2 STEVEN HOLL Steven Holl is recognized for his ability to blend space and light with great contextual sensitivity and to utilize the unique qualities of each project to create a concept-driven design. LIGHT SPACE CONCEPT

4 SIMMONS HALL The concept or idea behind Simmons Hall is a sponge with pores or openings. This also serves the parti of this building. The main reason for this is to allow light and air to freely flow into the heart of the building.

5 PROGRAM

6 The Chapel of St.Ignatius was built on the Seattle University campus in It is small at 6,100-square foot, but it is highly symbolic, physically complex, and boldly expressive. It celebrates the life of St. Ignatius Loyola, founder of the Jesuit order of priests that staff and administer the university. CHAPEL OF ST. IGNATIUS

8 PARTI This concept also forms the parti of the building. The building takes the form of irregular skylights erupting from a basically rectangular building comprised of tilt-up concrete slab walls. This rectangular part forms the stone box while the skylights and bell-tower for the seven bottles.

9 St. Ignatius, the university Jesuit founder, was Holl s inspiration for the design of the chapel. The saint s writings described spiritual life as a series of light and darkness and used the metaphor of a light that comes from above as a manifestation of the divine.

Reconcilation Chapel This concept of blending physical and spiritual spaces with colored lights is the program of the building. Most of the interior light sources are tinted either by colored lens or indirect reflection from painted surfaces, and arranged so that each is juxtaposed with its complementary color. The result is a mysteriously glowing interior whose visual mood changes throughout the day and the year.

12 The chapel takes into account the processional aspect of Catholic liturgy, beginning outside the building with the bell tower that marks the entrance into the sacred area. The pool reflects natural light here and serves as one of the bottles of light along with the bell-tower.

13 Once inside, people are greeted by more natural light coming from one of the skylights in the processional area. As they continue to move further, the lighting changes drastically as various colored lights that enter from the other skylights replacing the natural light. >N

15 The arrangement of this chapel's nave is a bit different from most chapels. Chapels usually have a nave with straight columns of seats that continue the procession all the way to the altar.

16 The Chapel of St.Ignatius has the seats curved around the altar. >N

17 >N The chaplaincy of the university sought a more modern worship-in-the-round format so that it more closely resembles an auditorium style seating arrangement. This lead to Holl designing the nave so that it surrounds the altar instead of simply being in front of it.
