FOREWORD BADMINTON England welcomes you to the CLUB future programme. A Decade of Delivery places clubs at the top of the agenda in terms of support and activity and CLUB future provides the structure to identify, nurture and deliver the Champions of tomorrow. The long term success of badminton in this country is very much dependant on a strong, vibrant network of forward thinking clubs that are accessible and welcoming, have good facilities and provide a range of coaching and competitive opportunities. CLUB future is about making a difference to clubs regardless of their size. It is about recognising that clubs have the most important role in badminton in this country and how we can work together to get more people into the game and offer a quality experience for players of all ages and abilities. The CLUB future brand is the sign of a quality badminton club and guarantees high standards. Premier Club level is recognised to Sport England s Clubmark standard. It demonstrates that the club has strong coaching and effective management in place and that it takes equality and child protection issues seriously. The responsibility that rests on the coaches and organisers of badminton clubs, albeit that these persons are often volunteers is a very important one. The CLUB future standard will give more people access to a sport which can benefit them throughout life. The scheme gives the framework to help badminton clubs provide a rich and rewarding experience to all their members. Giving young people the opportunity to experience the fun and excitement of playing badminton as a member of a friendly and supportive club can be a major influence on a young person s development. Our clubs need to be accessible and welcoming to everyone. By developing CLUB future, BADMINTON England is demonstrating it s commitment to encouraging quality badminton clubs. We hope that it will prove to be a valuable tool in helping clubs strive to become excellent models of good practice. BADMINTON England wishes your club every success as you work towards achieving this quality standard that is CLUB future and making a contribution towards BADMINTON England achieving its ambition to be the best in the World by Adrian Christy Chief Executive

INTRODUCTION CLUB future accreditation is the sign of a quality badminton club. It demonstrates that a club has quality coaching and effective management in place and that it takes equality and child protection issues seriously. The future of badminton depends on the widespread availability of opportunities for young people to gain a quality and enjoyable experience. Foundation Club acknowledges all affiliated badminton clubs, which are accessible and welcoming to everyone and those which are organised to the highest level and with the safest standards. National Badminton Centre Premier Club is BADMINTON England s Clubmark standard for junior clubs or clubs with junior sections and is awarded to proven high quality badminton clubs. Premier status means that clubs ensure the well being of young people, whilst enthusing them to enjoy sport and build a healthy and active lifestyle. They encourage young people to optimise their talents and support the development of the most talented. Performance Centre provides a platform to increase competitive opportunities and raise standards for all players. The structure of a Performance Centre may take on many guises: consortium of clubs, Premier Club, badminton centre, County Badminton Association. These environments will operate at local community level for badminton in clubs and schools, by establishing an infrastructure in order to nurture talent, Affiliated including Clubs the identification of athletes, coaches, volunteers and officials. High Performance Centres Performance Centres Premier Clubs Foundation Clubs Affiliated Clubs Participation Promotion and support BADMINTON England has a comprehensive development network to give support and advice to clubs: National Club Support Manager National Development Coach National Clubmark Officer Regional Managers Regional Officers County Badminton Associations A full range of benefits is available through the network to help promote and sustain a vibrant club development programme.

TOP TEN TIPS In partnership with Clubmark, BADMINTON England has put together our top tips to get you well on the way to success! 1. Identify one person to lead the process and don t let them get away! 2. Make contact with your Regional Officer or Regional Manager to assess what help and support they can provide. 3. Nominate individuals to manage each section (try to make it relevant to their role in the club already). The four criteria are: The playing progamme Safeguarding and protecting children Knowing your club and its community Club management 4. Contact your local County Sports Partnership (CSP) to inform it of your training requirements. In most cases CSPs organise a range of courses to support club development. 5. Book your places on the courses required in plenty of time: 2 members to attend Safeguarding and Protecting Children run by sports coach uk 1 coach to attend Equity in your Coaching run by sports coach uk 1 member to attend emergency training in first aid 6. Ensure everyone reports back on a monthly basis to discuss progress and highlight issues. 7. Make contact with your BADMINTON England appointed officer every month or so to keep the informed of progress. 8. Use resources on the website - to support your application. 9. Use and complete the relevant Declaration & Evidence Checklist to submit with your file, as this will help to ensure all criteria have been satisfied. 10. Ensure that you keep your (very simple) development plan up to date ready for the annual health check.

