1 Department of Transport Department of Environment and Conservation Department of Health TravelSmart Workplace Access audit tool - medium to large workplace Location, transport facilities and services and corporate policy and practice will affect people s options for travelling to a workplace. Understanding these factors is important in planning actions to encourage active, sustainable travel. Use this audit tool to collect this information for medium to large workplaces (20 or more workers). How to complete the audit The audit involves a series of questions about your workplace including policies and facilities in it and surrounding transport networks and amenities. The audit covers: 1. Workplace policies and practices 2. Walking and cycling. Public transport 4. Teleaccess 5. Cars and motorbikes. For each of these sections there is a scale for scoring your workplace s current approach/situation and a series of questions to capture key facts. At the end of the tool is a table for adding up your workplace scores. The audit can be completed by one person or questions can be shared amongst members of a workplace committee driving your health, environment or transport initiatives. If you are looking at active, sustainable transport actions for a number of workplaces complete an audit for each one unless they are located next to each other. If corporate policies and practices apply across all sites, just answer these questions once. In answering the audit questions you may need to: Use your judgement about the situation at your workplace Observe your workplace, e.g. check the bicycle parking facilities, count the number of parking spaces provided Ask relevant sections, e.g. talk to your Facilities Manager or Finance section about the vehicle fleet, ask Information Technology about web or video conferencing Check the web, e.g. the Transperth website about public transport stops and services nearby Ask colleagues, e.g. someone who walks or cycles about hazards or amenities near the workplace. TRAVEL PLANS A travel plan is a package of actions for managing travel to a workplace. A travel plan is a good way to address barriers and opportunities raised in an access audit and so promote active, sustainable travel to a site. The TravelSmart Workplace program offers information and support to employers to develop and implement workplace travel plans. Using the audit findings The answers to the audit questions should highlight barriers and opportunities to employees and clients/ visitors using active, sustainable travel to your workplace. The barriers may be things your organisation can tackle, e.g. overcoming inadequate bicycle parking with new facilities. The opportunities may be things to promote to people, e.g. frequent bus services or the organisation s telework policy. Consider these in designing actions to encourage people to use active, sustainable travel options a workplace travel plan is a good framework for doing this. The audit can be repeated to check change over time for example whether information is now provided online about accessing the workplace or whether facilities have been improved. If you need advice on how to complete the audit or apply the findings contact the TravelSmart Workplace team (see back page for contact details). TRAVEL SMART A joint Australian, State and Territory Government Initiative under the National Partnership Agreement on Preventive Health
