Grade 8 Exploratory Courses Art 8 Get ready for a class that will get messy! In Art, we will explore various artists and media, including drawing, building and painting. This hands-on class is designed for anybody who has an interest in art and wants to learn tips and tricks to improve their skills. At the end of the term, we will celebrate our efforts by displaying our work in the art show! Wearable Art 8 (Offered Term 2) This course explores design and the concept of wearable art. Students will be introduced to an array of clothing artists, from haute couture, to pop culture phenomena, to local upcoming stars. Students will be expected to design wearable art throughout the course and to use other media like photography, Photoshop and music to complement the theme of their creations. Students will be expected to participate in a culminating fashion show as a requirement of the course. Mixed Media 8 Bright, colorful Pop Art is the focus here! We will look at the silkscreened works of Andy Warhol and oversized sculptures of Claes Oldenburg for inspiration as we cut, slice, and paint our way through this course. Throughout the semester, we will actively engage in the use of different media, including drawing, sculpture and painting. Band 8 (Yearlong course: must sign up for all 3 terms) Course Fee: $50.00 plus $210 for instrumental rental fee (Percussion rental fee is $30) The grade 8 Band will continue on from where the grade 7 Band left off. Previous band experience is a requirement for this course. Students who enroll in this class are expected to practice four times every week to improve their technical skill on their instruments. The band rehearses for the full year and will have the opportunity to play at three concerts, perform at the Red Deer festival and participate in clinics run by professional musicians. Additionally, the students will be participating in a band camp. The estimated cost per student for this 3-day intensive workshop is $200, which will be supplemented through fundraising. French as a Second Language 8 (Yearlong course: must sign up for all 3 terms) Students will improve their knowledge and application of the French language through reading and writing, games, activities and projects. Students will work individually and in small groups to improve their ability to read, write, speak and understand basic French through 3 selected modules. By completing this course, students will be able to take FSL

9, thus continuing on the journey of learning one of Canada's 2 official languages. Students should only take this course if they have successfully completed FSL 7. Baking 8 This course will prepare students to understand some of the techniques required to produce high quality baked goods. Students will use their understanding of ingredients, measuring and mixing techniques to safely create more complex baked goods. Study Skills 8 (Offered Terms 1 & 2) Study Skills is a flexible exploratory block. It may be a great fit for the student who is exceptionally busy with extracurricular pursuits and has no time for homework. It would be a good opportunity to focus on schoolwork in a setting where there is a teacher who can answer questions and provide support when necessary. Guitar 8 Level One This class is for students that have little or no experience with the guitar. You will learn the basics (music, strings, picks) of the guitar and learn to play many songs. Guitar 8 Level Two (Offered Terms 2 & 3) Prerequisite: Guitar 1 or other guitar practice This course builds off the basics. You can sign up for Guitar Level 2 if you have taken Guitar Level 1 or if you already have some experience with guitar. The focus of this class is on learning many different popular songs. There will be the opportunity to play along to your favorite bands with electric guitar too! Performing Arts 8 (Students must sign up for both Terms 1 & 2) Performing Arts offers students the opportunity to study, design and perform a full play. Last year, students successfully performed their interpretation of the classic Charlotte s Web. Classes will be a combination of learning new skills and rehearsing for the production. Students in this course will need to commit to some out-of-school rehearsal time and two performance nights. Performances will be held at the end of Term 2. Dates will be decided after consulting with students and their parents. Look out Broadway here we come!

Improvisation 8 Students taking this course for the first time will learn the core skills of improv: making/accepting offers, advancing, listening and staging. Skills will be taught through games and activities. Second year students will use their previous skills to form an improv team following the guidelines of the Canada Improv Games. Students must come prepared to participate every class and be a little crazy! Technical Theatre 8 Do you like to find ways to make performances look better? In the theatre world, the technical part of productions is very challenging. Students in Technical Theatre will demonstrate skills in the disciplines of lighting, sound, makeup, costumes, set design/construction, props, visual media and management. Project work includes designing a technical plan for a selected piece of text and/or exploration of an area of interest or passion in the technical field. Students will have opportunities to contribute to school events that involve technical expertise. Movie Magic 8 Level One If you like watching movies and are interested in making your own, this class is for you. We will learn all the steps needed to make a great movie and then create your own! Movie Magic 2.0 Film Festival This class is for students who have studied basic movie making before and now want to create a full movie. We will be shooting movies and then showing them in our first ever CLMS Film Festival. Metal Art 8 This course provides an introduction to basic jewelry making instruments and techniques to shape and polish metals. An introduction to this course will establish safety rules and lab procedures. Following this will be a series of projects of increasing complexity. Students will peen different metals together while following the basic elements of design (line, form, texture, balance and color). Projects will include a pendant, ring and bracelet or keychain. The aim of this course is for students to become comfortable in working safely to design products using mild carbon steel and/or a number of soft metals.

