2 BACKGROUNDER: THE HEALTHCARE INDUSTRY IN PEEL AND HALTON REGIONS PEEL HALTON LOCAL EMPLOYMENT PLANNING COUNCIL JANUARY DESCRIPTION OF HEALTH CARE INDUSTRY AND HEALTH CARE OCCUPATIONS The health care industry consists of the following subsectors: health care services (health professionals offices, laboratories and home health care services) Nursing and residential care facilities Health occupations consist of the following: Professional occupations in nursing (supervisors and registered nurses) Professional occupations in health (doctors, dentists, pharmacists, veterinarians, optometrists) Technical occupations in health (medical, dental and other technicians and technologists) Assisting occupations in health (dental assistants, patient service associates) The health care industry employs many occupations other than health occupations, and health occupations are also employed in industries other than health care. An occupation such as personal support worker is classified outside the health occupations, under care providers in the social and community occupations category. 2. LOCAL JOBS AND RESIDENT EMPLOYMENT IN HEALTHCARE IN PEEL AND HALTON Local jobs refer to jobs physically located in the area (and so does not include jobs that have no fixed workplace, for example, certain construction jobs or itinerant cleaners). Employed residents may live in a certain area, but their job may either be located in their local area or they may commute outside their local area for work. The percentage figure in each of the cells represents the percentage of all jobs or all residents employment, depending on the table. 1 P age

Some portion of the difference were working in jobs with no fixed workplace, but the larger proportion are commuting to health positions outside of Peel Region. One can see that health occupations make up only a proportion of all jobs in the health care industry: the health care industry represents 5.5% of all Peel jobs, and health occupations in the health care industry account for 3.3% of all Peel jobs. The major portion of the remaining jobs falls in the business, finance and administration occupations category. 2 P age

Among residents employed in health occupations, Halton has a higher proportion working as professionals in health and a smaller proportion working in the health assisting occupations than is found among Peel residents. 3 P age

TRENDS IN EMPLOYMENT IN HEALTH CARE INDUSTRY It is commonly known that employment in the health care sector has been increasing, in large part because an aging population requires more health services. Chart 1 illustrates the change in the number of employed residents, comparing employment in all sectors and employment in the health care sector. The chart compares two geographies: the City of Toronto, and the Toronto CMA minus the City of Toronto (Peel and Halton make up around half of the population of the Toronto CMA minus the City of Toronto). The change is tracked in comparison to the employment number as it stood in 2001 for each of the following categories: All industries in the Toronto CMA minus the City of Toronto All industries in the City of Toronto The health care industry in the Toronto CMA minus the City of Toronto The health care industry in the City of Toronto Chart 1: Trends in employment growth, City of Toronto and Toronto CMA minus City of Toronto For both areas, the pace of growth in the health care sector considerably outpaced employment growth among all industries, and growth in the health care sector in the rest of the CMA (green line: 75% increase over 2001) outpaced growth in the health care sector in the City of Toronto (orange line: 42% increase over 2001). 4 P age

NUMBER OF ESTABLISHMENTS IN THE HEALTH CARE INDUSTRY Tables 5 and 6 list the number of establishments in the three healthcare subsectors in each region, by number of employees and by municipality. Each healthcare subsector presents a different profile of establishments by number of employees. services have a very high number of establishments, with a larger number of them having no employees, and another large portion having under 20 employees. There are very few hospitals, and those with no employees may well be organizations in name only. Among hospitals with employees, many of them are large, in fact usually with 500 or more employees. fall somewhat inbetween, with a fair number overall, with some of them of considerable size (100 or more employees).
