1 Back pack study guide Children and teens use back packs for many reasons: school, sports, jobs, musical instruments, food and many more purposes. Are there potential health consequences for carrying a heavy pack around all day? Studies have shown that heavy back packs can cause shoulder, back, and neck pain when worn for an extended period of time. It is important for youth and teens to learn what to do to minimize their risk of developing back and shoulder pain. Here are several things to keep in mind: 1. Do not overload the pack. Youth should not carry more than 15% of his or her weight. 2. The American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons recommends that a backpack hang two inches above a child s waist for optimum fit. The lower the backpack hangs, the more weight the shoulders have to carry. 3. Pack the backpack with the heaviest items towards the back. 4. Get a backpack with wide, padded shoulder straps to keep them from digging into your child s shoulder. 5. Use both straps to avoid straining the muscles on one side. 6. To pick up a heavy backpack, you should bend at the knees and lift with his or her legs. 7. The American Academy of pediatrics recommends using the waist/hip strap to distribute the weight when carrying a heavy load. 8. Use school/gym lockers or desk frequently throughout the day to avoid having to carry an entire day s books in the backpack. 9. Avoid carrying around unnecessary items in the backpack. 10. Plan ahead and only bring home what is needed. 11. Consider the purpose of the backpack and choose the best fabric and pockets to meet your needs. Learning about the health consequences and choices when selecting backpacks can help to avoid back pain. Source: Center for Pediatric Therapies. Accessed

4 Shampoo Shampoo is a hair care product used for the removal of oils, dirt, skin particles, dandruff, environmental pollutants and other contaminant particles that gradually build up in hair. The goal is to remove the unwanted build-up without stripping out so much as to make hair unmanageable. The most important step in choosing a shampoo or conditioner should be determining your hair type. For dry hair, select a shampoo designed specifically for dry hair. These shampoos contain ingredients that bond to your hair and help retain moisture. They are also acidic, and so prevent the cuticle from opening which would allow essential moisture to evaporate. People with dry hair should also use a moisturizing conditioner after every shampoo. If you have oily hair, select a shampoo with deep cleansing properties to remove the buildup of oils from your scalp which can cause hair to be limp and lack body. Shampoo for oily hair should not be harsh, because that can lead the oil glands to overcompensate and produce even more oil. If you use conditioner, choose one specifically for oily hair, and apply it only to the ends of your hair. Is your hair excessively curly, kinky, or color treated? Curly hair responds best to a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner designed for dry hair, while kinky hair is best treated with a shampoo and conditioner that's high in protein. High protein shampoos list protein as one of the first ingredients. There are specific shampoos and conditioners designed for color treated hair that help to prevent the color from changing or fading due to exposure to light or heat. Are hair-care products from the salon better that those from the store? Many drug store brands claim that they are just as good as the salon brands. Salon products and drug store brands can have the same ingredients, but in different quantities. Salon products tend to have more proteins and vitamins that help your hair stay healthy. The drug store brands may have these ingredients, but they have them in much lower quantities. So, if your hair is already healthy and you find that the drug store products work well for you, there is no need to spend extra money on salon brands. If your hair is permed, colored, or otherwise processed hair, it may be worth the extra money. If you are considering salon products but you are not sure about paying the extra money, try samples and see for yourself if you notice any improvement. The best shampoo for you is one that has a scent and texture you like and that makes your hair look good. Sometimes using the same shampoo, conditioner, and other hair care products for a long period of time you can get an excessive build up which causes the hair to be limp. If this happens, consider using a clarifying shampoo which removes the buildup of hair care products that can weigh down your hair and causing it to be dull and greasy in appearance. Try using a clarifying shampoo once every 10 days to revive dull hair.

5 Cereal With more than 100 kinds of cereal in grocery store aisles, it can be hard to choose a healthy box. In order to help you make a healthy choice, here are the key nutrients to pay attention to fiber, protein, sugar and salt. 1. Go for Fiber Eating foods with fiber helps us feel full and satisfied without eating too much. It is also important for a healthy digestive system. Aim to get fiber from whole grains they should be listed as the first ingredient instead of other sources, like inulin and oat fiber. Look for: Dietary Fiber 3 g or more per serving 2. Boost Protein Protein is important for building, maintaining, and replacing muscles. It helps you from getting hungry so quickly after eating and improves concentration and learning. Look for: Protein 3 g or more per serving 3. Limit Salt (Sodium) Eating too much sodium can lead to high blood pressure, a major risk factor for developing heart disease, even in kids. It is easy to eat a lot of sodium from cereal especially if you eat more than one serving. Look for: Sodium 240 mg or less per serving 4. Save on Sugar Look for sugar toward the end of the ingredient list (which means it has less of it). Also, watch out for multiple forms of sugar (and its many names, like fruit juice concentrate or evaporated cane juice). Many cereals use dried fruit that s been coated with sugar. It is better to add fresh or unsweetened dried fruit for natural sweetness. Look for: Sugar 7 g or less per serving
