5 Interdisciplinary Studies Degree Application Concentration Title Aspects of Childhood Development and Speech Description With a rise in the number of children born with Autism, there have been an increasing number of children experiencing challenges with their communication skills. In addition to Autistic children, many students in today s society seek guidance with their articulation skills. Having an interest to work with nonverbal Autistic children, I hope to better understand how children develop psychologically, phonologically, and physically. Having an understanding of the psychological and physical development of children will enhance my skills to bridge the gap between their communication difficulties. Along with this learning objective I hope to minor in Spanish. Due to the rise in the Spanish speaking population, I hope to help children Spanishspeaking students with their articulation and communication skills. COM 315 Phonetics Articulatory and acoustic phonetics; application of the International Phonetic Alphabet with vocal and ear training. COM 322 Nonverbal Communication Theory and research in nonverbal communication, including: environment; space; physical appearance, movement; eyes and facial expressions; and vocal cues. Nonverbal communication in personal, workplace and cross-cultural setting. SW 201 Community Social Services This course, the basis for all other social work courses, provides an introduction to generalist practice and an overview of social work practice in a variety of settings. Successful completion of this course is a prerequisite for all advanced SW courses. This course is designed to acquaint students with social services typical of most American communities: what they are, who uses them, their impact, who pays for them, and who works in them. 40-hour pre-professional placement required, intern liability insurance required. Transportation to and from agency and/or community settings is the responsibility of the student. FLS 333 The Sounds of Spanish A study of the pronunciation and phonological system of Spanish, with the goals of improving student pronunciation and analyzing native Spanish pronunciation. Extensive practice in phonetic transcription and pronunciation, as well as phonetic/phonological dialect variation. The course will focus on applying important theories and current findings in development to issues in education such as lesson planning, curriculum design, behavior management, motivation, an appropriate assessment. Students will also apply knowledge of development to issues such as creating actively engaging individuated experiences to deal with gifted students, students with diverse ethnic or cultural backgrounds, and students with exceptionalities or disabilities. PSY 476 Psychology of Adolescent Development Theories, principles, and issues of human psychological development emphasizing adolescence. Cognitive, social, and physical changes; their interaction. Intensive study of student's area of concentration, leading to a major research paper.
7 Learning Outcomes At the end of this program I will know what factors may influence a child s inability to develop communication skills. In order to assess students to try to better their communication skills, I must have a strong understanding of what effects one s communication. I hope to gain a better understanding of how children are affected by their psychological state. EDP 370 Applied Child Development - This course will educate me on the biological, cognitive, and social/emotional development which affects children's learning and behavior. As these factors affect children s learning and behavior, one can use these factors to help assess what affects some aspects of communication development as well. PSY 476 Psychology of Adolescent Development This course will give me a better understanding of how children develop from their childhood to their adolescent years. I will be able to take the knowledge of adolescent development and apply it to how a child progresses out of their childhood. COM 325 Anatomy of Physiology and Speech This course with help me understand the physical aspects of what impairs speech development. I will gain knowledge of how people use their verbal communication skills. This knowledge will help me assess children s development in their communication skills. At the end of this program I will know how to work with children who have speech disorders, along with uncovering the relationship between developmental delays and psychology. Learning basic psychology and development patterns will help me in understanding factors, which may lead to speech disorders. COM 315 Phonetics Having an understanding of vocal/ear training will help me in assessing what is normal speech patterns oppose to children who may need to seek further assistance. One must have a strong understanding of phonetics, as it is the basis for verbal communication. COM 322 Nonverbal Communication This course will enhance me with the ability to be more aware of nonverbal communication. This is important if I work with students who are nonverbal, since they will have no way to verbally communicate. PSY 475 Child Psychology Through this course I hope to learn the aspects of child psychology, along with how to work with children who may be experiencing abnormalities. Having a strong knowledge of the various psychological stages will help me when working with kids since I will understand their developmental process. PSY 476 Psychology of Adolescent Development This course will enhance my ability to teach adolescents. This is important because I will be working with children progressing through their adolescent years.
8 EDP 370 Applied Child Development This course will help me understand theories which will equip me with the skills to develop lesson plans, curriculum design, behavior management, motivation, and appropriate assessment for children. These skills are important in successfully working with children who have speech disorders. COM 325 Anatomy of Physiology and Speech I hope to learn about the specific parts of the vocal cords/throat, which is important in assessing children with speech disorders. Understanding the physical aspects of the human body is a key foundation to understanding verbal communication. At the end of this program I will know how children develop commutation skills. Understanding how children develop their skills is important when working with them, as they go through many stages of development. FLS 333 The Sounds of Spanish In this course I hope to learn how native Spanish pronunciation is used. Understanding this pronunciation will help me understand how communication is developed. PSY 476 Psychology of Adolescent Development Through this course I will better understand the aspects of adolescent psychological development. Learning about the cognitive, social, and physical changes among adolescence will help me understand the stages children go through in their developmental process, which may affect their speech. PSY 475 Child Psychology I hope to learn about the aspects of development such as physical, cognitive, and social development among children. Understanding these stages may help me link communication issues to a developmental issue. COM 325 Anatomy of Physiology and Speech This course will teach me how people gain verbal communication skills. This is very important knowledge in working with children who have speech disorders. At the end of this program I will know how phonetics plays a role in English and Spanish. This is important in assessing children and helping them with their articulation skills. COM 315 Phonetics This course will enhance my vocal and ear training, which is important when working with children who have speech impairments. Phonetics plays a large role in speech development; therefore it is important that I have a strong foundation in phonetics. FLS 333 The Sounds of Spanish This course will help me understand phonetics in the Spanish language along with teaching me proper articulation. This is important when working with Spanish speaking students as articulation is different between English and Spanish.
