1 Leadership Wyoming ALUMNI ASSOCIATION Challenge Institute - Thermopolis, Wyoming September 27-28, 2012 Thermop-ologies: Archaeology, hydrology, paleontology, sociology, zymurgy, and more ar chae ol o gy: the scientific study of historic or prehistoric peoples and their cultures by analysis of their artifacts, inscriptions, monuments, and other such remains, especially those that have been excavated hy drol o gy: the science dealing with the occurrence, circulation, distribution, and properties of the waters of the earth and its atmosphere pa le on tol o gy: the science of the forms of life existing in former geologic periods, as represented by their fossils so ci ol o gy: the scientific study of human social behavior and its origins, development, organizations, and institutions zy mur gy: the branch of applied chemistry dealing with fermentation, as in winemaking, brewing, the preparation of yeast, etc. Directions to Hot Springs State Park in Thermopolis: From Shoshoni: Take US 20W/WY789N towards Thermopolis. Follow it through the Wind River Canyon and into Thermopolis. At the only stoplight in Thermopolis, you will see a large brown sign adjacent to the stoplight, directing you to go straight to the Hot Springs State Park. Go straight. After about 3 ½ blocks, the road will curve sharply around to the right. Shortly after the curve, you will see either a curve left and head out of town to Worland option, or an option to continue on straight (effectively leaving the highway). Continue going straight. The high school will be on your right, and you should be able to see signage for the Park, and the Days Inn sign in the distance, just beyond the bridge. Go over the bridge. Take the first left after the bridge to enter the Best Western parking lot, or take the second right to enter the Days Inn parking lot. If you reach the stop sign, you re in the Hot Springs State Park, but you ve just passed both hotel parking entrances. From Cody: Take US 20/US 14/UW 16/17/WY 120 out of Cody. Turn right on WY-120. Drive about 82 miles (going through Meeteetsee). At the only stoplight in Thermopolis, you will see a large brown sign adjacent to the stoplight, directing you to turn left to go to the Hot Springs State Park. Turn left. After about 3 ½ blocks, the road will curve sharply around to the right. 2 From Worland: Take US 20E/WY789S going south towards Thermopolis. As you come down the hill into Thermopolis, you will see a sign on your left for the Hot Springs State Park. Turn left into the park. If you reach the only stoplight in town, find a way to turn around, and then follow the From Shoshoni directions above, from the stoplight back to the Park. Recommended Dress: Please dress casual and comfortable for the Challenge Institute, especially on Thursday afternoon! Please wear sturdy, closed toe shoes and we also suggest long pants for the visit to the Petroglyphs. We will be walking on a gravel road/path and there is also an option to walk on an uneven, rocky path to get closer to the Petroglyphs. There are rattlesnakes in this area. Also, it can still be very warm in the afternoons in Thermopolis this time of year, and you will enjoy this field trip a lot more if you dress in layers over a shortsleeved shirt. Please think business super-casual for Thursday evening dinner and Friday. There will be time after the Thursday afternoon field trip to go back to your hotel room and get cleaned up and change clothes for dinner if you would like. 2

3 AGENDA THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 2012 LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE INSTITUTE MAIN MEETING LOCATION FOR THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 27th: Hot Springs State Park 12:00 pm 12:45 pm Picnic Lunch & Welcome Kiwanis Shelter, Hot Springs State Park Directions from the Days Inn to the Kiwanis Shelter in Hot Springs State Park: Walk out the front door of the hotel, and go to the crosswalk at the stop sign. Cross both streets (there are no street signs or street names). You will be able to see the Kiwanis Shelter about 100 feet away, it has a red roof and the sidewalk will lead you directly to it. Come join us! 12:45 pm 1:30 pm Hydrology in the Hot Springs State Park Tour of Hot Springs State Park & discussion of events affecting the park Speakers: Kevin Skates, Hot Springs State Park Superintendent; Dan Moriarty, Manager, Hellie s TePee Pools and Spa; and Jim Mecca, former owner, Hellie s TePee Pools and Spa Directions from the Kiwanis Shelter: Walk across the parking lot behind the shelter, and then across the street. Turn right (heading East), and walk in front of the TePee Pools and Spa (the structure with a huge yellow dome-shaped roof - you really can t miss it). Continue walking East, past the State Bath House. Walk up the ramp, and turn left. Turn left again at the rose garden. This is the start of the Terrace Boardwalk (a roughly ¼ mile loop around the terraces). We will likely walk to the terraces first, and then tour the TePee Pools and Spa facility. If you arrive late and want to join us, call Amy Lea s cell phone and she will let you know where we are. 1:30-2:05 pm Travel from Hot Springs State Park to Legend Rock Directions from Hot Springs State Park: Leave the park, heading back out of the park over the bridge. Turn left on WY 120W toward Meeteetse/Cody for 21 miles. You ll see a large brown sign for the Legend Rock Archeological Site/Hamilton Dome. Turn left here, onto West Cottonwood, and drive 5 miles. You ll come to a fork in the road, and there will be a sign to Legend Rock Petroglyph Site. Turn right here, and then go straight, past the open range sign, on continue on the gravel road for another 2.5 miles. You will then see a small sign on your left that looks like a regular green street sign that reads Legend Rock. This sign is pretty easy to miss so make sure to be watching for it. Turn left at the Legend Rock sign, and follow the road through the main gate and down toward the parking lot and cabin. Park, and meet at the cabin. Note: There is no cell service at Legend Rock, and although the site is much more clearly marked than it used to be, if you re unsure you will find this location, please make sure to travel with the group! 3

Directions from Hot Springs State Park: Leave the park, heading back out of the park over the bridge. The road curves around to your right (either the first curve, or second, will get you there). Take a left at the stop sign towards Thermopolis (first curve, or second, they are about 50 feet apart). Go straight, past the fairgrounds on your right, and at the very sharp curve in the road to the left, at the green golf symbol sign, turn right onto Park Street. Go one block, then turn right onto 7th St., which becomes Airport Rd. Drive up the hill, and take your third left, at the point where you no longer have an option to go straight. Turn left onto US-20/WY-789 back towards Thermopolis. Go about 12 miles back to Thermopolis, and continue into town to the only stoplight in town. At the stoplight, turn left onto Broadway. Go down Broadway through town, over the railroad tracks and then over the bridge over the river into East Thermopolis. Turn right at the dinosaur symbol sign, just before Shorty s Liquor, and then a quick left onto E. Warren St. (From this point forward, if you look carefully, there are green dinosaur footprint tracks on the road leading you to the Wyoming Dinosaur Center.) Take your first right onto C Ave at the stop sign (C Ave becomes Carter Ranch Rd). Take your second right (third right, if you count someone s driveway) into the Wyoming Dinosaur Center at 110 Carter Ranch Rd. 1:30 pm - 2:30 pm Paleontology at the Wyoming Dinosaur Center - presentation & tour 2:30pm Return to Days Inn.
