2 Headteacher: Mrs C. Lakeman Welcome to Reception and the Foundation Stage. For those who have attended d Auvergne Nursery some of this information may be familiar. 3 Reception Hours Breakfast Club At school we offer a breakfast club which is available in the morning starting at 7.45am. There is a cost of Please ask at the School Office if you wish to register your child. Reception starts at 8.15 am (parents may stay with their child until 8.25 am) Lunchtime: am pm Reception finishes: 2.30 pm Autumn Term Morning Routine:
4 ! 8.15 am School starts. Children carry out their morning jobs. 1. Put fruit in snack basket. 2. Book bag in box. 3. Coat on their peg. 4. Self register. Settle your child to a morning table activity. As your child grows in confidence the morning routine will adapt to help promote independence and learning. Snack - A piece of fruit or vegetable All fruit or vegetables should be prepared according to your child (peeled, cut or sliced). Please be aware we will be unable to do this in school. Lunch All children will have thirty minutes to eat their lunch and thirty minutes to play outside.
5 ! We are a healthy eating school and therefore encourage the healthy options. Please provide a suitable cold lunch for your child. Here are a few ideas: Sandwiches, pasta or pitta bread with healthy fillings; A piece of cheese; Yoghurt; Fruit or vegetables; Water or juice. We ask you not to give your child sweets, chocolate, cakes or fizzy drinks. Please name lunchboxes clearly d Auvergne Uniform
6 ! Girls wear:! Charcoal grey skirt or pinafore dress or charcoal grey uniform type trousers.! Navy blue polo shirt with the school logo.! Red sweatshirt or cardigan with the school logo.! Black school shoes (not trainers) with grey or white socks or grey tights. Summer uniform! Navy blue checked dress. Boys wear:! Charcoal grey trousers.! Navy blue polo shirt with the school logo.! Red sweatshirt with the school logo.! Black school shoes (not trainers) with grey socks. Summer uniform! Grey short trousers may be worn in the summer. Additional uniform:! Navy or red baseball cap for the summer and woollen hat for the winter. Both with school logo on.! Red or navy fleece jackets (optional) with the school logo on.! Boiler suit and Wellington boots to be kept in school.! Red or blue book bag. Please note Reception children will not need to purchase PE kits. Clothing
7 Children will be required to have school uniform. We encourage suitable black Velcro school shoes and elasticated waisted trousers. All items of uniform with school logo can be purchased from Lyndale Sports or JSSK. Other items may be purchased from any uniform supplier. Please ensure that all clothing is clearly and permanently named. This includes coats, shoes, hats, gloves and scarves. Where ears are pierced, small studded earrings may be worn. No other Jewellery is permitted at school as it can be dangerous. Let s get messy! We love being outside and learning through messy activities. So we ask that all children have a clearly named pair of Wellington boots and a boiler suit. Weather During the summer term children will need a sun hat and sunscreen - which is to be applied at home.
8 Health and Hygiene To ilet Children need to be independent toilet users. Accidents do happen, so we ask that all children have a couple of pairs of spare underwear and socks/tights kept in their book bag at all times. Illness If your child is not well, or is suffering from something that may be passed on to another child, please keep them at home and call the School Secretary (Mrs Bach) on prior to the start of the school day. It is especially important that children who have highly infectious conditions such as gastro-enteritis or who have vomited, stay at home until the condition is clear; this is usually after a minimum of 48 hours.
9 ! Inhalers for asthmatic conditions must be labelled and placed in the hands of Reception staff. When your child starts Reception, or at any subsequent time, it is very important that you inform us of any conditions, ailment or allergy that your child has or may develop. Areas of Learning in Reception Personal, Social and Emotional Development Our primary focus is to build a strong community within our classrooms and as a whole Foundation Stage. We work on building relationships and friendships and will further develop skills such as turn taking and sharing. Children will be encouraged to become independent with their dressing and toileting, organisation and planning. Communication, Language and Literacy Language is developed through communicating with each other and adults, such as through role play, group learning activities, and child-lead discussions.
