We encourage the appropriate staff on your campus to review the attached draft, and would appreciate receiving your comments and feedback. Summary: This technical letter provides an overview of the Coach Classification Standard. The classifications in this study include: Assistant Coach, Coach, and Head Coach. Study Background: As agreed with the California State University (CSU), and California Faculty Association (CFA), a study was initiated to develop classification standards for coaching faculty unit employees. Currently, classifications and salary ranges exist for: Coaching Assistant, Coaching Specialist, Coach, and Head Coach; however, there are no classification standards for Coaches. The proposed draft classification standard was developed based on the analysis of Unit 3 coach position descriptions, and reviewed by campus HR representatives. Highlights of the Proposed Classification Standard: Coach classifications have been combined into a classification series titled Coach Series. Coaching Specialist classification has been eliminated. Assistant Coach (Non-Exempt). This classification has been re-named from Coaching Assistant. FLSA exemption status is Non-Exempt based on the U.S. Department of Labor s exemption criteria. The option to assign FLSA status has been removed. Campus Review: The draft classification standard is attached. Your review and feedback is critical to the development of the final classification standard and assists us in ensuring that the classifications meet operational needs of the campuses. As you review the draft, please consider the following: Does the proposed classification standard adequately cover the breadth of work performed by incumbents today and potentially for the next five years? Are the distinctions between the classifications clear and properly defined? Are there any critical core functions or work activities missing? If yes, please provide these. Are there any critical knowledge, skills, and abilities missing? If yes, please provide these. Is the language in the classification standard flexible enough to accommodate ongoing changes in the industry and the differences in campus operations systemwide? Coaches instruct student-athletes in the fundamentals of an intercollegiate athletic program; develop and implement competition strategy; develop daily practice plans; foster player sportsmanship; participate in in-service programs for coaches; keep current on coaching rules and practices; are responsible for the eligibility and academic success of student-athletes; demonstrate concern for the overall welfare and wellbeing of student-athletes at all times; and, have knowledge of, and abide by Title IX, National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), Conference, and University rules and regulations. While the Coach and Head Coach may perform similar duties, a position may be classified in either depending on factors such as: NCAA conference and division, magnitude of athletic program, scope of coaching assignment, staffing, budget allocation, and number of participants in program. The Coach series is distinguished from the MPP athletic coach in that the MPP athletic coach supervises two or more full-time faculty unit employees, and is excluded from the bargaining unit. TYPICAL ACTIVITIES: The examples of typical work activities are meant to illustrate the general range of work functions performed by Coaches; they are not meant to be all-inclusive or restrictive. Work assignments are based on individual qualifications, and the athletic program, and may involve other related activities. Coaching: Skills instruction; plan, implement, and oversee practice and workout sessions; analyze statistics and tactical data of opponents; strategize game plan; motivate and evaluate athlete s performance; assign player positions; schedule and manage intercollegiate matches. Recruiting Activities: Prospect evaluation; scouting; develop scouting reports; video analysis; correspondence; track admissions and eligibility process involving recruited student-athletes; plan and execute campus visits; manage recruiting database. Budget: Determine fiscal requirements and prepare budgetary recommendations; monitor, verify and reconcile expenditures of budgeted funds. Community engagement: Organize and participate in fundraising, public relations, and marketing activities for program. Other: Counsel student-athletes in academic, disciplinary, and personal matters and provide referral to appropriate campus resources as necessary; consult with university administration for resolution of issues; promote and administer clinics, camp programs or off-season practices; provide general advising, mentoring and support to athletes. ASSISTANT COACH Under general supervision, Assistant Coaches assist with the promotion and development of sport programs. Work assignments typically include some or all of the following: assist with the recruitment, training, and evaluation of the performance of student-athletes; assist with organizing and scheduling of contests and opponents consistent with campus and departmental policy; coordinate travel arrangements 1

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge: Working knowledge of sport; Title IX, NCAA, conference, and university rules and regulations. Abilities: Ability to establish good rapport and an effective working relationship with student-athletes, administrators, faculty, staff, and community; communicate clearly and effectively; interpret and follow instructions and guidelines; utilize problem solving techniques; and use current computer word processing and spreadsheet software programs, web browsers, and related computer applications. Experience and Education: Equivalent to a bachelor s degree in Physical Education, Recreation, Health or related field, or combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities. License and certifications: Current CPR/AED certification. Some positions may require a valid California driver s license. Certifications and/or licenses, as related to the position, may also be required. COACH Incumbents in the Coach classification independently perform the full range of coaching functions. Work assignments typically include some or all of the following: prepare effective game plans; promote and administer camp programs, clinics, and tournaments; monitor academic progress and counsel studentathletes; recruit, train, and evaluate the performance of student-athletes; schedule contests and opponents consistent with campus and departmental policy, and participate in marketing and fundraising activities. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge: Thorough knowledge of sport; Title IX, NCAA, conference, and university rules and regulations. Abilities: In addition to those of the Assistant Coach, possess leadership, counseling, negotiating, teaching and fundraising skills; analytical skills to interpret athlete s statistics, review game videos, and reports; strong communication and research skills; ability to implement risk management strategies; recruit studentathletes; and make decisions and recommendations regarding program activities. Experience and Education: Equivalent to a bachelor s degree in Physical Education, Recreation, Health or related field, or combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities. License and certifications: Current CPR/AED certification. Some positions may require a valid California driver s license. Certifications and/or licenses, as related to the position, may also be required. HEAD COACH The Head Coach is responsible for the overall management and administration of a sport program. Work assignments typically include some or all of the following: provide leadership in program priorities and initiatives; administer program budget; develop and implement short and long term goals for the program; and establish multi-year recruiting plan. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge: Comprehensive knowledge of sport; Title IX, NCAA, conference, and university rules and regulations. 2
