the composer is attempting to teach. There are always messages in every thing you read/view/listen to. Dig these out- these are textual gold and will make you an essay-writing king or queen. Techniques!!! It is all about techniques. Find every technique you can and talk about it. You don t even need to pick tricky ones. Find the metaphor, explain why the composer uses it and describe how it further illustrates the point. Simple! There is no point talking about a techniques that, despite being great, is not relevant to the essay as a whole. Just choose the easiest techniques but explain it well. 2

Intro. Imagine you see the boy/girl of your dreams waiting for the bus across the road. You ve seen them several times in the past, but this time you re feeling confident- it s time to say something. You cross the road and approach them boldly. It could go 2 ways. Option 1; you race through your words, mispronounce things and end up babbling on about irrelevant topics. The value of a great introduction. Your teacher should already know your mark by the end of your introduction. body, but if your intro is junk it is pointless. Your introduction basically tells your marker what they can expect in the upcoming essay. They should be able to just read the intro, skim through the body (looking for your use of techniques), read your conclusion and BAM give you a straight up 20/20. Because of the value of the introduction we recommend you focus a whole lot of your time on the intro. Most of the body can be prepared, but you need to adapt the intro to the question. Your future bf/gf is not impressed. Option 2; you speak eloquently, get to the point and smoothly achieve your purpose. You just got a phone number! It is exactly the same with your essay writing. Most of the power of your essay is in the introduction. You could have the fattest, juiciest We usually find that introductions are the part that students struggle with the most, often because teachers spend all their time dealing with the prescribed texts and focusing on techniques to the detriment of the introduction. Whether you are writing your first essay in year 7 or about to tackle your HSC in year 12, nailing your essay introduction is a valuable skill to refine. Our introduction formula is on the next page. 3

Writing the perfect introduction: Here is our step-by-step guide to creating a 20/20 A++ intro every time: sentences about the concept. Don t even mention the question or the text yet. Show the marker you understand the concept and you know what you are talking about. 2. Introduce the core text and describe briefly how it conveys the concept. Introduce additional texts if required. 3. Talk about techniques (because everything in English is about techniques) and how this serves to further illustrate the concept. 4. Bring in the essay question and express your opinion. 5. Bring it home make it about you; the audience. This is what we see as the perfect essay introduction. Do this every time and you can t go wrong! The Body. English is all about techniques. Your essay needs to focus on the techniques; how does the composer use techniques to further emphasise their perspective? If the question includes the word how, it is all about techniques. State the technique; describe its purpose; give examples. Simple. Pack the body with as many examples as you can that back up the points you are making. Most students go in to exams knowing what they are going to write about in advance. The best essays are written by those who can adapt and mould their essays to answer the question. An example of one we see often is when dealing with character profiles. Rather than spending a paragraph on each character try to focus on themes or concepts, pulling in examples that will back up your arguments. Don t be afraid to spend a paragraph dealing with themes or concepts. You need to show that you have a thorough understanding of the topic and not just know your texts. As every essay has different requirements, we won t spend too much time dealing with the body. As long as you write a brilliant intro and pack your body with techniques you will be fine! Make an impression. We ve touched on it already, but so much of essay writing is about making the right impression. The best essay writers can score great marks even when they know nothing about the subject because they can create the impression that they are the most informed individual in the world. Think of a time when you have been impressed by someone what was it about them? Chances are it wasn t just one thing it was a number of things. It needs to be the same with your essay writing. You can t just do one thing right, you need to have the entire package. Work on refining your complete package skills. Don t just spend time on one individual thing everything counts. What s in the body? Here is an easy way to make sure your essay ticks all the right boxes: concept, example, techniques, purpose & outcome. Concept the concept is the way in which you view the essay. Example Choose a simple example and quote it. Techniques List all the techniques in the excerpt. Purpose What do those techniques achieve. Outcome Bring it back to the audience. 4

Think of it as the sweetest dessert. Your conclusion is the icing on the cake. Without a good conclusion your essay is like a TV show that finishes with a to be continued Your conclusion wraps the whole package up nicely. This is a section where a lot of students struggle. Perhaps due to time constraints or simply because they are unsure of what to do. This is your sign-off. In a speech you would finish on a high. In a sales pitch you would finish with a call to action. In the essay you We want to help you get the marks you need! It all starts now. Write good essays. Get a good ATAR. Go to the best university. Get a good job. Get promoted. Become the boss. Sell the company. Retire at 40. Live the dream. finish by addressing the impact the concept has on the audience. Revisit the question and make sure you have dealt with it. Summarise what you spoke about in the body but no need to go in to the details of techniques etc. Describe how the concepts increases the responders understanding of the world. Even if it doesn t make it up. Call us today! Elite Education The largest tutoring organisation on the Northern Beaches. a. 6/21 Oaks Ave, Dee Why, NSW, 2099 ph w. e. info@eliteedu.com.au
