3 Introduction This Mix + Match Diploma of Building Design is a new offering from Nirimba TAFE in conjunction with our Open Training and Education Network, OTEN. The Mix n Match delivery is in response to feedback we received from students that they wanted the following changes to the courses we offer: More choice in how, where and when they could learn. The flexibility of online study but also wanted some face to face contact with teachers and other students. The option to complete the easier, quicker or theory-based units/clusters online before moving onto other units. This enabled them to start work as soon as they enrolled and gave them a sense of achievement and provided motivation to continue. This course offers you the flexibility to choose how you study and complete your course. You get to choose how long it takes you to complete the course. The first task you will need to complete as part of the course is a schedule for the submission of your assessments. The face to face classes at Nirimba have been scheduled to let you finish in one year. You have the freedom to complete the course in a shorter or longer duration. 4 In order to offer this course as a Mix + Match option, you will be co-enrolled with our distance education area, OTEN. It normally takes a couple of days after you have paid for your course for your enrolment to be activated so you can access the online resources. All of your course resources and assessments can be accessed via the OTEN OLS (Online Learning Support). You can login to the OLS using your DET student login at Your login details should be on your payment receipt. If you have any trouble accessing the OLS contact a teacher using the details below. You will submit all of your assessments via the OLS and you will receive feedback through this system also. This course is offered as a Mix + Match blended delivery course. Face to Face class attendance encouraged but is optional for part time students. NOTE: 50% attendance is required for Day Time students. 5 About your course This qualification applies to building designers who undertake building design projects covered by the Building Code of Australia (BCA), except Construction Type A buildings. Building designers may specialise in residential projects, including new buildings, heritage restorations and additions or renovations; or they may also undertake commercial and industrial projects, such as factories, motels, offices, restaurants, retail or service outlets and warehouses. The Diploma is known nationally as CPP50911 and is from the CPP07 Training Package and has 17 units of competency that are required for completion of the qualification: 7 core units 10 elective units. You can choose any electives from the list of available options but we only offer the 10 electives in our face to face classes. What is a Unit of Competency? A unit of competency specifies the knowledge and skills, and the application of that knowledge and skills, to the standard of performance expected in the workplace. The Diploma of Building Design is offered as a blended delivery course. Attendance is optional for evening students while full time day students must attend at least 50% of the available classes. In order to complete the Diploma of Building Design, students need to complete three major projects and some online quizzes. The three projects are: 1. A residential project 2. A medium density projects 3. A Commercial project The online quizzes relate to the learning resources that the student access via the OLS. As part of the project work there are optional field trips/site visits off campus. Classes are set up as tutorials based around the project assessments and students are expected to complete work outside of class in their own time. An average student would need to work between 30 and 40 hours per week to finish the course in one year. This time can include 24 hours of class time plus homework. If the student chooses to not attend class then the time still needs to be made up at home. As it is a project based course, the student can choose how much effort they put into the work each week and as such how long it takes to complete. The class tutorials are based around the student being able to finish all three projects in one year (36 weeks). 7 If you are struggling at any time with any of your studies, you should contact your teacher or head teacher for assistance. The assistance will likely be in the form of more work for you to do via worksheets or extra tutorials. If you are willing to put the effort in then your teachers are more than willing to assist you to gain your qualification. If you struggle with the subjects because you fail to turn up to class or do not complete or submit your work, then you should not expect the teachers to go out of their way to provide any extra assistance to you. This course is designed to offer a flexible study option for all students. You do not have to attend all of the classes that we offer. In order to complete the Diploma in one year, an average student would need to dedicate approximately hours of time per week. This accounts for the time you will need to read through the notes, work on assignments, and quizzes. You can choose to undertake the entire course at home or to attend all of the classes face to face. We recommend that all students who are starting the course with no industry experience attend all class sessions. The part time course runs for three nights from 5:30pm to 9:30pm on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights at Nirimba Campus. The full time course runs for three days a week from 8am to 5pm on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Library In your first week of classes we will arrange for you to get your TAFE card. We will take your class up to Admin in T1 to get your photo taken and you will get your card a week or so later. If you already have a TAFE card you do not need to get another one. Once you have your card you should take it to the Library in C21 and get it registered so you can borrow books and use the library resources. This will save you having to buy loads of text books. 8 Web resources You will be required to become familiar with various Australian Standards during your course. TAFE has arranged for you to have access to these standards online. You can access the standards through the TAFE library resources website using your DET login details (the same login you used to access this moodle). You can access the library resources from then choose the Australian Standards link. You can download the standards and view them on your computer for approximately 48hours. After this time you need to re-download them to access them again. Resource Kits As part of your enrolment process you paid (or will pay) for a resource kit. This kit will be issued to you in your first week of class in Please bring along your payment receipt to your first week of classes so we can confirm your payment. Please label your items with your name as all students will have similar items and if you misplace them we will not be able to determines who they belong to. Student Assessment Guide You should download a copy of the TAFE student assessment guide and read it to understand what is expected of you in terms of assignments at TAFE. Student rights and responsibilities You should also have a read of your rights and responsibilities via the TAFE webpage. If you think you are eligible for any credit in the course you can apply for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). You can see an overview of the units by clicking on the Credit Pathways Tab. If you click on the My Course Progress link on the top left hand side of the web site, you will be taken to a summary of what units you have completed and what you have outstanding. NOTE: You will only be enrolled in the first cluster of units at the start so you will not see all of the units. As you progress through the course this list will increase.