1 ACCREDITATION HOW TO USE YOUR RESOURCE PACK To accompany this pack, you should have received a Club Future disk, a Clubmark resource pack and the relevant Declaration & Evidence Checklist. The Clubmark resource pack complements this pack and disk, providing further relevant information and should be used to support the accreditation process. The Club Future pack is in five main sections: Section 1 details the application and submission process of Club Future accreditation, and the ongoing requirements once Club Future status has been awarded. Section 2 is the summary of the generic minimum criteria for a Club Future accredited club. Where appropriate, template numbers are given in brackets. The criteria are arranged in to four key areas that your club must address in order to achieve Club Future status. The Declaration & Evidence Checklist provides further detail and will be the foremost document when compiling your assessment file. The playing programme Knowing your club and its community Duty of care and safeguarding and protecting children Club management Premier Club is the pre-requisite criteria for Performance Centre status. For more information about Performance Centre criteria please refer your enquiry to your Regional Manager. Section 3 provides information and support on development and action planning. Good planning will allow clubs to gain all the benefits which arise from the process of planning. Section 4 focuses on good practice and volunteer management. This is not currently a criterion for Club Future but is an area of development that will significantly assist your club to achieve and sustain ongoing growth. Section 5 sets out templates that your club can use to assist in the development of its policy, procedures and practices. Electronic versions of each template can be downloaded from the Club Future disk or the BADMINTON England website HOW TO COMPILE AND SUBMIT YOUR ASSESSMENT FILE Your assessment file enables your club to collect and present to BADMINTON England all the information required to confirm you have achieved the criteria. Assess your club against the criteria shown using the relevant Declaration & Evidence Checklist. You will need to meet all the criteria in each section (does not apply to Performance Centre accreditation please refer to Regional Manager). The Checklist details all the criteria, the resources available to help you meet them, the type of evidence required to confirm you have achieved each one and a column to reference your numbered documentation. Answering questions in the Declaration & Evidence Checklist is sufficient evidence that you have achieved some of the criteria. Others require physical evidence, such as copies of certificates, which you will need to collect.

Note which criteria you already meet. Develop a plan of action to make sure you meet all the other criteria. Your nominated BADMINTON England Officer will be able to help you with this. Send your Assessment File containing your completed Club Declaration & Evidence Checklist, collected documentation and Presentation Form to your BADMINTON England contact. (Appendix 3) All evidence must be valid and up-to-date. Evidence provided with your assessment file will be valid for one year only, except for courses and CRB checks which are valid for three years. Once your file has been assessed and approved, you will receive formal confirmation that you are an accredited Club Future club, and where relevant have been awarded Clubmark standard. ANNUAL HEALTH CHECKS Annual Health Checks will be requested one month prior to the anniversary of achieving Club Future status. Your nominated BADMINTON England Officer will visit your club and assist in the completion of the Health Check. (Appendix 4 and Appendix 5) This is primarily a self-certifying process, but please ensure the following criteria are current and updated where relevant: Coach registrations CRB Checks no more than three years old Attendance on child protection, equity and first aid workshops are no more than three years old Club affiliation Equity Action Plan Action/Development Plan RE-ACCREDITATION Club Future status is awarded for a four-year period (Performance Centres three-year period). Your club will need to re-apply for Club Future status after that time. BADMINTON England will provide you with one year s notice and such notice will accompany the request for the 3 rd Annual Health Check. The Annual Health Check process helps to maintain evidence during the four-year period and will ensure that the re-accreditation process is straight forward and efficient. The original process for submitting your revised Assessment File will apply and your nominated BADMINTON England Officer will support and assist you in this process. You can submit your file as soon as it is ready for assessment after the third anniversary, but before the end of the four-year accreditation period to ensure Club Future status is maintained.

3 PLANNING CLUB DEVELOPMENT PLANNING A Decade of Delivery The objective of the strategy is a simple one to deliver SUCCESS. We have a solid foundation to build from, and that building will begin by growing the game at grass roots level with a much greater focus on our club network Adrian Christy, Chief Executive. A Decade of Delivery is BADMINTON England s development plan. Quite simply, within that plan the vision is to ensure badminton in England is: The world s no. 1 - WINNING MEDALS Growing the game - INCREASING PARTICIPATION Good and sound management - FIT FOR PURPOSE The vision and aspirations of most clubs are no different to the aspirations of BADMINTON England. As sport is rapidly moving into a more professional culture, the most effective way for clubs to develop and improve are to be involved in a simple and realistic planning process that sets your club on the path to a better future. WHY PLAN? Effective use of club resources Prioritising club aims and aspirations - SUCCESS Where are we now and where do we want to be Team spirit get the members involved in the decisions Improved access to funding support, such as grant aid, sponsorship etc. Demonstrates a professional approach What the club has to offer new members and players Commitment to the local community Raising the profile of the club and badminton Coping with change How are we doing? HOW TO PRODUCE A CLUB PLAN There is no right or wrong way to produce a plan, but the following guidelines should give you some positive ideas on how to get underway. There are two types of plan: DEVELOPMENT PLAN a long term plan (usually 3 to 5 years), this plan focuses on the club s future vision. ACTION PLAN a short term plan (usually 1 year), this plan prioritises the short term actions required to get the club on the right path to achieving its long term vision. Whatever you do KEEP IT SIMPLE!

