2 Welcome to Northern College Northern College is an adult, residential college providing educational opportunities for people aged 19 and over. The college has been graded as outstanding by Ofsted. The College is set in the extensive grounds of Wentworth Castle, and is a site of outstanding historical, botanical and environmental interest. Learners come from all over the country and we specialise in bringing people back into education, building confidence to proceed and the study and life skills necessary to get the best from a programme of learning. Learners often find that the experience of undertaking a short, intensive period of residential education is life changing. In its most recent visit, Ofsted said the college had realised its ambitious vision of providing outstanding adult residential and community education and helped to empower and transform the lives of individuals, families and communities. It Session 2 09-Dec to 11-Dec will focus on spelling, punctuation and grammar and developing skills in writing. This course has two, 3 day Session 1 24-Feb to 26-Feb sessions. Session 2 09-Mar to 11-Mar Level 1 Functional English [Free] Session 1 20-Jun to 24-Jun This course will prepare you in a full range of English Session 2 18-Jul to 20-Jul skills at Level 1. 5 Maths Managing Money [Free] 09-Sep to 11-Sep What maths is involved in looking after your cash? 07-Dec to 09-Dec From managing budgets to checking bills and from understanding interest rates to sales discounts, this 23-May to 25-May course will develop your money management skills. This is a good beginner course. Freaky Fractions [Free] 19-Oct to 21-Oct This course aims to build confidence in using 22-Feb to 24-Feb fractions in different, real life ways and extends to using decimals and percentages. This 03-Jun to 05-Jun course is intended to follow on from Managing Money and will help you progress to Entry Level 3 Functional Maths. Nature s Numbers [Free] 21-Sep to 23-Sep This course looks at the mathematical designs found in 29-Jun to 01-Jul nature. By looking at these designs, you will be able to develop your skills in division, ratios and measurement. This is a Level 1 course and excellent preparation for Level 1 Functional Maths. Healthy Numbers [Free] 12-Oct to 14-Oct Explore the maths to be found at your local doctor s 15-Apr to 17-Apr surgery or hospital. Further your skills in measurements and graphs by thinking about dosage of medicine, body 25-Jul to 27-Jul temperatures and vital signs! This is a Level 1 course and excellent preparation for Level 1 Functional Maths. Essential Skills for GCSE Maths [Free] 21-Oct to 23-Oct This non-accredited course is aimed at building your 27-Jun to 29-Jun confidence in fractions, ratios and percentages. Essential preparation before doing Level 2 Awards or GCSE Maths. /northerncollege

6 Entry Level 3 Functional Maths [Free] Session 1 28-Sep to 02-Oct This course will prepare you in a full range of maths Session 2 02-Nov to 06-Nov skills at Entry Level. It is also designed to teach you how to apply these skills to solve problems in real life Session 1 13-Jun to 17-Jun situations. The course will run over two, 5 day Session 2 18-Jul to 22-Jul sessions. Successful completion of the course leads to a nationally recognised Functional Maths qualification at Entry Level. This is excellent preparation for taking the Level 1 Award in Maths. Level 1 Award in Progression (Maths) [Free] Session 1 02-Mar to 04-Mar This Award will help you to develop your numeracy Session 2 16-Mar to 18-Mar skills. It will focus on learning a range of calculation techniques with whole numbers, decimals, fractions, ratios and percentages using the contexts of DIY and business. This course has two, 3 day sessions. Level 1 & 2 Functional Maths [Free] Session 1 11-Apr to 15-Apr This course will prepare you in a full range of maths skills Session 2 09-May to 13-May at Level 1 or 2. Learn how we have influenced the environment and how changes in land use has affected the foods we eat and the wildlife we see. Understanding Victorian Britain [ 45] 13-Jul to 15-Jul What was life like in Victorian Britain? Examine the social and political impact of workhouses, education, class, religion and public health. Sustainable Living [ 45] 15-Jul to 17-Jul This course looks at how you can save money as well as the planet. What can we do to cut down on wasteful consumption and how can this save the world? No specific prior subject knowledge is assumed, but learners should be able to use computers independently, to conduct their own research. Everyday Ethics [ 45] 22-Jul to 24-Jul This course will explore a range of everyday choices faced by ordinary people and will consider the moral, ethical, social, political, environmental and personal health consequences of these decisions. 10 Poetry Please [ 45] 01-Jun to 03-Jun This course is a useful start to the study of literature. Read poetry from different themes. Study the language and techniques used by poets and the meanings in their poems. Victorian Inventions [ 45] 24-Jun to 26-Jun Explore some of the fascinating, ground-breaking inventions that occurred during the reign of Queen Victoria; examine the social, technological and economic consequences of these inventions; and look for modern counterparts that are having equally significant effects on society. Edwardian Britain: The Rise of the Labour Party [ 45] 16-Dec to 18-Dec Edwardian Britain saw some of the biggest social changes of the century. This course looks at the birth of the Labour Party and how the voices of working class people were beginning to be heard. This course looks at the suffrage movement and the growing demand for women to get the vote. Cultural Awareness: An Introduction to Muslim Cultures [ 45] 23-Oct to 25-Oct Explore the realities behind some of the myths propagated about Islam and Muslim culture. What does it mean to be a Muslim? What is the role of women in Islam? Preparing for the Access to HE Diploma [ 45] 04-Sep to 06-Sep Are you thinking about going onto the Level 3 18-Sep to 20-Sep Access to HE Diploma? 