14 Technical i n form ation Every must pass the industries strictest quality control, prior to submission for certification by the H.R.D. laboratories of Antwerp. Carat The term carat (ct) refers to the weight of the diamond and is often confused with size. A carat equals 200 milligrams and is divided into 100 points. Therefore 1 2ct equates to 50 points and is generally written as 0.50ct. diamonds are available in a variety of carat weights ranging from 0.20pts to 3ct+. Clarit y Clarity describes the purity of the diamond. To determine a diamonds clarity an expert views it under 10 times magnification to find any inclusions or blemishes that may exist inside or on the surface of the diamond. The fewer inclusions that can be seen, the more valuable the diamond. The scale ranges from the highest grade possible Loupe clean, meaning that under 10 times magnification no flaws can be seen, down to Pique, the flaws in these diamonds are visible to the naked eye and are split in to P1, P2 and P3 depending on the severity of the inclusion. Of the 4C s, the cut is the aspect directly influenced by man. Diamonds are cut into various shapes depending upon the original form of the uncut diamond, which is called rough, and whatever the shape, a well-cut diamond is better able to reflect light. Diamonds can come in an array of beautiful fancy colours, such as pink, blue, red and yellow. diamonds however are only ever cut from the finest selection of pure white diamonds. These white diamonds are graded on a scale starting from D through to Z, with D being colourless and Z being light yellow or brown. diamonds comfortably sit at the top of this scale. Colour or the lack of it allows more light to pass through the diamond, therefore the less colour the diamond has the more it will sparkle. This reflection is achieved by the use of facets, adjacent flat surfaces, of which a has 89. When the facets are polished correctly, symmetrically and to proper proportions, light is reflected from one to another and then dispersed through the top of the stone. This relationship is designed to maximise the amount of light reflected out of a diamond and amplify its beauty. The proportions, symmetry and polish are graded on the scale below.