WHO? The most difficult part of action planning is that it takes time which for volunteers, coaches and clubs is in limited supply! You will need to consider the best way of managing the process within your club. It is vital that members take an active role in shaping the club s future, therefore try to involve and consult the members wherever possible. Make sure that the participants involved in this process represent all interests in the club and not just a select few. It is recommended that a small working group is identified to carry out the necessary paperwork and action points. Keeping it simple and efficient will ensure SUCCESS! Further information on how to produce an action/development plan for your club see PLANNING CAN BE SPLIT INTO FOUR STAGES Step One: Where are we now? The Audit All clubs provide varying badminton opportunities for many different levels and abilities; therefore before you can begin to plan for the future it is important to consider the current situation. By undertaking an audit the club can identify it s strengths and weaknesses, as well as determining any possible opportunities or threats for development. This process will provide a clear base for setting some realistic aims and objectives for the clubs future. The Club Future Self-Assessment form is an ideal tool to start this process. Step Two: Where do we want to be? The Aims Having undertaken the audit you will have established where we are now and started the process of identifying where do we want to be. To ensure that the aims and objectives are achievable it is important to keep them uncomplicated and realistic. You should now be in a position to formulate a Plan to identify how you will achieve these objectives. Step Three: How will we get there? The Plan Once the club has completed the audit and identified the aims, planning should fall easily into place. The Plan identifies how you will begin to work towards the club s vision and achieve its aims. You will need to break down each aim into specific targets for your club to achieve in the first year and some proposed targets for future years. In order to produce a plan you will need to address the following five questions: The Target: WHAT do we want to achieve? The Action: HOW can it be achieved? Timescale: WHEN will it be done? Led by: WHO is going to do it? Resource: What will it COST in terms of money, time, people and facilities? Success: How do we know we have ACHIEVED our target and how will it be measured?

Step Four: The Review Once the plan has been agreed and is a working document, it is vital that the plan is reviewed and updated periodically annually at least. Monitoring and reviewing the club s progress is invaluable for ensuring that the club continues to move forward. Provided that the targets set in the plan are measurable, the process should be simple and not too time consuming. This process will not only look at future developments, but it will also help to reflect on where the club has come from and where it is now. Importantly, the club should not forget the volunteers who make it all happen. The club should formally recognise the committee members, administrators, coaches and officials, whom without the club would simply cease to exist. For further information on recognition please refer to the Good Practice Club Volunteers section within this pack. CLUB DEVELOPMENT AREAS AND STRANDS Template 26 can be used to assist you to develop the future plans of the club. The template has been put together based on the diagram overleaf, which takes into consideration what is important for most badminton clubs and the criteria of Club Future accreditation.

CLUB DEVELOPMENT AREAS AND STRANDS - Diagram Club Management Players People Finance & Administration Coaches Promotion & Publicity Volunteers Club Development Facilities & Equipment Matches Tournaments Festivals Club night Community Links Community Welfare & Equity Social Member Services

STRATEGY FOR RECRUITING YOUNG PEOPLE Recruiting new members is much easier if the club can demonstrate that it provides a quality environment and has a good record of achievement. The Club Future and Sport England Clubmark schemes are designed to help clubs achieve this standard. Get your club name noticed within the local community to get them through your doors and organise events which promote badminton to retain them within your membership. Publicity: Make sure your club takes positive action to promote activities, in particular focus on past success and forthcoming events. This can be achieved in the following ways: Accredited club this means that your club details are publicised via BADMINTON England, CBA, Sport England, CSP and other local partners. Make sure club details are available at any local information sites and websites, e.g. LA websites, libraries and club/league directories. Establish and maintain your own club website. Send articles and results to local media. Produce a regular club newsletter or e-zine/e-letter. Display a club notice board. Produce posters for schools and leisure centres Events: It is important to identify where your potential new members are most likely to come from and target your activities towards them. Most junior members will come from schools and leisure centres, and therefore recruitment will be most effective if you can establish close relationships with these partners. Although the range of events that your club can offer may be restricted by the club facilities and the age range of its members, it may be possible to organise taster sessions for example, in school time or on school premises. Recruitment events might include: Holding open days. Bisi Festivals or badminton tournaments. Parent and child or family sessions. Bring a friend session. Pay & play sessions (the pay element may be optional). Host a school or inter-school tournament. Host a friendly match. Turning players into members: Most junior players will be dependent on an adult before they can sign up to a long-term commitment. Parents will want to see that their children will be looked after and that they receive value for money within a quality environment. Your club will have a short timeframe to persuade the parent and the player that the club and badminton is for them. This requires a number of different skills, but the most important factor is to make the player welcome and provide an enjoyable experience. The following ideas may be helpful:

