Introduction Bearing are devices placed between two elements in a structure (deck and piers or abutments in the case of bridges), ensuring the transmission of loads from one element to the other. Apart from this main application, bearing devices must also allow or prevent- relative movements (rotation and movement) of the joining elements, and have a durability according to the life of the structure they are placed in. DECK ELASTOMERIC BEARING PIER COMPRESSION HORIZONTAL MOVEMENT ROTATION Among all different kinds of bearing, elastomeric bearings in their different types- are the best known and most often used. CTT, one of the pioneers in introducing steel reinforced elastomeric bearings in Spain, has developed its whole range of bearings SLIDE, that meets the requirements of most structures. 3
Material characteristics The basic components are elastomer and steel plates, yet there are certain types of bearings that include other materials, which will be defined in the corresponding section. CTT has created the formula of elastomer from a mixture of rubber and synthetic chloroprene that ensures the resistance to ageing required in the different international legislations. - Steel plates Minimal tensile strength kg/cm 2 Our bearings design and standard materials meet most usual regulations (MOPU, AASHTO, BS, NF). The standard mechanical characteristics are as follows : - Elastomer Hardness shore A 60+/- 5 Minimal tensile strength 176 kg/cm 2 Ultimate elongation 400% However, if the project specifications require so, CTT can produce bearings with special designs or using materials other than the usual standards, always guaranteeing the quality of the final product. 4
Different types of bearings 5
TYPE B Standard reinforced bearings It is the most usual type of bearing, having a rectangular or round plan form. They consist of intercalated elastomer layers and steel plates. Steel and elastomer are vulcanised together, thus obtaining a very high adherence between components. Besides, elastomer covers steel plates completely, thus ensuring their protection against corrosion. These bearings allow 15 N/mm 2 working loads. They allow all-ways rotations and movements. TYPE BS, BSD,EMBOSSED Anchored reinforced bearings This type in its different versions- is used when the minimum vertical load acting on the bearing is not enough to ensure that the structure will not slide on the bearing (it is then said that the bearing crawls). Type BS is the most common among anchored bearings and is obtained adding two steel plates to type B. These steel plates are anchored to the structure by means of connectors. They can be rectangular or round-shaped. 6
A variant of the former types is type BSD, that incorporates a double steel plate on the upper and lower faces of the bearing. The transmission of horizontal loads is made possible by discs located on grooves between both steel plates. These also allow the easy substitution of the bearing. Embossed bearings are a middle solution between bearings B and BS. Rough steel plates are located on both faces of the bearing in order to increase the friction factor between bearing and structure. All these bearings allow all-ways rotations and movements. Allowable working loads :15 N/mm 2 TYPE FL Sliding reinforced bearings These bearings are used when the required movements are too high and any of the former types would not meet the stability conditions. The bearing is vulcanised by adding to its upper face a 1.5 mm thick PTFE sheet. A mirrorpolished stainless steel sheet is placed on the PTFE (this plate has been previously welded on a steel plate), thus guaranteeing sliding between the structure and bearing, with minimum friction (less than 3% of the vertical load). Allowable working loads :15 N/mm 2 They allow all-ways rotations and movements. Pure virgin PTFE according to ASTM D1457 type 1, grade 2 Stainless steel sheet according to AISI 304. Upper plate Neoprene block P.T.F.E. Stainless steel 7
Bearings with restrictions Guided Bearing Parallel guides in the same direction as the movement Fixed Bearing DU Metal sheet Stainless steel sheet Guides parallel to both axes TYPE U Rubber bearings It is the most simple kind of bearing, since it only consists of one sheet of elastomeric material. Allowable working loads :10 N/mm 2 It allows all-ways movements and rotations. The bearings we have defined so far are the basic types, which constant feature is the fact that they allow all-ways movements and rotation. However, movements can be limited in one or all ways, thus obtaining guided or fixed bearings, respectively. In the first case guided bearings- the restriction is obtained by means of guides parallel to the supporting axe that allows movement. To make friction as low as possible, DU and stainless steel sheets are welded to the guides. If, on the contrary, a fixed bearing is desired, guides are added parallel to both axes, so that movement is completely blocked. 8

Quality control CTT elastomeric bearings are elaborated and produced with the highest warranty and quality materials, according to the loads and strain they are subject to. It is CTT s wish to carry on along the path of constant improvement, as the only possible way to achieve service and competitiveness. Therefore, CTT has chosen to implement a Quality system, having been awarded the ISO-EN-UNE 9002 certification. In order to obtain the highest customer satisfaction, our organisation and Quality control system have been designed to adapt to the requirements of current markets, thus being able to produce our bearings according to the different international standards: ASTM, DIN, BS, Our system is supported by a quality manual, a procedures manual and instructions related to both. This system is based on an exhaustive material control as materials arrive at CTT, together with a control during the production process that guarantees a highest quality final product. CTT complements its production and control system by means of periodical tests in accredited laboratories, whose results let us obtain: - E Module (compression test) - G Module (shearing module) - Ozone resistance - Fragility temperature - Rubber-metal adherence - Rupture and stretching strength. - Compression set - IRHD hardness - Hot-air ageing 18
Recommendations for its installation on job site When installing elastomeric bearings on job site, it is recommended that the design of the areas where they are going to be installed allows their performance in the best possible conditions, as well as an easy reach for later bearings inspections. It is also recommended that they are easy to It is recommended that the distance H between the deck lower surface and the pier upper surface (see picture) is not less than 15 cm in the less favourable point in the periphery of the mortar pads, in order to leave enough room for an eventual replacement of the bearings. replace, if necessary. In order to adequate the installation areas to these recommendations, it is necessary that the surfaces to be in contact with the upper and lower faces of the bearing are flat and horizontal. These requirements can be met by casting mortar pads on top of the piers and at the bottom of the deck. Such upper and lower mortar pads must be wider than the bearing, with an extra-width r, Deck with sloope Upper Lower Pier equals to height on all four sides, the edges having a slope of about 45º (see picture) Deck Upper CTT-STRONGHOLD,S.A Lower Pier Aribau, , 3º B Barcelona, España Tel Fax
