The Parents & Carers Guide to the Internet Child Exploitation & Online Protection Centre (CEOP) Video ~ 25mins Introduction Talking to your Child Cyberbullying Online Content Sharing Inappropriate Content Online Gaming Setting Boundaries Advice & Information

Introduction Early computers ~ WW2 (1940s) Internet history is short (www ~ 1990s) Ubiquitous access What children do online Social Networking Play games Watch films (YouTube), listen to music Parenting online is similar to parenting in the real world

Talking to your Child Understand what Children do online Social networking, what is a friend? Online vs offline behaviours People are not always who they say they are Keeping in control Who has access to information about you? Privacy Controls What is being shared? Stranger danger same conversation (real world) just different context

Cyberbullying Ubiquitous access people getting bullied all the time Important things to do Talk to child reassure them & provide emotional support Help them to keep evidence Report incidents to service or applications provider (ISP, games, etc) If in danger call police

Online Content Sharing Think before you send or share information Be careful what you publish (esp pictures, videos) Avoid personal information Constrain who can access content (Privacy Controls) Acid Test - If you re comfortable sharing information in real life then it s probably safe in the virtual world. But, once shared you have no control!

Inappropriate Content Internet was designed to share information Control what material is accessible especially younger children Assumption that children won t come across pornography is false Talk about real relationships

Gaming Use parental controls (Xbox, Wii, Playstation etc) Understand PEGI & film ratings including content descriptors (violence, sex, gambling etc) Interactive games can be played with anyone in the world Maintain healthy & balanced lifestyle get some exercise! Take regular breaks

Set Boundaries Set time limits for online activity Ensure your child takes regular screen breaks Ensure you child thinks before sharing anything online (e.g. pictures & videos) Ensure you child doesn t give out personal information to people they don t know Ensure that your child has the confidence to come to you if they have any concerns

Internet Devices in the Home - 1 Game consoles Hand held games Smartphones 22% of year olds access the Internet through a games console. Most children use some type of gaming device seven in ten 5-7s (70%), nine in ten 8-11s (87%) and eight in ten 12-15s (83%). Six in ten year olds now own a smartphone, changing the way that young people are accessing the Internet. Among those aged with a smartphone, an estimated 184 Instant Messages are sent in a typical week. Mobile phones 8-11 year olds send an average of 54 texts a week but this rises to 225 for year olds. Tablet computers 4 in 10 children aged 5-15 use a tablet at home, 3 times higher than in % of 5-7s, 18% of 8-11s and 26% of 12-15s have their own tablet. Source: Ofcom Report Oct 2013 Children and Parents Media Use and Attitudes Report

Internet Devices in the Home - 2 TV Digital, Satellite, Internet 45% of households with 5-15 year old children have set parental controls on multichannel TV. 37% of 5-7 year olds have a TV in their bedroom, rising to 53% for 8-11s and 62% for 12-15s. Computers 1 in 4 (25%) of year olds have ever accessed their main social networking site profile through a desktop PC, which is being rapidly overtaken by laptop/notebook at 67% and mobile phone at 61%. Laptops 1 in 5 (22%) of 8-12s have an active profile on social networking sites that require users to register as being 13 or over (e.g. Facebook). Two in five of year olds have Internet access in their bedrooms. The average 8-11 year old spends over 9 hours online each week. Source: Ofcom Report Oct 2013 Children and Parents Media Use and Attitudes Report

What parents worry about 63% of parents of year olds think their children know more about the internet than them. 24% of parents of children aged 5-15 are concerned about online bullying. 21% of parents of 8-11 year olds are concerned with mobile location services. 71% of parents of 5-15 year olds are not concerned about personal details being given out. Only 16% of parents of 5-15 year olds are concerned about what their children may view on the internet. Source: Ofcom Report Oct 2013 Children and Parents Media Use and Attitudes Report

What children worry about. Many of the concerns that parents have about technology and the internet are shared by young people. Top two: 57% of children worry about the content they see. 32% of children worry about the way people behave online and contact from people they don t know or don t want to be in touch with. Source: EU Kids Online Survey in 2013

Some Key Safeguards Understanding what's going on, taking simple steps and talking to your children will put YOU in control. Some things that we can ALL put in place to keep ourselves and our families safe online: 1. Patch System and keep AV up to date 2. Use Parental Controls on internet enabled devices. 3. Setting up SafeSearch and SafetyMode. 4. Use Privacy Settings on programmes and applications you use. 5. Passwords on everything 6. Beware, things are not always as they seem

Protect Internet Devices Patch, Patch & patch again! Ensure firewall is up & running BB Router Windows Mac Security Essentials Use Anti-Virus

ISP Provided Controls 4 big internet providers in the UK BT, Sky, TalkTalk and Virgin Media - provide their customers with free parental controls which can be activated at any time. BT Parental Controls: Sky Broadband Shield: TalkTalk Homesafe: security Virgin Media: Web Safe (Child Safe, Virus Safe) F-Secure SAFE

Parental Controls - Gaming Most consoles have Parental Controls settings. Use these to control access to online gaming services and ensure age appropriate content (PEGI ratings help)

Google SafeSearch 1. Open Search Settings 2. Turn on SafeSearch to filter explicit results

Google SafeSearch If you have a Google Account, you can lock SafeSearch on your device so that filter explicit results is always in place and no-one except you can change the settings. After clicking on filter explicit results, click on Lock SafeSearch. If you re not already signed in to your Google account, you ll be asked to sign in. Remember to click Save at the bottom of the page to save your SafeSearch settings. Please note: If you have more than one browser or if you have different user profiles for everyone on the family computer, you ll need to set the lock on each one. When SafeSearch is locked in place, you ll see a set of coloured balls at the top of all search pages. If the coloured balls aren t there, SafeSearch is no longer locked.

YouTube Safety Mode

Privacy Settings

Privacy Settings Once you select Privacy you will be able to edit your settings. Accounts for young people under the age of 18 automatically have some privacy settings in place. Sensitive information, such as their contact information, school and birthday will not appear in Search to a public audience.

Passwords Passwords provide access to sensitive & valuable information Passwords are like underwear. Don t leave them lying around in the open Change them regularly Don t loan them to strangers The longer the better Exotic is good too!

Things are not always what they seem
