2 Frequently Asked Questions Keep This Page for Your Records What are the 9-14 models? 9-14 model schools are public schools that bring together the best elements of high school, college, and career. Each "school" (school, program, and academy) has an industry partner as well as a college partner. All 9-14 schools offer students to earn a high school diploma and associates degree in 4, 5 or 6 years from CCRI. Students earn the college degree at no cost. Who are the partners? The Tech Collective is the industry partner for PCTA P-TECH. Community College of Rhode Island (CCRI) is the college partner. What is the role of the Industry partner? The industry partner represents a high growth industry, and brings insight into the skills and qualities they seek in prospective employees. They help to establish the associate s degree that provides the best foundation for the students to being careers. The industry partner also contributes to student learning through mentoring, site visits, internships, and other workplace learning experiences. What is the role of the College partner? The college partner, CCRI, enrolls PCTA P-TECH student at the college, provides them with a college advisor, and graduates students with an applied associate s degree in computer science. Students have the option of continuing their education at a four-year university or seeking employment in the field of information technology. How is PCTA P-TECH funded? While some grant funding was secured in year one, the academy will be funded by Providence Public Schools. Teachers are hired as PPSD teachers employed at PCTA. There are no grant funded positions at the academy and we receive no monetary funding from our partners or from other funding sources. Both partners contribute generously through their in-kind efforts, including facility use, mentoring, etc. Are Providence P-TECH students enrolled in college? Students participate in a 3-week summer academy with CCRI and are enrolled as college students when they enter 9th grade. How is college readiness determined? College readiness is determined by a number of data points including Accuplacer results, grade point average, high school course placement and teacher recommendation. How do students enroll in the program? Students residing in Providence can apply to the program for the 9th grade; PCTA P-TECH accepts up to 50 students each year through a lottery. All 9-14 model schools are open enrollment there are no prerequisites or testing for admission, once enrolled, students are registered as PCTA HS students. How long does it take to graduate the program with both the high school diploma and college degree? Students can graduate the program, with both a High School Diploma and an Associate s degree, in as little as four years or up to six years. We encourage students to take college course as soon as they are ready to do so, but tailor each student s path to their particular needs, interests and goals. Students wanting a more traditional high school experience may elect to take college courses after they have completed their high school program.
3 Frequently Asked Questions Continued What degree options are available to PCTA P-TECH Students? The degree options available to PCTA P-TECH students are Network Infrastructure and Software Development. Students must complete PCTA general education requirements in Science, History, English, and Math. In most cases, general education course will count towards the high school diploma and degree requirements. What degree options are available to PCTA P-TECH? Which classes do students enroll in during the program? To build foundational skills and prepare students for college courses, students enroll in a double-period of English and Math, and workplace learning will be taught by PCTA P-TECH teachers and CCRI Faculty. What is workplace learning (WPL)? Workplace Learning is a critical element of the 9-14 models. At PCTA P-TECH, students participate in a year-long course each year of high school to develop workplace readiness skills through classwork, presentations, mentoring, internships and more. How many 9-14 schools exist nationwide? PCTA P-TECH becomes the first "9-14 School" in Providence in September Three programs will open in the State of RI. As of 2016, there will be over 40 "9-14 schools" throughout the USA and one in Australia.
