1 HEARTBEAT PERFORMING ARTS CENTER School Year Session / Classes Begin Saturday, Sept. 12 WELCOME! With genuine warmth you are welcome to Heartbeat Studios. We take pride in the fact that our professional studio teaches more than dance, acting and singing by providing life enrichment to our students through the performing arts. The students at Heartbeat are celebrated and we make learning fun! We are sensitive to using only age-appropriate music, choreography and costumes. Through our Academy Program we help prepare dancers, singers and actors for college and professional careers. We teach discipline, dedication, commitment, confidence, self-esteem and many other life skills. We teach respect for teachers and fellow students and for the performing arts. All students are equally important at Heartbeat whether they perform for recreation or for a future profession. We have classes for everyone and we teach from the heart! MISSION Heartbeat s mission is to help students of the performing arts recognize the value of dance, singing and acting, respecting its perpetual rebirth in society. Encourage the development of each student s individuality and uniqueness through artistic expression. Provide each student with high quality performing arts education and enable them to experience the life-enriching benefits. Give the students opportunity to understand that the performing arts have an amazing history and are a universal language. Continually nurture their interest in the performing arts and to appreciate their personal journey to enhance their life. CLASSES TAUGHT FROM THE HEART IN A NON-COMPETITIVE DANCE ENVIRONMENT Heartbeat promotes a non-competitive environment where instructors teach by encouragement not by intimidation. We are a performance studio and choose not to be involved with competitions because we appreciate and advocate dance, singing and acting as art forms and not sports. Our focus is on correct training and technique by professionals in the fields of dance, singing and acting. We provide performing opportunities throughout the year for all ages to share the beauty and emotional and intellectual stimulation of performing arts with the public. We also want to provide long-term, life enriching experiences in the performing arts for our students. Hand-in-hand with this is our goal to develop the performers trust in dance, singing and acting, encouraging them to take on the responsibility of raising the bar on their own potential. The performing arts are more than a physical presence and we nurture a truthful, not artificial, connection between the performer and the audience. We allow the students to immerse themselves in what is happening and to internalize their artistic voice because it is only then that it is real. MASTER CLASSES Heartbeat provides master classes and workshops from local and world renowned performers, choreographers and directors throughout the year. This opportunity links our students with the world-wide performing arts community exposing them to original artistic work and technical training they may not otherwise experience. PARTNER STUDIOS IN JAPAN AND BARCELONA Heartbeat has established partner travel study and cultural exchange programs with the Escola Luthier de Dansa in Barcelona, Spain and the ARTN Studio in Tokyo, Japan. Students and teachers from Heartbeat and students and teachers from our partner studios visit each other to teach and perform, further enhancing our mutual belief that the performing arts are truly a universal language. We have learned much from each other and our friendships are solid. REGISTRATION & POLICIES Our policies and procedures help us uphold our professional standards. OBSERVATION ETIQUETTE / BUILDING RULES Observation of a class is from the lobby area only. We ask that visitors help us maintain an optimal learning environment by keeping conversations very low in volume. In addition, young children observing a class must be kept under his/her parents control and kept quiet. Children may not run in the hallway or cause any disruptive or unsafe behavior while in Heartbeat s building. A class in session cannot be interrupted for any reason other than an emergency. The only beverage allowed in each of our studio rooms is water for the students. All other food and beverage must be eaten in the lunch area and we ask that everyone remember to use the waste containers. Bottled water is available for $1 at the front counter. During warm weather months, we ask that all eating take place on the picnic table by Heartbeat s front door. DANCERS ETTIQUETTE / ATTENDANCE All students must arrive on time for their classes. Students must also wear appropriate clothing as detailed in our Dress Code section. We ask students to show respect for their teacher and the other students by not talking in class unless called upon. Students must turn off their cell phones at the beginning of each class. Only bottled water is allowed in each studio room and gum chewing in class is not permitted. Good attendance is integral to the progress of each student and each class. Students missing three classes, whether or not consecutive, prior to a show cannot perform in that show. These students will need to arrange and pay for private lessons with their instructor in order to get caught up with his/her class. If a student cannot demonstrate that he/she is caught up with a dance, song or acting scene, that student will not be allowed to perform in the upcoming production. SAFETY Students under 12 should be walked into the building by their parent or chaperone. Parents should let the teacher or front desk person know if their child is to go home with someone other than the person who dropped them off. Parents should arrive to pick up their child before the class ends. Students must be picked up on time and not left in the lobby. Parents should make sure their child knows not to leave the studio without them and not to wait outside. Heartbeat s teachers have other obligations and commitments and are extremely inconvenienced when a student is picked up late. CLASS BEHAVIOR EDUCATION Heartbeat is extremely concerned about the safety and well being of its students and staff and holds safety in the studio as a very high priority. Students exhibiting behavior in class that is disrespectful, unsafe or harmful or deemed as unsafe or harmful to any student or staff member will be asked to sit down and observe the remainder of the class. In some situations, if a student has caused harm to another person or his/her behavior is grossly disruptive, he/she will be asked to immediately leave the studio room and parents will be contacted. REFUNDS Registration fee and first month s tuition are not refundable for any reason even prior to the start of a session. Thereafter, tuition is not refundable for any reason except for prolonged illness or injury that is verified by a doctor s written notice, or class cancellation as determined by Heartbeat Performing Arts Center. If a student is dropping all classes at Heartbeat, a 30-day written notice is required and tuition is still due for those 30 days. 2

