3 LANGUAGE AND COMMUNICATION STUDIES DEGREE MODULES As a UEA language and communication student you won t just become fluent in your chosen language or languages, you ll also get under the skin of the societies and cultures where those languages are spoken. You will learn to speak, understand and write with precision, variety and accuracy. You will develop the skills needed to engage in thorough debates, and convincingly support your opinions. By the end of your degree you will be able to demonstrate critical thinking, sophisticated expression and independence in your target language(s). You will also be able to enhance another existing language or start a new one, either as part of your degree, or as a non-credit module with certification at no extra cost. Choose from: Arabic; British Sign Language; Chinese; French; German; Greek; Japanese; Italian; Spanish; Russian and Advanced English. Year Abroad Enhance your studies with a year abroad and boost your employability by developing intercultural awareness, resourcefulness and flexibility along with your language skills. French and Spanish students could take up a teaching assistantship, work placement, do voluntary work or attend a foreign university; usually in Europe on an Erasmus exchange. Japanese students will study in Japan at one of our many partner universities. If you take two languages, you can split your year between two countries. If one of your languages is taken from GCSE or beginners level you will have the chance to improve your skills by spending more time in a country where your weaker language is spoken. Destinations include Africa, Argentina, Canada, Chile, Cuba, France, the French West Indies, Japan, Spain, Switzerland, Uruguay and Mexico. BA Modern Language(s) with a Year Abroad T901 (Single Honours); T90D (Double Honours) Immerse yourself in the advanced study of French, Spanish or Japanese language, or a combination of two of these. You will spend your third year in a country where your honours language is spoken. In your first year, the module Introducing Intercultural Communication will help you develop important tools for your degree. You will also investigate language and culture with modules such as Popular Culture in Latin America; Japanese Popular Culture or French Language in Action. In year 2 you will develop expertise in the areas that interest you most, choosing from modules such as Translation Issues Across Media; Subtitling and Dubbing; Intercultural Communication in Practice; The French Language Today; Reinterpreting 21st Century Spain; Japan Through the Eye of a Lens; Contemporary Japanese Society; Aliens, Monsters and Vampires: Latin American Pulp Cinema and Non, Non et Non! Dissenting Voices in France. You will then spend your third year abroad on a study or work placement. This will grow your linguistic and cultural confidence, and prepare you for the specialised module options of year 4. These include: Translation Work Experience; Translation and Adaptation; Technological Tools for Subtitling and Dubbing; Public Service and Conference Interpreting. In your fourth year, you can also choose any media and society modules not taken in your second year, or spend a semester researching a topic of your choice in a dissertation. BA Modern Language (French, Spanish or Japanese) Three-Year Option T902 In place of the year abroad, you will spend the Spring semester of your second year at a university in an appropriate country. Condense your BA in Modern Language into three years. You will benefit from most of the same module options as described on the left, but instead of spending a full year abroad, you will study abroad for the spring semester of your second year. The skills and knowledge of translation I developed at UEA meant I knew exactly what was needed when sourcing a global translation provider for BP. LAURA BARNETT, BA FRENCH AND MANAGEMENT GRADUATE

8 What is a good or bad translation? A UEA researcher has developed a new, practical way of appraising quality to help us judge and rank translated texts more objectively. WHAT S YOUR INTERPRETATION? LØŠT ĨŃ ŦRAŅSŁÅŢIŐŊ Dr Jo Drugan spent over a decade investigating how the industry approaches translation quality. She visited hundreds of translation providers, from individual freelance translators working from home, to the biggest translation provider in the world, the Directorate General for Translation at the European Commission. As a result she has been able to provide an alternative, practical way of understanding translation quality. Language and communication studies has come fifth in the UK with 74% of its research rated 4* world-leading or 3* internationally excellent in the Research Excellence Framework (REF2014), a major Government analysis of university research quality. The work we undertake within the field of language and communication studies has successfully positioned us at the cutting edge of research.
