WHAT IS TOGAF? your recipe book for enterprise architecture recipes and proven best practices.

TOGAF what is it? features TOGAF= The Open Group Architecture Framework (TOGAF 9.1) the leading framework that provides a comprehensive approach for designing, planning, implementation, and governance of enterprise information architecture. A generic framework rooted in best practices to meet different business needs. Originally based on TAFIM (U.S. DoD)

HISTORY of TOGAF Customer members demand architecture standards. Customer members select TAFIM as preferred starting point. DoD Information Systems Agency (DISA) donate TAFIM as base TOGAF first published TOGAF 7 Technical Edition TOGAF 9 Enterprise Edition TOGAF 9.1 TOGAF The Interoperable Enterprise Business Scenario first published TOGAF 8 Enterprise Edition First TOGAF Certification Program Launched

TOGAF key features An architectural framework Presents a set of services, standards, design concepts, components and Configurations Vendor-neutral developed by user consensus A valuable tool for: Designing a broad range of architectures Assisting the evaluation of different architectures Selecting and building the right architecture for an organization The use of TOGAF results in: The use of common principles, assumptions and terminology The development of information systems with better integration and interoperability, especially with respect to issues that affect the whole enterprise

WHO implements it? Governmental agencies in the US DOD States FBI Corporations & enterprises (examples) Exxon Starbucks Pepsi Telco (1.5 B euro). DHL

TOGAF a holistic approach The fragmented way in which IT services are being built over different departments, or even by external parties, makes the development and day-to-day management of these services even more complex. This explains the more holistic approach of existing models to keep a grip on all elements in the supply chain. Today s IT is often a combination of many components that need to be aligned seamlessly in order to be perceived as service to the end user.

TOGAF 9 contents PART I (Introduction) - high-level introduction to the key concepts of enterprise architecture ; TOGAF approach PART II (Architecture Development Method) - the core of TOGAF. It describes the TOGAF Architecture Development Method - a step-by-step approach to developing an enterprise architecture. PART III (ADM Guidelines and Techniques) - guidelines and techniques for applying TOGAF and the ADM. PART IV (Architecture Content Framework) - describes the TOGAF content framework, including a metamodel for architectural artifacts, the use of architecture building blocks, and an overview of architecture deliverables. PART V (Enterprise Continuum & Tools) - discusses appropriate taxonomies and tools to categorize and store outputs. PART VI (TOGAF Reference Models) - provides the Technical Reference Model, and the Integrated Information Infrastructure Reference Model. PART VII (Architecture Capability Framework) - discusses the organization, processes, skills, roles, and responsibilities required to establish and operate an architecture function within an enterprise.

Opportunities & Solutions

Steps for each Phase (cont.) 1. Initiation & Framework 4. Opportunities & Solutions Evaluate and select major work packages 7. Architecture Maintenance 2. Baseline Description 5. Migration Planning Prioritize work Develop outline plan Requirements Management 6. Implementation Develop full plan Execute 6. Implementation 3. Target Architecture 7. Architecture Maintenance Establish procedure for maintenance of new baseline 5. Migration Planning 4. Opportunities & Solutions

TOGAF 9 components How do we manage EA? How do we map information that is needed? What best practice models have already been created? How do we implement TOGAF? How can we maximize recycling of existing architectures? How do we design our EA?

TOGAF strategic tactical TOGAF & ITIL COMPARED ITIL operational the two compliment each other nicely. TOGAF working at a strategic level and ITIL working at an operational level.

Architecture domains TOGAF can support any of the following architecture domains. Business Architecture - the business strategy, governance, organization, and key business processes. Data Architecture - the structure of an organization's logical and physical data assets and data management resources. Application Architecture - a blueprint for the individual application systems to be deployed, their interactions, and their relationships to the core business processes of the organization. Technology Architecture - the logical software and hardware capabilities that are required to support the deployment of business, data, and application services. This includes IT infrastructure, middleware, networks, communications, processing, standards, etc.