10 Children will have daily story sessions and become aware of print and letter sounds in words. Children will have daily phonic sessions where they will learn the letter sounds and sight words. There will be lots of opportunities to help develop writing skills and learn how to form letters. When the children are ready they will be given a home reader which will be changed weekly. The children will be read with independently and then as a group. Mathematics Mathematical concepts are acquired through a variety of learning opportunities around the classroom. Through real life role play such as using money in a shop. Number songs and games. Mental maths sessions where children solve real life problems. Children will be learning how to write numbers, to count and recognise numbers confidently. We will also explore shape, measure and pattern. Understanding the World Science, Geography and History The children will be given opportunities to have first-hand experiences that encourage exploration, observation, problem solving, prediction, critical thinking, decision-making and discussion.
11 Information Technology The children have access to computers, interactive whiteboards, ipads, programmable toys and listening centres. Physical Development Physical development takes place in all our learning environments both inside and outside. The children will handle tools, objects, construction and malleable materials safely to increase their control and coordination.
12 Expressive arts and design The children will be given a variety of opportunities to express their ideas through a wide range of media such as paint, glue, fabric, clay, plasticine, wood and natural materials. We enjoy using our role play areas which develop imaginative, social and language skills. Music We will sing everyday, play and make instruments as well as listen to different styles of music and dance. Learning Journey Each child in the Foundation Stage will keep a record of their progress in a special Learning Journey. This journal is a reflection of their learning throughout the year, both at school and at home. We encourage all
13 contributions no matter how big or small and look forward to sharing these regularly with you. Parental Help All parents are welcome and encouraged to come and spend time in Reception. We welcome help in many different ways including reading stories, playing games and helping out on visits. Reading: Parent help is vital for this as we read 1:1 with every child. Trips: Due to adult-child ratio, parents are really encouraged to join us on our educational visits. If parents are volunteering on a regular basis they will be required to complete a police check form. School Travel Information Walking: Being active on the way to school is the best way to start the day, and gets the brain ready for learning. We encourage everyone who can walk, to do so. The school has a lollipop crossing each morning 8.15am 8.30am.
14 Bus: There is a bus stop right outside school in La Pouquelaye, which comes up from town via Broad Street, and back via Chestnut Lea. Please check with Liberty Bus service regarding the bus times. Pupils can get cheaper fares until they are 19 years of age. Car use: We ask parents NOT to bring their child to school by car unless there is no alternative, as the school gets very congested with traffic. If you are using a car, please drive slowly and take special care of children crossing roads. Please ensure your children remain with you once you have collected them. Starting Reception Each morning we ask that you settle your child. During the first few weeks, let your child know that you will be staying for a while and when eventually you do leave, reassure them that you will be returning at the end of the day. How can you help at home? Encourage your child to use the toilet properly, dress and undress, including doing up buttons, buckles and zips.
15 Teach your child to look after and put away all toys and books after playing with them. Give your child opportunities to play and share with other children. Learn songs and nursery rhymes and sing them together. Encourage your child to scribble, draw, cut out, play with plasticine, construction toys, dress up, help with cooking etc. Play matching games such as Snap or Pairs. Read books with your child and talk about everyday events. Towards the end of half term your child will be given a school book to take home for you to enjoy. Use television programmes to stimulate conversation and develop language and vocabulary. Use carefully chosen story CD s to develop your child s concentration and listening skills. Encourage lots of exploring play by providing where possible sand, water, wooden bricks, patch of garden to dig in etc. Ask your child questions and encourage him/her to ask you questions. Encourage your child to persevere with activities that they find tricky. Encourage your child to be independent, offering support and praise.
16 Home School Communication You will be required to register with Parent Mail for all communication. A form for you to complete will be available in your starter pack. And finally If you have any worries or concerns about your child, or their progress within Reception, please do not hesitate to speak with us.