Woodwork Design 8 This course gives students experience in design, technological problem- solving, and craftsmanship in woodworking techniques. They begin by reviewing shop safety, tool use, and technical drawing, in the context of simple wood projects. Next, they learn the use of miter saws, routers, band saws, sanders, drill presses, and finishing techniques through the design and construction of a project of their own design. Spanish 8 After English and French, which language do Canadians speak most? After Mandarin, which language do people worldwide speak most? If you answered Spanish to all of the above, estas en lo correcto! (You are correct!) This exploratory will build on your prior vocabulario util, as well as add more common vocabulary and language skills that will allow you to make friends, travel, explore and otherwise thrive in the Spanish-speaking world. An additional course fee will be charged to pay for field trips. Outdoor Education 8 Course Fee: $ Field trips are extra. Do you hear the call of the wild? Do you want to get out there to see and touch the ecosystems pictured in textbooks? This class gives you the opportunities to do it. Students will have the chance to see how they can enjoy the outdoors in a safe and fun way. Yearbook 8 (Yearlong Course: must sign up for all 3 terms) By participating in this exploratory, you will have a direct voice and impact on what memories are captured forever in the CLMS yearbook. You will apply for, and be assigned to, a specific role on the yearbook team editor, photographer, page designer or an uploader /photo editor. You will be responsible for documenting important events that occur throughout the school year, along with advertising, learning the yearbook software, designing pages, taking photographs and bringing your energy and enthusiasm to a worthwhile project that will be published and distributed to your peers. We are looking for creative, responsible students who are able to work independently and have a positive attitude on a daily basis. You will be required to do work outside of school time (attend school events) so please be prepared and willing to do so. *** You will need to bring your POD to each class and owning a camera is an asset. Basic Photography 8 If you love taking pictures with your phone, posting to Instagram and Facebook, this is the class for you! We will be taking photography to a new level. You will learn how to

operate our brand new cameras, take amazing pictures and print them for our art show. All you need for this class is an interest in taking pictures. Advanced Photography 8 Prerequisite: Basic Photography If you have taken any photography course and are still interested, this course is for you! We will be shooting lots of pictures and then learning to do all sorts of cool things with Photoshop! All of the pictures you see in magazines and on posters use Photo-shop, isn t it time you do too! Hobby Shop 8 In this option, students will be given the creative freedom to build models of their choosing. Students may choose models such as cars, trucks, boats and even rockets. Fees will cover materials such as glue, paint and small modeling tools. The model kit needs to be supplied by the student. This course will culminate with a Show and Shine of all the models built during the term. Web Tools Great tools to put the polish on your projects! With the wide range of digital tools available, students have so many options for representing their understanding. When it comes time to do a project or presentation, it is important that the quality of the work be the focus. They don t have time to learn a new digital tool in addition to the task. Students will leave this class with a digital toolkit filled with options they can use to show what they know. They will be familiar with some great tools, and can easily work with them to polish projects in any subject. Course content to include: Google apps, extension and a variety of RVS approved tools. Webpage Design 8 What does a good webpage look like? Students will be introduced to basic web design using HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) and CSS (Cascading Style Sheets). Throughout, students will be introduced to planning and designing effective webpages; implementing webpages by writing HTML and CSS code; enhancing webpages with the use of page layout techniques, text formatting, graphics, images and multimedia; and producing a functional, multi-page website.

Green Living 8 Students will learn about different ways to reduce their impact on the environment. They will bring awareness to the school community through campaigns and projects aimed at reducing one s environmental footprint. Students will get to see how their efforts make an impact. Come make a difference in your life, your school and your community! Newspaper 8 (Yearlong Course: must sign up for all 3 terms) This exploratory introduces you to the newspaper industry. You will be learning newspaper jargon and vocabulary, researching and interviewing techniques, layout and writing styles. After exploring the layout of each section of a newspaper, we will create our own newspaper to be published for eager CLMS readers. You will also have an opportunity to publish your own creative works in the newspaper, such as poetry and short stories. Creative Writing 8 If you enjoy writing poetry or short stories, this course if for you! Learn different writing styles and develop your writing skills. We will discuss writing techniques used in genres such as mystery, adventure, fantasy and science fiction as well as studying different types of poetry. You will feed off the ideas of classmates in small and large group writing and critique sessions, as well as focusing on your own unique interests with individual assignments. Detective/Crime Fiction 8 Learn the origins of detective fiction, which is now more popular than ever in film, television and literature. We will study the specific elements of this style of writing as we look at the classic and modern forms of this unique genre. And we will use our critical thinking skills to solve crimes along side detectives such as Sherlock Holmes, Hercule Poirot, and Detective Olivia Benson.
