1 Stop Smoking Support Service Live a healthier life
2 Get support to help you stop smoking Did you know that you are up to four times more likely to quit smoking successfully if you use the NHS Stop Smoking Service and stop smoking medicines, than if you try to quit using willpower alone? About the service We are here to help if you want to, or are thinking about, giving up smoking. Imagine how much money you would save. You could be a lot healthier too. We understand not everyone who comes to hospital wants to stop smoking. But, we aim to support you, and help you manage any cravings while you are here. If you need some extra support to quit, there are lots of options available that can really make a difference. Using patches, inhalator, gum or lozenges will help to control cravings. Ask your care coordinator/key nurse if you would like to speak to the local smoking adviser. Health benefits Stopping smoking may seem impossible however, with the right support, you can become a non-smoker for good. Here are 10 ways your health will improve when you stop smoking: After 20 minutes your blood pressure and pulse return to normal After two to 12 weeks, your circulation improves After three to nine months coughs, wheezing and breathing improves Smoke-free zone Please remember you can only smoke in the smoking areas outside. All our sites and services are smoke-free. After 24 hours your lungs start to clear After two days your body is nicotine-free and your sense of taste and smell improve After three days you can breathe more easily, and your energy increases After one year your heart attack risk is half that of a smoker After 10 years your lung cancer risk is half that of a smoker Stopping smoking could also mean a reduction in the amounts of medication required.
3 What about the cravings? You are the expert on what starts your cravings, and you will come up with the best alternatives. Some people find that the time of day, or a cup of coffee is enough to start a strong craving to smoke. Other people are comfortable not smoking while in hospital and do not need support until they go home. Knowing to expect cravings related to habits and feelings can help you get ready for them, and plan for ways to get past them. If you always smoke while you re on the phone, for example, you can take a nicotine lozenge before you make a call. When you stop smoking suddenly your body has to get used to the change. If you smoke regularly your body gets used to a steady supply of nicotine. You might: Feel sick Get headaches and cravings for tobacco Feel angry or easily upset Feel nervous, restless or unhappy Find it hard to get to sleep. It might take a few days or a few weeks until you feel better, depending how much you smoke. If you don t want to wait you can use nicotine replacement therapy to ease many of these feelings. Additional benefits: Less stress Improved fertility Younger looking skin Whiter teeth Healthier loved ones Nicotine Replacement Therapy Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) gives you just enough nicotine to help you quit. NRT is safe for most people to use. However, patients with concerns should ask to discuss these with their nurse or doctor. NRT is free while you are in hospital. We can also refer you to community stop smoking services on discharge, to ensure you continue to receive support and free NRT.
4 Additional support CNWL Recovery & Wellbeing College offers a course to help outpatients who wish to quit but have little confidence in their ability to stop smoking.