11 Level 1 Award in Progression (Study Skills) [ 69] 14-Sep to 18-Sep This Award focuses on developing your reading and notetaking 16-Nov to 20-Nov skills, as well as developing the knowledge and skills for writing an academic essay. It is a useful course if you 13-Jun to 17-Jun are preparing to go onto further study, such as the Level 3 Access to HE Diploma or to the Level 2 Award. This course lasts 5 days. Level 2 Award in Progression (Study Skills) [ 99] Session 1 01-Jun to 03-Jun This Award develops your research and writing skills. It Session 2 29-Jun to 01-Jul focuses on looking at ways to access information from a variety of sources and how to use it in your writing. Session 3 13-Jul to 15-Jul It provides an introduction to library skills and how to use the Internet effectively for study. It will also look at ways of presenting research and information verbally. It is a useful course if you are preparing to go onto further study, such as the Level 3 Access to HE Diploma. This course has three, 3 day sessions and you must be able to attend them all. Level 2 Award in Progression (Combined Studies) [ 99] Session 1 20-Apr to 22-Apr This Award will develop your understanding and Session 2 27-Apr to 29-Apr knowledge of literature and history. It will focus on developing your researching, writing and analytical Session 3 04-May to 06-May skills using these subject areas. It is a useful course if you are considering applying for the Level 3 Access to HE Diploma in Humanities and other related courses. This course has three, 3 day sessions. /northerncollege

12 Level 2 Certificate in Progression (Social Studies) [ 99] Session 1 04-May to 06-May This course will give you an introduction to Session 2 11-May to 13-May higher-level research and writing skills, help you to develop good study habits and support you to develop Session 3 18-May to 20-May your computer skills. Our Level 3 Diploma students Session 4 25-May to 27-May say that these are the skills that they really value, and Session 5 08-Jun to 10-Jun students find that preparing in advance to be of real Session 6 15-Jun to 17-Jun benefit when they start Level 3 studies. Session 7 29-Jun to 01-Jul Session 8 13-Jul to 15-Jul Level 2 Diploma in Progression (Social Studies) [ 837] Sep to May This course includes introductions to Psychology, Social Policy, Literature, Criminology and History. You will also study how health and citizenship relate to society. You will be in College for 3 days each week (on a resident or non-resident basis) starting in early September and finishing in May. You may be able to get some financial support to help with costs. The course will particularly appeal to people who really want to develop their study skills and would be great preparation for Level 3 study. Successful students could progress onto the Level 3 Access to HE Diploma, or other Level 3 courses in humanities, social sciences or health related professions. Level 3 Access to HE Diploma (Humanities) [ 2950] Sep to May This is a year long (September May), full-time course that enables adults to gain a qualification that acts as a stepping-stone to university. Then bring your sketches into a computer to be further developed using a range of different tools. This course will look at how an ipad can be used and explore a number of productive and fun apps. Introduction to Web Design with WordPress [ 45] 04-Sep to 06-Sep This is an introductory course in creating simple 15-Apr to 17-Apr interlinking web pages made up of text and images. The course uses WordPress to explore some of the basic concepts behind a web site. Good IT skills are needed for this course. Web Programming using HTML and CSS [ 45] 08-Jul to 10-Jul This advanced web design course introduces learners to the use of HTML and CSS to create a number of inter-linked web pages. Very good IT skills are needed for this course. Introduction to Photoshop [ 45] 28-Sep to 30-Sep Edit digital photos using Photoshop Elements. Look 04-Apr to 06-Apr at how layers, filters and other tools can be used to improve images and add impact. Further Photoshop [ 45] 16-May to 18-May Explore some of the advanced techniques to manipulate 25-Jul to 27-Jul digital photographs using Photoshop Elements. You can bring your own images that need retouching to work on. This course lasts 5 days. Level 1 Award in ITQ (Office Applications) [ 69] 26-Oct to 30-Oct This is a nationally recognised qualification in 13-Jun to 17-Jun using IT. This week long course explores the use of Word Processing, Spreadsheets and PowerPoint. The course assumes that you know how to use Word, Excel and PowerPoint. This course lasts 5 days. Level 1 Award in ITQ (Creative Applications) [ 69] 06-Jun to 10-Jun The creative use of IT focuses on Digital Imaging and Website Design to create content for use within a set of interlinked web pages. 17 Level 2 Certificate in ITQ (User Skills) [ 99] Session 1 11-Jul to 15-Jul The Certificate includes further study of IT Session 2 18-Jul to 22-Jul applications and will include modules in Website Software, Databases, Multimedia Software and Improving Productivity in Using IT. This course is designed for those preparing to go onto further study on the Level 3 Access to HE Diploma in Computing. This course has two, 5 day sessions. Level 2 Diploma in ITQ (User Skills) [ 699] Start 11-Nov to Apr This course runs for 3 days each week from November 2015 until April Subjects include Office applications such as Word Processing, Spreadsheets, Databases along with Web Design, Imaging Technology and Desk Top Publishing. It is excellent preparation for those wanting to progress onto the Level 3 Access to HE Diploma in computing. Level 3 Access to HE Diploma (Computing) [ 2950] This is a year long (September May), full-time course that enables adults to gain a qualification that acts as a stepping-stone to university. In Computing you undertake subjects such as Web Design, Software Development, Imaging Technology and Systems Analysis. Level 1 Award in Progression (Social Science) [ 69] Session 1 08-Jan to 10-Jan The Level 1 Award in Social Science explores Session 2 15-Jan to 17-Jan society and contemporary issues. This particular course explores the themes of Drug Awareness and Session 1 08-Apr to 10-Apr Addiction. It will enable you to gain an insight into the Session 2 15-Apr to 17-Apr impacts and effects of drugs and addiction, on both Session 1 17-Jun to 19-Jun the individual and society. This course has two, 3 day Session 2 24-Jun to 26-Jun sessions.
