1 DROP SLEEVE SHIRT: Materials: About 2 yards of 48 to 54 inch wide fabric or 3 yards of 36 inch wide fabric. Period correct fabric: linen or cotton, usually white. Acceptable fabric: unbleached muslin, red or blue mattress ticking, light canvas duck. Unacceptable fabric: modern calico or prints. Choosing size: The following cutting directions show three different shirt sizes: small, medium, and large. Team Shirts: Choose the large size for making shirts that will be the property of the ceremony team. Shirts of different sizes can be added to the team s costume inventory as needed. Individual Shirts To choose the proper size for an individual the following measurments will be needed: chest size, neck size, arm length from the shoulder to the wrist, and body length from the shoulder to mid thigh. The width of the shirt body pieces is 1 /2 your chest measurement plus about 6 inches. Use this measurment when choosing pattern size. The length of the shirt body is your body length from the shoulder to the middle of the thigh. The length of the collar is your neck size plus about 4 inches. The length is your arm length minus about 3 inches. Adjust the chosen pattern size using the above measurments. Then proceed to lay out and cut out the necessary shirt pieces.

2 Layout and Cutting 36 inch Wide Fabric: [NOTE] Prewash the fabric before cutting it. Some fabrics shrink when washed. [NOTE] Some fabrics can be torn to desired size pieces. Check to see if the fabric will tear by making a small starter cut in the edge of the cloth several inches from the end. Then pull the two sides of the fabric in opposite directions. If the fabric tears easily and straight, continue to tear off the end to square up the fabric. [NOTE] Since all the shirt pieces are rectangles or squares, it will be easier and faster to tear all the shirt pieces to size than to cut the pieces to size. If the fabric can not be torn to size, use a stright-edge and a marking pencil to lay out the shirt piece for cutting. Shirt Body: Body Size Small Medium Large Width Length If the shirt pieces are to be cut out by tearing the fabric, start by measuring two times the body length of the shirt along the edge of the fabric. Tear off the remainder of the fabric (first tear). Next, measure the width of the shirt body and tear off the leftover fabric (second tear). Finally. tear the two shirt body pieces apart (third tear ). Finish cutting the shirt body pieces to shape. Fold the body piece in half lengthwise. Mark a point 7.5 inches from the fold along the top of the piece and a second point 1 inch down the fold. Connect these two points with a curving line. Cut along the line.
