1 City College Norwich Equality Statement City College Norwich aims to be: A College where everyone benefits from the wide diversity of staff and students A College we can all access with equal ease and dignity, enjoy a sense of belonging, and where learning and working have been designed with all of us in mind
2 With the advent of the Equality Act 2010, City College Norwich made the decision to undertake a root and branch review of its approach to ensuring that equality and diversity are embedded within the fabric of the organisation at all levels (not just within the classroom). To do this the College employed an equality and diversity consultant in April 2011 to carry out an audit of how well equality, diversity and inclusion were embedded into the operations and the long-term strategy of the College. The key points arising from this audit were: the need for more definition and clarity in relation to what equality and diversity means at City College Norwich for both students (10,000) and staff (1,000) a more collaborative culture, building on the work of the College s Change Teams, to harness the commitment, creativity and diversity of staff leadership which constantly and consistently states the ethical and pragmatic case for equality and diversity, explaining the link between the College s values and dayto-day work. The Beginning of Our Journey Agreement was reached on a number of actions in line with the above mentioned key points, all with measureable outcomes related to definition, clarity, leadership and culture. They were: 1. A development programme for the senior team on equality and leadership 2. A development programme for managers on equality and management 3. A review of the structures for managing equality and diversity 4. A project on embedding equality and diversity into classroom practice and schemes of work 5. A review of HR procedures 6. A programme of engagement for all staff and students 7. Some specific projects on various equality and diversity priorities The College agreed a set of objectives using the same framework that was used for its 2009 to 2014 strategic plan, identifying objectives in relation to Students, Staff, Systems, Sites, Skills and Stakeholders. These objectives were then prioritised into a two-year rollout plan and significant progress toward meeting these objectives has been achieved. Developments to Date During 2011/12 the College established a Task and Finish group to come up with a plan for rolling out equality and diversity training to all of its students and staff, potentially some 15,000 people. This group developed a training programme which has been delivered to all City College Norwich students; after which the students each made a me & Do pledge in relation to focusing on equality and diversity as an individual, as part of their team and as part of the College on a whole. A further five Task and Finish Groups were formed at the beginning of 2013 with the purpose of planning how the College will deliver and implement five of its prioritised year 1 objectives. These five Task and Finish Groups implemented their plans during 2013/14. 1
3 Next Steps City College Norwich Equality & Diversity The next step was for students (volunteer Creative Excellence Champions) from across the College to deliver equality and diversity training to all City College Norwich Staff during 2013/14. This goal was partially achieved with some 300 staff receiving the presentation. This opened up the way for mutual discussion between staff and students on subjects that can normally be difficult to raise and experiences relating to equality and diversity issues were shared. One of the above five mentioned task and finish groups developed a mutual, cross-college Ways of Working for all staff to adhere to in their day to day work. The introduction of the seven Ways of Working has been so successful that they have become part of our Strategic Framework for 2014 to 2019:- Open and Informative Respectful and Fair Creative and Positive Collaborative and Inclusive Consistent and Responsible Exemplary and Tenacious Aspirational and Entrepreneurial Our Goals for 2014/15 During the academic year of 2014/15 our Creative Excellence Champions will continue the process of delivering equality and diversity awareness sessions to the staff of the College. In addition each newly enrolled student will receive the student version of the equality and diversity awareness programme, at the end of which they will make a me & Do pledge to add to the many pledges already made by our current students. Due to the success of implementing the Colleges seven Ways of Working to staff, interest shown from students and the success of our student Creative Excellence Champions delivering equality and diversity sessions, another of our goals for 2014/15 is to introduce the seven Ways of Working to all students during induction. It is envisaged that by introducing the College s Ways of Working to our students during 14/15, that both staff and students will have a unifying tool to help build positive lines of communication and agreed ways of working between themselves and each other. 2

6 The statistics on the following page represent how Further Education student success is measured nationally in Further Education colleges: Starts Retention = the number of enrolments on long courses (lasting more than 24 weeks) = the percentage of enrolments (starts) completing the programme Achievements = the percentage of enrolments (starts) achieving a particular qualification Many students will study more than one long qualification as part of their programme so the number of starts is not the same as the number of students. This is called a Qualification Success Rate. In addition to the protected characteristics identified in the Equality Act 2010, the College has decided to add Deprivation as a further element to be analysed in relation to its students. This is measured in the main by students postcodes using the nationally accepted Index of Multiple Deprivation but also by a number of additional categories laid down by the Skills Funding Agency which are designed to focus attention on widening participation in education for those least able or likely to participate. 5
