2016 IPMA-HR EASTERN REGION CONFERENCE Coaching the Crew to Pull Together April 4, 2016

This workshop focuses on: Agenda Assessing your Playground Personality - no jumping overboard! Translating self-awareness skills to navigate rough waters! Leveraging work interactions tips to navigate rough seas! Asking The Corporate Nanny about communication!

A Corporate Nanny Challenge During times of change How do you self-manage? How does your boss selfmanage? Discuss with your neighbor Let s talk!

Catabolic Anabolic Controls by pushing and pulling Delegates fully (then points and blames) Gives information without justification or buy-in Self-Assesses Works in crisis mode Emotionally disconnects Uses left brain analysis Focuses on problems Takes advantage of staff Encourages others to take their own steps Project shares (becomes part of the plan) Shares (detailed info, gets feedback & buy-in) Utilizes others feedback Plans and develops, is future focused Utilizes emotional intelligence Uses whole brain thinking Sees opportunities Sees the true human resource

Being Self-Aware is Key! What type of kid were you on the elementary school playground? Let s take a look

How do you see yourself? 1. Need to make sure all is ok 2. Collaborate with everyone 3. Need to build trust 4. Appreciate communication 5. Is loyal to staff & company Like to manage by scheduling 2. Create and use timelines 3. Extremely dependable & reliable 4. Decisive 5. Sometimes nitpick the issues 1. Need to be seen and heard 2. Action-oriented 3. Fun to be with 4. Hate routine 5. Like to be in the moment Value education, intellect & competence 2. Operate from the gut 3. Seen as the subject matter expert 4. Like to offer opinions 5. Know it all

Who s Who Introducing the Playground Personalities

The Peacemaker focuses on people & smoothes the rough edges. The Peacemaker acknowledges & validates others and may go out of his/her way to help others at the risk of sacrificing his/her own needs. The Peacemaker demonstrates great integrity and loyalty, doesn t like conflict so may need to develop a thicker skin!

The Organizer is motivated by getting things done, efficiently and early! Schedules, timelines, processes, and traditions are the Organizer s bread and butter! The Organizer is reliable and dependable, expects others to be the same and becomes impatient when they aren t.

The Revolutionary sees policies and procedures as impediments to getting things done and would rather be flexible and in the moment. Action-oriented and gregarious, the Revolutionary is fun to be with, but it can be hard to corral that energy into a timely and measurable outcome!

The Steamroller can bowl you over with a thousand ideas and overwhelming creativity. Reining in the Steamroller may be a management challenge, but the Steamroller will be the go-to person when you need a fresh perspective on any problem.

Let s talk What pops out for you? How are the Playground Personalities relevant to the workplace? Let s Share!!!

Rules to Live By One personality type is not better than another Develop all four personalities in order to solve different problems and communicate with everyone Always using your preferred personality will not be effective Know that self-awareness leads to self-transformation not selfjustification Know that others don t necessarily react the way you do

Who s Who?... Apply the rule: Application + Observation + Listening = Accurate Assessment of Who s Who

Application Needs to make sure everyone is okay Lives by scheduling, timelines & lists Hates routine and prefers to act now & ask forgiveness later Values education, intellect & competence

Watch Closely Is polite; makes definite eye contact Gives clear examples; is exact Has vivid responses; may even tell a joke Gives complex answers; tells a story

Listen Up! I feel I think I don t like I believe

Change & the Playground Personalities Becomes The Avoider Becomes The Micromanager Becomes The Yeller Becomes The Dismisser

Why Do the Reactions und Personalities Show Up? To protect themselves To protect the process To protect someone else To protect their reputation

So, Two Things Get in the Way 1 Personal Fear don t want to get chewed out or have to eat crow 2 Professional Fear don t want to get written up or fired!

A Corporate Nanny Challenge It s easy to lose the crew during times of change so, how do we keep them together? Please discuss with your neighbor. Let s talk!

Here Are Two Tips To keep your boss, peers and staff from going overboard! 1. Know what positively motivates people into action 2. Know what pokes at people to act negatively

TIP #1: Know what positively motivates folks (Affiliation) Including people; make it personal (Structure) Making their point with short phrases (Action) Making it quick actionable & painless! (Meaning) Talking about the big picture and the purpose

Tip #1: Sample empowering questions to engage folks positively Who should we include? How do you feel about? What happens next? What do you think about that? How can we bite the bullet &? What don t you like about X or Y? What can we learn from your? How would that contribute?

TIP #2: Know what pokes at people When Working With Working alone and not asking people for feedback or support! Not keeping up with the details & letting things fall through the cracks! Not giving soundbites on projects & surprising them with bad news! Asking for opinion & ignoring the advice/expertise!

Tip #2: Ideas how not to poke at folks State the plan upfront and allow people to give feedback Ask for a 3-step process; set some goals upfront Show the work in sections or pieces, & build upon it Draw a picture/ framework and encourage a discussion

Make a Personal Commitment Think about your communication habits and decide which ones you are going to: Keep doing Stop doing, and/or Start doing, today! Share with your neighbor!
