Chapel Hill Highlighters Drill Team Constitution Director Katie Hewitt Amendments approved by HS Principal, Dean and presented to CHISD Board of Trustees in March, 2014

PURPOSE/GOAL CHAPEL HILL HIGHLIGHTERS DRILL TEAM CONSTITUTION The purpose of the drill team shall be to perform and entertain audiences through precision drill and dance and boost the morale and spirit of the Chapel Hill Bulldogs. The goal of the drill team is to maintain an excellent level of performance while emphasizing behavior at all times. Remember, you are representing the entire drill team and Chapel Hill High School in and out of uniform at all times. People are always watching you and little ones looking up to you. Always show respect, courtesy, and maturity. MEMBERSHIP REQUIREMENTS The drill team will be made up of freshman, sophomores, juniors, and seniors. Drill team members must tryout each year. No one is guaranteed a position from one year to the next. Members who resign from the team prior to the end of the school year will not be allowed to tryout for the team without permission from the director. All rules and requirements as set forth in this constitution apply to all members. Members include drill team line members, officers, and team managers. Members will be held accountable to the no pass, no play guidelines. PERSONAL QUALIFICATIONS All drill team members must: Want to be a Highlighter. Gladly accept criticism that will help you attain perfection. Be willing to conduct yourself in a respectable manner in and out of uniform and obey all rules of this Constitution. Be willing to participate in group fund-raising activities and other drill team projects. Understand that any decisions will be made with the best interest of the team in mind. Have perfection as your goal and understand the high degree of determination, hard work, strength, and dedication it will take to attain that goal. Attend all performances as scheduled by the director. Maintain an appearance of neatness and cleanliness and adhere to the performance make up of the group.

Body jewelry, tattoos, etc. that are visible or are a distraction may not be worn. This distraction is decided by the director. Check with her before you invest money. Members not in compliance may be dismissed. Have a parent/guardian read the Constitution and sign an endorsement of their daughter s membership in the drill team. GENERAL CONDUCT RULES Drill team members are expected to behave in a manner that is becoming to the individual, as well as to the organization they represent. They should be aware that in or out of uniform they are representatives of the drill team and the high school they attend and should act accordingly. Maintaining a higher standard of conduct will also include ensuring that drill team members websites are appropriate. The internet is a worldwide, publicly accessible form of communication. Any communication such as Facebook, Twitter, or photo sharing, etc. appearing on the internet is public domain even if it is marked private. Drill team members are responsible for their personal websites and postings as well as for posting on other students websites. The area of appropriateness will include, but are not limited to language (abbreviated or alluding to), pictures, suggestive poses, clothing, reference to alcohol, drugs, and tobacco. Any question of appropriateness will be decided by the principal and director. ABSENCES Each member will attend all required functions. If a member is sick, a parent/guardian must notify the director or an officer PRIOR to the activity. An absence will be excused only if it is the nature that it would be excused by the school. The member must continue to dress out in class and practice unless told otherwise by the physician. Any missed practices or performances throughout the year will only be excused with a parent/guardian note and director approval. Work is NOT an excuse to miss any practice or activity. Daily attendance is vital to the success of the team. Approximately 3 weeks of summer practice will be required, usually in August. Going out-of-town is not an excuse to miss any drill team activity unless you have been given prior approval from the director because of an extenuating circumstance. Otherwise, absence may result in probation. PERFORMANCE Members will attend all performances as determined by the director. Members will not be allowed to eat in uniform unless given special permission by the director.

Members will sit as a team in the drill team section throughout the entire football game. Our primary responsibility is to perform for and support the Chapel Hill Bulldogs. No one is allowed to sit in the drill team section during the football game at anytime without prior approval from the director. No member may leave a performance early unless there is an extenuating circumstance, which will be determined by the director. Tryouts for weekly football, pep rally, and competition routines will be held at the discretion of the director. The director reserves the right to make cuts as she sees fit due to attendance, demerits earned, and performance ability in any particular routine. TRANSPORTATION When there is a school-sponsored trip to an out-of-town event, members must ride to and from the event on the bus. The bus cannot be held for late-comers. A drill team member may return from an engagement with ONLY a parent/guardian. The parent MUST sign the student out with the director before leaving the event. REQUIREMENTS FOR TRYOUTS DRILL TEAM The student must be enrolled in the Chapel Hill Independent School District, or is trying out at the school where the student is registered to attend for the next school year. Candidates must be in eighth grade, a freshman, sophomore, or junior at the time of tryouts. Candidates must have been a member of Sapphires, cheer, or dance class during the current school year. Only sophomores and junior returning line members who went through and were successful at line tryouts prior to officer tryouts will be eligible to try out for officer in the spring.

Any student who has an excessive number of disciplinary referrals will not be eligible to participate in tryouts without approval from the principal and director. Areas to be reviewed will include, but not be limited to, the reasons for the referrals, academic grades, other discipline records, student attitude, and any other factor deemed relevant by the principal or director. Any student placed in SAC more than one time during the current school year prior to sign-up will be ineligible to tryout. Any student placed in SAC or suspended during the tryout period will be disqualified. Any candidate who has been suspended or placed in alternative school in the year prior to tryouts will be ineligible to tryout. OFFICER In addition to the above drill team requirements, an officer candidate must be a sophomore or junior active member of the Highlighters Drill Team during the entire current school year, and must be in good standing in accordance with the Highlighter Constitution. TEAM MANAGERS In addition to the above drill team requirements, each school year, the Highlighters will vote on no more than 3 young ladies to serve as team managers. Managers will reapply each year, and complete the tryout packet as assigned by the Director. Managers should be extremely responsible, prompt, and organized. Managers should have basic first aid skills, and knowledge of running various types of sound equipment. TRYOUT PROCESS Three judges will be present who will be qualified in the field of drill team and dance. Each judge will critique the candidates on a dance routine with necessary dance elements. There will be no scoring for line tryouts. The judges will write critiques and mark their selections with YES, NO, or MAYBE. There may be call backs. For officer tryouts, the candidates will be scored 50% before tryouts based on teacher panel recommendations, leadership abilities, grades, citizenship, team vote, and director vote. The remaining 50% will be scored in front of judges based on dance ability and judges interview. The candidate with the highest score will be Captain The director, administrators, judges, and additional help will be present at the tryout location. Tryouts will be closed to the public. The director will determine the candidates dress for tryouts.
