3 Welcome The Skills Centre has been training the next generation of skilled tradespeople since We provide an ever-expanding range of construction apprenticeships on behalf of our partner organisations. These employer-led apprenticeships combine classroom-based theoretical learning with workshopbased practical skills sessions and on-site employment experience. Our team provides great training and facilities in order to nurture the quality tradespeople of the future. We pride ourselves on our high standards and, in return, we expect our apprentices to demonstrate the same commitment and dedication to their learning. 4 The Skills Centre Our training and facilities are second to none, providing the best start to people who are already in trade-related employment but who want to develop their skills and experience further. The Skills Centre recruits apprentices from January to June each year. We offer: employer-led, work-based learning a team of highly qualified, experienced tutors quality courses which cover all elements of your chosen trade a suite of workshops dedicated to each of the different trades an Eco Room for training in solar thermal and solar photovoltaic systems small class sizes personal one-to-one support for each apprentice from our Learning Mentor a varied enrichment programme, involving trips and visits to deepen your knowledge and understanding of your chosen trade and the industry as a whole

5 From strength to strength The Skills Centre has a well-established reputation among employers, professional trade bodies and training organisations for the quality of its apprenticeships and other courses. Ofsted inspectors have praised us for our outstanding partnership working with employers, contractors, schools and other training providers. We were named Large Pre-Apprenticeship Employer of the Year in the Walsall Works Celebration Awards for our work to help young people into training and employment. The Skills Centre was awarded the Matrix Standard from the Department of Business Innovation and Skills in recognition of the quality of the information and guidance we give to learners and colleagues about learning and work

6 Electrotechnical Installations LEVEL 3 NVQ DIPLOMA Entry requirements GCSE maths (grade C or above), GCSE English (grade C or above) and, preferably, GCSE ICT (grade C or above). Course content During your study you will cover: health and safety legislation environmental legislation practices and procedures for overseeing and organising the work environment principles of planning and selection for the installation of electrotechnical equipment and systems practices and procedures for the preparation and installation of wiring systems and electrotechnical equipment cable termination inspection and testing fault finding and electrical principles. How will you be assessed? Portfolio of evidence and on-site assessments, classroom theory and exams. What next? Higher level qualifications offered through the Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM)

7 Electrotechnical Installations LEVEL 3 NVQ DIPLOMA Raffaella Coppola, aged 20, from Oxley, was doing office work before becoming an electrotechnical installations apprentice with Central Electrical Contractors in Wolverhampton. She says: My course and the facilities at The Skills Centre are really good. It can be hard to get into a trade these days so I would definitely recommend the apprenticeships they offer here. I m doing well and really enjoying it

8 Plumbing and Heating LEVEL 2 NVQ DIPLOMA Entry requirements GCSE maths (grade C or above), GCSE English (grade C or above) and, preferably, GCSE ICT (grade C or above). Course content During your study you will cover a range of knowledge and skills to enable you to work as a plumber, across areas including: How will you be assessed? 9 Site Carpentry/Wood Occupations LEVEL 2 NVQ DIPLOMA Entry requirements Educated to a good standard essential. GCSEs at grades A-D preferable. Course content The course provides the opportunity for individuals who wish to specialise in site carpentry to demonstrate their competence. During your apprenticeship, you will work on a range of practical skills for many carpentry and joinery applications, along with underpinning knowledge of the trade. How will you be assessed? Portfolio of evidence and on-site assessments, classroom theory and exams. What next? Progress to Level

10 Jake Tolley, aged 23, from Wednesfield, is a maintenance operations apprentice with Cannock Chase District Council, having already completed a plumbing apprenticeship. He says: The Skills Centre is brilliant because it has got everything set up in one place, the courses cover everything you need to know and the tutors are very knowledgeable and supportive

She says: I love what I do and the apprenticeships are great because they combine the theory of what you need to learn with the experience you need to really do the job well

14 Electrotechnical Installations LEVEL 3 NVQ DIPLOMA Jamie Probert, aged 21, from Willenhall, is a qualified electrician with whg who completed his apprenticeship at The Skills Centre. He says: The good thing about these apprenticeships is that you can always get the evidence you need for your course from your work placement. As well as the classroom-based learning, the on-site work gives you great experience of working with different people and different aspects of the job
