Saul and Samuel During and after the time of the Judges, the different tribes of Israel were ruled by Priests or Prophets. These men represented the Word and Authority of God to the Israelites. The most famous Priest/Prophet of this time was Samuel. Other peoples, such as the Philistines, had kings to rule over them. The Israelites copied this form of government and, moving away from having religious leaders as rulers, set up a monarchy. The first king of Israel was Saul. Read the Bible sections below. Answer the questions. 1 st Samuel 8:1-22, 9:1-27, 10: What did Samuel think would happen if the Israelites had a king? 2. Why did the people want a king? (8:19-20) 3. In your opinion, what type of person was Saul? Saul s rule began well, but soon his dishonesty caused him to be rejected at the rightful king of Israel. 1 st Samuel 15: What did Saul do that was wrong?

2. Why was the punishment of Saul so harsh? 3. Read 1Samuel 15:22-23 again. Fill in blanks: Does the LORD delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in the voice of the LORD? To is better than, and to is better than the fat of rams. 23 For is like the sin of, and like the evil of. Yahweh then sends Samuel to anoint a new king who would eventually replace Saul. 1 st Samuel 16: Why did God choose the smallest, youngest boy to be king? 2. In your opinion, what is the Spirit of God? 3. What has happened to Saul? How does David help him? David becomes a hero in the eyes of the Israelites following this famous story of the Bible.

1 st Samuel 17: How was Goliath different from the other Philistine warriors? 2. What was the contest that Goliath proposed? 3. What type of person is David? (17:32-37, 41-50) 4. How does David kill Goliath? 5. Why do you think that Saul doesn t know David, even though David had served him earlier? Saul becomes jealous of David s popularity. As he goes increasingly insane, he tries to kill David. David escapes, and spends years as an outlaw. Saul s army chases David, and in two separate occasions, David has an opportunity to kill Saul, but spares his life.

1 st Samuel 24: What does this story say about how we should treat our enemies? 2. How does Saul respond to David s act of kindness? The Philistines prepare again to attack the Israelites. Saul, in desperation, turns to sorcery to find out what he should do. 1 st Samuel 28: What does this story say about fortune telling, channeling and other forms of magic? 2. What does this story say about death and the soul? 3. What was the result of Saul s attempt to use magic? (1 st Samuel 28:20, 31:1-10)

Cultural Influence Read some actual examples and idioms from English writing that demonstrate the influence the Biblical story of David and Goliath has on Western thought: N Concordance 1 ies of God. "Suppose," he whispered to himself, "there should come from among them one who, like Goliath the Philistine of Gath, could defeat me and take from me my possessions." In fancy he f 2 u do right now. I guess we look about the way we feel in this world. I'm feelin' near the size o' Goliath at present; but your size is such 'at it hustles me to see any _man_ in you at all. An' you 3 t help himself, he has no authority over the mater. Wasn't it right for David to go out and slay Goliath? Y.M. Yes. O.M. Then it would have been equally RIGHT for any one else to do it? 4 1st LAWYER: We've been considered to be tilting at windmills. ANNOUNCER: -a modern-day David and Goliath story. 2nd LAWYER: I wanted to get the truth out. 1st LAWYER: We bet the ranch on it. AN 5 great King David, arguably Israel's greatest king, a young, gifted man, famous, popular. He slew Goliath, became this great king, became weak for Bathsheba, had a harem of women, left them for her 6 ke a little noise by drawing a bead on the system-level chip business in consumer electronics. The goliath is readying a major push beyond it tradition mixed-signal communications focus, adding a wi Reflections Samuel s philosophy seems to have been that big governments and strong governmental leaders led people away from a close relationship with God. What is your opinion about the role of government? Do governments draw people away from God? Can government ever be a positive force for good? Where do you draw the line between religious power and political power? In your opinion, is it good for a religious leader to also have political power? Why or why not?

David practiced an important Judeo-Christian concept of love and mercy towards one s enemies. Can you think of examples of this in Japanese stories or history? Can you think of examples in Western History where this concept was upheld? Have you ever had the experience of an enemy showing love and mercy towards you? Saul s life seems to have been one of good intentions gone wrong. If you could have given Saul advice on how to have a better life, what would you have told him?