Produce a simple welcome pack to give to all visitors providing details about the club, its activities and its officials (use photos if possible). Introduce club officials and coaches to the parents and players. Obtain basic details of all players by asking them to complete a simple form and don t be afraid to seek feedback as well. Monitor new players throughout the session to make sure that players are included and participating. Make sure at the end of the session you thank them for coming and invite them back. Keep in touch.

4 GOOD PRACTICE CLUB VOLUNTEERS Without volunteers clubs would cease to exist. The work of volunteers enables a club to run, coaches to coach and primarily players to play. Volunteers undertake a whole variety of tasks so that members get value for money: Administration Nets and shuttles Refreshments Facility hire and/or maintenance Fund-raising Club meetings External club meetings Coaching Managing child protection and equality policies Maintaining club funds Member, coach and volunteer recruitment BADMINTON England has compiled various templates for club roles, which can be used as required. With the exception of the template for the role of the Welfare Officer, the role descriptions provided in Templates Section 4, are not definitive or exhaustive, and can be adapted to suit your club and volunteer needs. The templates provided are as follows: Chairperson Secretary Treasurer Welfare Officer Match Secretary Volunteer Co-ordinator Publicity Officer Tournament Co-ordinator Coaching Co-ordinator Junior Co-ordinator Head Junior Coach Assistant Junior Coach CRB DISCLOSURE CHECKS BADMINTON England require registered coaches and recommend club volunteers in regular contact with young people and/or vulnerable adults, to undertake a BADMINTON England Enhanced Disclosure CRB check. Application forms and instructions can be obtained from the Safeguarding Children Administrator at BADMINTON England.

REWARDING VOLUNTEERS English Badminton Award The English Badminton Award was instituted in 1993 for long standing exceptional service to badminton in England and it is BADMINTON England s most prestigious volunteer award. Should you know someone who you believe is worthy of this award please contact your County Badminton Association. National Badminton Awards BADMINTON England s own annual award scheme is the National Badminton Awards. The Awards were instituted in 2003 to recognise the efforts, dedication and achievement of volunteers over the preceding 12-month period. It is an ideal way to thank a volunteer or to recognise their contribution to your club. You can nominate them for one of the following: Volunteer of the Year Young Volunteer of the Year (aged 25 or under) The winners are announced and presented with their award and prizes at the Yonex All England Championships. All nominees receive a letter of thanks. For further information please visit the website Local Awards There are many awards promoted by CSPs, local authorities, businesses and local media to name but a few, which recognise and celebrate the work undertaken by your club volunteers. BADMINTON England is always pleased to learn of volunteer achievements. Just volunteering@badmintonengland.co.uk

CCPR SPORTS CLUB of the YEAR AWARDS CCPR (Central Council of Physical Recreation) is the national alliance of governing and representative bodies of sport and recreation. The Sports Club of the Year (SCOTY) awards are run annually by CCPR in association with the Foundation for Sports and the Arts. The SCOTY awards seek to reward and recognise the important role played by grassroots sports clubs within the United Kingdom. Each year cash prizes are distributed amongst six SCOTY winners. As a National Governing Body member of CCPR, BADMINTON England is encouraged to endorse applications from up to three clubs in order that they may be considered for the awards. To be eligible, any application for a SCOTY must be endorsed by BADMINTON England. BADMINTON England notifies clubs once nominations are open and selects three from all applications received. Selection is based on the quality of the application and ultimately how BADMINTON England believes the application will be judged by CCPR. To be eligible for selection, clubs must have been awarded Clubmark standard. For more information about the SCOTY awards please visit STEP INTO SPORT Sport relies on 1.5 million volunteer officials, coaches, administrators and managers. Clubs working towards Clubmark are eligible to register as Step into Sport (SiS) placement clubs. The programme is funded by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport as part of the national Physical Education, School Sport and Young People (PESSYP) strategy. SiS focuses on young people aged 14 to 19 years old, giving them opportunities to become involved in sports leadership and volunteering, and encouraging them to continue this into later life. If your club is actively working towards Clubmark and believe that you could offer young people a safe and high quality placement at your club, please complete the registration form at Appendix 6 and return it to BADMINTON England.

5 TEMPLATES HOW TO USE THE TEMPLATES These templates are provided to help your club produce development plans as well as format policies, procedures and printed matter.