3 SCHOOL YEAR SESSION CALENDAR Classes begin: MEA Break: Halloween: Thanksgiving: Winter Break: Winter Show: Academy Show: Spring Break: Memorial Day: June Show: Saturday, September 12 Thursday, October 16 through Sunday, October 19 Saturday, October 31: CLASSES WILL BE HELD THIS DAY Thursday, November 26 through Sunday, November 29 Thursday, December 24 through Sunday, January 3 TBD Sunday, March 13 Sunday, March 20 through Sunday, March 27 Monday, May 25 June 18 & 19 (dates to be confirmed with school and may change) Heartbeat Performing Arts Companies Heartbeat s performing companies provide year-round opportunity to perform in front of an audience, and to work as part of a team while improving their performance and technical skills. Companies include Sweethearts, Beat Squad, Jr. and Sr. Tap, Ballet, Modern, Jazz, Break Dance and Hip Hop. Heartbeat also has performing companies in Acting, Choir and its highly regarded professional multi-discipline dance company, Vox Medusa. How to audition for a company Auditions for company members are held each year during our seven-week summer session. During those weeks, instructors observe all students in the advance level classes and at the end of the session, select students they feel are ready for company membership for the upcoming September-June session. Students not selected, are given suggestions for areas of improvement and which classes to take to be ready for the next audition period. Some students may be on the fence as far as company placement, and will be observed further during September and October before a final decision is made. Placement into Vox Medusa is by invitation only at which time membership of this company must be a priority above all other commitments. Placement or remaining in a company is based on a student s steady improvement of technique skill sets particular to each discipline. In addition attendance, attitude, respect for the arts, focus in class, and dedication are considered. For the integrity of the performing arts and student safety, placement as a company member is not based on carpooling arrangements, outside schedule convenience, or the pace of the advancement of classmates. It is based solely on the readiness of each individual. It is normal and usual that the transition from junior to senior level companies can take a year or two for students nearing the recommended age group cut-off. Rarely, does a student switch from all junior level companies to all senior level companies all at once. It is more common that a student will have some classes at junior level, while others at senior level, because certain disciplines for him/her may take more time for strengthening and confidence in technique and maturity. Once a student has auditioned into one or more companies, it is required that he/she also take one other core discipline in any of the following: ballet, tap, jazz, modern, hip hop, break dance, acting or choir. Company members are also required to attend all rehearsals and performances. Seven class absences (not seven weeks) during the September-June session are permitted for company members. If more absences cannot be avoided, company members will be required to schedule and pay for private lessons to get caught up on choreography. If regular attendance in a company class becomes too difficult for the student, they will be removed from the company. VOX MEDUSA MULTI-DISCIPLINARY COMPANY: Vox Medusa, directed by its founder, Kristin Freya, is a professional, award-winning company that has performed locally, nationally and internationally. Placement into Vox Medusa is by invitation only and membership in this company must take priority over all other performing commitments. Heartbeat Performing Arts Junior & Senior Academy Programs The Academy Programs are designed for advanced dance, acting and/or singing students who are interested in a serious and focused study in the performing arts. The Junior Academy is for students age 8 to 13 and the Senior Academy is for students age 13 to 18. Each Academy student must audition into least two Heartbeat companies: Ballet, Jazz, Tap, Modern, Hip Hop, Acting, or Heart & Soul Choir. These companies become his/her Academy Majors, or primary focus. Senior Academy students are also enrolled in the Pedagogy Program, which is learning the art of teaching performing arts to children by assisting classes in a chosen major. During the course of the year, the Junior and Senior Academies foremost project is to present their own self-produced production that is directed and choreographed by the students, that follows their unique vision. 3

4 Being selected for the Academy Program is a privilege The Academy program is designed to follow a college level curriculum. Academy students will be considered focused and serious about their studies in the performing arts, thus their teachers will expect more from them in class. In January of each year, Academy students and their parents will receive written critiques from the teachers regarding their participation in the Academy Program. The Academy Program follows a college level curriculum designed to: Develop technical and physical strength. Build confidence and virtuosity in performance. Create opportunities to develop creative voice. Build business skills in marketing and promotion for creative fields. Learn the processes of choreography of solos, duets, trios and large group pieces as well as creation in collaboration with others. Learn to teach through *Academy Pedagogy requirements by assisting teachers. Create open dialogue regarding style and perspective as young developing artists. Develop an eye and verbalization for critique. Gain new skills from master classes and workshops. Prepare for performing opportunities that may be available to students who are ready technically and emotionally. Prepare the students for college or professional performing or teaching careers. All Academy Students must follow the company class requirements for at least two companies, plus the addition of the Academy class. Senior Academy students must also add their pedagogy assisting class, which will be scheduled for them by the