3 Mission Statement and Belief Statements Vision Statement of Volusia County Schools Through the individual commitment of all, our students will graduate with the knowledge, skills, and values necessary to be successful contributors to our democratic society. (Approved 4/14/92) School Mission We, the family of Spruce Creek Elementary, wish to excel at the on-going, ever-changing process of teaching and learning guided by a caring heart, a gentle touch, and a thoughtful mind. School Belief Statements We believe education is the shared responsibility of family, students, staff, and community. We believe all members of our school family should be treated with dignity and respect. We believe positive communication among students, parents, teachers, and staff is the key to a successful school. We believe learning is a dynamic lifelong process. We believe all individuals have a right to a safe and secure environment where trust, caring, encouragement, and support prevail. We believe in the celebration of our successes. 3

4 Goal Status Report School Improvement Plan Goal 1: To increase student achievement in the areas of reading while closing the achievement gap for all students. The number of exceptional education students in grades 3, 4, and 5 scoring in the lower quartile on FCAT reading test administered in the spring of 2010 will be decreased by 5%. Seventy-eight percent of our 3 rd, 4 th, and 5 th grade students, including our students with disabilities will score a level 3 or higher on the FCAT Reading test. Sixty percent of the 15 ESE students who took the FCAT showed improvement in reading. Goal 2: To increase the number of students in grades 3, 4, and 5, meeting high standards in math and close the achievement gap. Students in third grade showed 82% growth from the beginning to the middle SINI Math Test. Fourth grade showed a 59% growth from the beginning to middle test sessions. Fifth grade students showed 99% growth beginning to end of year. Eighty percent of fifth grade math students scored a 70% of higher on the end of year SINI test. Goal 3: Increase instructional time for all students by decreasing discipline referrals by 50%. Fifty-percent of black males will meet Category A during the 2010 school year as measured on the District Strategic Plan Objectives and Benchmarks. Spruce Creek Elementary School will implement strategies to reduce school suspension from 11.2% to 8% on the School Demographic Profile of the Achievement Growth Analysis. Spruce Creek Elementary gave out 165 discipline referrals, 40 of which were given to black males. These 40 referrals represented 24.2% of the school s referral, including bus and lunch referrals. 4

6 School Profile: School/Community Characteristics A. School/Community Characteristics At Spruce Creek Elementary School our goal is for every student to Reach your Peak at Spruce Creek every day. The administration, teachers, and staff work hard to create a family-like atmosphere of caring and support for the 710 students who attend our school. As a Title 1 school with 55.6% of our students on free and reduced lunch, the school provides classes for students in prekindergarten through fifth grade. We also offer classes for PK children with exceptional education needs and provide small class settings for students in grades K-5 with varying needs. Most of our parents work outside the home. Spruce Creek Elementary School has been an A rated school for the past 10 years. The school has also met Federal Adequate Yearly Progress requirements for the last 2 years, making it a school of choice for the Port Orange community. Spruce Creek has also received the Five Star Award for community involvement for the past ten years. Below are some important factors about our school. We have eleven national board certified teachers on our staff. Many of our teachers have advanced degrees and additional certifications. Our teachers spend many hours each year on professional development that is directly related to our school improvement plan. Both of our administrators have advanced degrees and years of experiences between them. Our PTA sponsors a full band program that starts with students in grade 3. We have a beginning band, advanced band, jazz band, a flute ensemble, and a clarinet ensemble. Spruce Creek Elementary School also provides a variety of after school programs, including Girls on the Run, A Chance to Dance, Gymnastics for Girls and Boys, The Good News Club, Bobcat Ambassadors, Peer Mediators, and our school News Teams. We have a strong PTA that supports our school programs and offers evening and weekend events. The School Advisory Council meets every month and addresses issues of concern, school budget demands, curriculum improvement, and general operating issues. Our business partners make up another important group of dedicated community members at our school. Local businesses support our programs with cash donations, in kind services, and various supplies and equipment. Our quarterly school newsletter highlights our business partners and thanks them. Spruce Creek Elementary School is a safe environment where students are encouraged to reach their highest potential. 6
