1 PREVIEW LESSON. Previews the content of the unit, activates prior knowledge, and gets students thinking and talking about the topic of the unit. AUTHENTICITY. Visual displays are taken or adapted from authentic sources, providing models of English students will encounter outside of class. GOALS. Clearly state the communication goals of each lesson in the unit. PARAPHRASE. This languagefocus exercise combines skill building in understanding meaning from context with the essential speaking skill of paraphrasing. PHOTO STORY. An authentic corpusinformed conversation introduces memorable social language and foreshadows the themes of the unit, in this case, psychology and personality. THINK AND EXPLAIN. This purposeful critical thinking exercise requires students to support their answers with information from a text. PAIR WORK. This expressive communicative activity integrates the language and content of the Preview Lesson and prepares students for the theme of the unit.
2 GRAMMAR. Grammar is presented with clear explanations and examples. Presentations cover form, meaning, and use. The use of boldfaced color text ensures that students focus on examples of the target grammar. GOAL. Each two-page lesson has a communication goal, ensuring that students know what they will be able to do at the end of the lesson. PRONUNCIATION. A thorough integrated pronunciation syllabus ensures accurate, comprehensible pronunciation, intonation, and stress. FIND THE GRAMMAR. In these cognitive exercises, students demonstrate their recognition of the target grammar as well as its meaning and use. CONVERSATION MODELS. Short practical conversations make target social language, grammar, and vocabulary memorable. Photos support meaning and provide a stimulus for additional oral work. NOW YOU CAN. Each lesson ends with a series of guided conversation-based activities that conirm students achievement of the lesson s communication goal. PAIR WORK. The Conversation Model is provided in a conversation guide with blank spaces for students own language, permitting them to practice the model and personalize it at the same time. NOTEPADDING. Students notepad their own likes and dislikes in gerund form, reinforcing the lesson s target grammar, gerunds, as they prepare to do the guided Pair Work below. DON T STOP! Practice doesn t stop at the end of the Pair Work. Don t Stop! suggests ways to extend the conversation, ensuring that students use the direct object ininitives as well in the activity.
3 RHYTHM AND INTONATION. All Conversation Models are followed by targeted rhythm and intonation practice to ensure the comprehensibility of student speech. GRAMMAR PRACTICE. Numerous exercises provide contextualized practice of the grammar, promoting its mastery. BE CAREFUL!. Common errors are pointed out within grammar charts, promoting accurate grammar use. GRAMMAR BOOSTER. An optional Grammar Booster at the back of the Student s Book expands the presentation with additional explanations, examples, grammar points, timely reviews, as well as additional practice. PAIR WORK. Pair Work grammar exercises ensure a student-centered communicative environment in class. BE SURE TO RECYCLE THIS LANGUAGE. Wordposts of previously taught language support Don t stop! reminding students to re-use and recycle language over and over again, making it unforgettable. CHANGE PARTNERS. Students always personalize the Conversation Model with more than one partner, ensuring a variety of experience and helping make the key language unforgettable.
4 READING. Reading texts and topics cover a range of thought- and discussion-provoking subjects. FRAME YOUR IDEAS. Surveys, questionnaires, and other similar activities permit students to get their thoughts and words lowing, enabling luent and productive discussions. BEFORE YOU READ. Warm-up activities build expectation and get students thinking. COMPREHENSION SKILLS. Exercises check comprehension and build skills, such as understanding from context. EXTRA READING COMPREHENSION. The ActiveBook Self-Study Disc in the back of the Student s Book contains more reading comprehension questions, both factual and critical thinking, AS WELL AS even more reading passages and exercises for all units. NOW YOU CAN. Lessons 3 and 4 engage students in free discussions and role plays that achieve the communication goal of the lesson. Listening comprehension skills include critical thinking and analysis. GROUP WORK. Dynamic speaking activities enable students to apply the critical thinking skill of synthesizing information. IDEAS. Frequent Ideas boxes support students as they consider what to include in their discussions.