Academy director. Assisting assignments reflect students majors and years of experience in assisting in the Academy. Academy Etiquette Policy Please note: Academy students may be dismissed from the program if Etiquette policies are not observed: SR Academy students cannot have more than seven absences as a Pedagogy teacher s assistant. Academy students must be in attendance for all scheduled company performances. Academy students must wear appropriate dance attire for each class. Academy students must show respect and professionalism during each class and performance. Recognition At the end of each year Junior and Senior Academy students vote for awards for Dancer of the Year, Choreographer of the Year, Actor of the Year, and Singer of the Year. All seniors graduating from the Academy program will receive a Letter of Recommendation by the program director for college applications. How to Apply To apply for consideration in the Academy Program, complete and submit an Academy Program Application to the program director, Kristin Freya, at the end of each summer session of classes. Heartbeat Pedagogy Program The Pedagogy Program for Sr. Academy students involves going above and beyond simple instruction. It is a committed relationship between students of the performing arts and teachers of greater experience, expertise and wisdom, who will counsel, teach, and guide their development both personally and professionally. In addition, Heartbeat s Pedagogy Program aims to educate the students about the many faceted careers in the performing arts. Goals for this program have been built around deliberate pedagogy structures and exercise creative freedoms for the student. The program is designed to develop problem-solving skills and build personal confidence while developing their artistry in the performing arts. Dedication Requirement Due to conflicts of interest, over-lapping performance and rehearsal schedules, and in fairness and respect toward the academy members who are dedicated to the Heartbeat academy team ; Dancers, actors and singers who are selected to participate in Heartbeat s Academy Program cannot be enrolled in classes at another studio from September to our June productions each year. This policy does not include participation public school activities, except if the activity requires attendance at another studio. It is expected that students of the Academy caliber observe the same commitment toward what Heartbeat offers them in training, performance opportunities, professional connections, curriculum development, off-site events, time, expense and energy. 4

6 Heartbeat Musical Theater Productions Heartbeat produces three musical theater shows each year. Participation in the shows is optional for our students, but the majority of students do participate because they do not want to miss out on the fun, feelings of accomplishment, and pure joy of entertaining an audience. Students who are unable to be in a production of Heartbeat s are not treated any differently in class and still have fun and take pride in what they have learned. Our winter show each January includes our entire student base from three-year olds to adults. Our dancers, actors and choirs present a seasonal show that doubles as Heartbeat s anniversary celebration. Heart-warming and charming stories are selected in keeping with the holiday spirit. Past winter shows have included popular stories such as, Scrooged and Snow Queen. Our spring shows each June are presented in age groups. The matinee includes our Munchkin, Child, Youth and Junior level dancers, actors and choirs. The evening show includes our teens, adults and teaching staff. Our June shows are our most elaborate productions with stunning costumes, backdrops, set designs, etc. Heartbeat seeks license to present shows in June that are more epic and not run-of-the-mill. Past musical theater adaptations have included, Star Wars (courtesy of Lucas Film Ltd), Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring (courtesy of Middle-earth Enterprises) and Dr. Who episodes (courtesy of BBC-UK). Our summer show each August is an outdoor musical theater production that features only our Munchkin, Child, Youth and Junior level dancers, actors and choirs. The venue for this production is an outdoor amphitheater where guests can relax on blankets or lawn chairs while enjoying the charming show and beautiful weather. Past summer musicals have included stories such as The Wizard of Oz, A Fairytale Mystery, Cinderella, and Jungle Book. Required Workshops for Choirs & Ballet Company Members Members of Heartbeat s ballet companies and choirs are required to attend monthly intensive workshops that will begin in October. The workshop schedule for each group will be announced soon after classes begin in September. These workshops will be approximately two-hours in length and are designed to challenge each student and increasingly improve technique and performance quality of each group. The fee for each workshop is $15 and is paid separate from regular monthly tuition. Other Performing Arts Classes Offered in Heartbeat s Building Piano, Guitar & Accordion: Karen Johnson, a gifted teacher in piano, guitar and accordion, offers private lessons at Heartbeat. Many of her students are award-winning pianists who credit Karen for her inspiration, caring and effective teaching. Call for information on lesson availability and tuition rates. Singing Lessons: Emily Colay, Heartbeat s choir teacher, also gives private singing lessons. Emily s voice is enchanting and her professional background extensive and impressive. Her choir classes at Heartbeat are popular and continue to grow each year so does the admiration she receives from her students. Emily at emilyhtbt@gmail.com for information on lesson availability and tuition rates. Brazilian Capoeira: Matt Gangi, new to Heartbeat s building, teaches Capoeira, a Brazilian art form that combines Martial Arts, Dance, Acrobatics, Music, and Movement. Capoeira is played between two people in a conversation through movement which can take on many shades of meaning. Movements include kicks, dodges, and acrobatic deception to the rhythms of live instruments and singing. This game is played in a circle of players called the roda. In class, students practice all the elements that make up Capoeira. Classes involve basic and creative warmups, flexibility and strength training, technique and application practice and drills, group and partner training, music, acrobatic progression, dance like movements, intense cardio workouts, roda practice and open roda, and all the other multiple aspects of this great art.
