1 Equality & Diversity Annual Report Every person matters

2 Equality & Diversity To meet the specific duties of The Equality Act 2012 the College has responded to the three aims of the act as follows: Aim 1: To eliminate discrimination, harassment and victimisation. We have developed recruitment and selection processes and procedures to enable the College to qualify for the Positive About Disabled People Scheme for two years running. This means that we have satisfied the Department of Work and Pensions that we are adhering to their commitments relating to the employment of disabled people. We have embedded Equality & Diversity in the delivery of our courses through the provision of a checklist to aid tutors with their Schemes of Work and Lesson Plans. We also developed an on-line training module to raise awareness for all students and staff. Aim 2: To advance equality of opportunity. We plan new programmes annually to increase participation of vulnerable and under-represented groups, especially in Family Learning and in the Supported Learning courses. Aim 3: To foster good relations We build internal and external partnerships to promote good relationships between staff, students and local communities e.g. linking with Bexley Council Education and Social Care Equality & Diversity Group. 3 What did Ofsted say about our College? In the recent Ofsted inspection (June 2013), the College was awarded a Grade 2 (good). They said we are good because Tutors and staff create a culture of respect and promote well equality and diversity. Learners with learning difficulties and/or disabilities make exceptional progress and successfully gain new skills, as well as developing personal and social skills. Leaders have established a culture in which equality and diversity are promoted well in the classroom and learners have a good understanding of the topics. What does Equality & Diversity mean at The Learning Centre Bexley? As a public organisation, we have a duty to protect people from discrimination and unfair treatment. Discrimination happens when someone is directly or indirectly treated unfairly because of a protected characteristic. The list below details the groups known as protected characteristics: u Age u Disability, Learning Difficulty or Health Problem u Gender and Gender Reassignment u Same Sex Marriage and Civil Partnership u Pregnancy and Maternity u Race u Religion or Beliefs u Sexual Orientation 2 The following information gives you a snapshot of our current position, with comparison data being used from the last two academic years. In each instance, percentages of students (numbering 6,596 in to 5,780 in ) and staff (numbering 349 in to 330 in ) are compared year on year.

4 Age The College takes independent enrollers as young as 14, and there is no upper age limit. The profile of our age 60+ students and staff is: Students age % (1629) 21.7% (1256) Staff age % (83) 24.5% (81) Disability, Learning Difficulty or Health Problem The number of students declaring they have a disability, learning difficulty or health problem has risen sharply. The staff profile has also risen, but not as significantly as the learner group: Students with Disability, Learning Difficulties or Health Problem 6.2% (409) 12.1% (697) Gender and Gender Reassignment The percentage of our male students and staff has remained largely unchanged. The College does not collect data relating to transgender staff and students. Male Students Male Staff 25.1% (1657) 25.4% (1466) 22.1% (77) 22.7% (75) Same Sex Marriage and Civil Partnership Only the first aim of the duty applies to this group, and that is: To eliminate discrimination, harassment and victimisation The College adopts a zero tolerance stance to homophobia and will actively challenge this when it arises. 5 Pregnancy and Maternity To keep mothers and babies safe the College carries out risk assessments on pregnant staff and students. Race: The profile of our Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) students has risen, while the profile of our staff has dropped slightly: Black and Minority Ethnic Students 22.4% (1477) 28% (1618) Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) Staff 16% (56) 15.5% (51) Religion or Beliefs The College is committed to offering a secure climate for people of any religion or belief, or none. Our sites do not have dedicated facilities for religious observance, but we are happy to make arrangements on an individual basis. Sexual Orientation We aim to promote a safe and secure environment in which LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) staff and students feel comfortable, welcome and confident to be actively involved in College life and feel free and open about their sexuality if they choose. 4 The College is not required to collect data relating to sexual orientation although we continue to identify any barriers and take steps to remove them. Things we do well We continue to have flourishing programmes in Neighbourhood Learning in Deprived Communities (NLDC), and Supported Learning (Students with learning difficulties / disabilities), Family Learning (FL) and Skills for Life (SfL). Our monthly cultural calendars are of interest to both students and staff and are displayed at public libraries. Our Equality & Diversity e-training module is available to all on the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) accessed via moodle on the home page of the College website. Conclusion We have made progress in the College but ensuring equality, diversity and inclusion across the organisation is an ongoing process with everyone participating.
