2 BCom Honours in Financial Management and PG Dip in Financial Management The primary purpose of the BCom Honours (Financial Management) and PGDip (Financial Management) programmes is to strengthen a student s knowledge and comprehension in the disciplines of financial and managerial accounting. The programmes are comprised of a specialised curriculum to prepare postgraduate students for a wide range of finance-related roles. The curriculum includes six topical areas ranging from management accounting strategy to financial strategy and risk. The programmes emphasises application, analysis and evaluation within each topical area as well as the application of integrity and ethics in a professional environment. This programme is UJ s leading provider of CIMA professionals and is geared towards preparation to undertake the Strategic Level CIMA examinations. Upon completion the programmes afford students exemption from the Operational Risk and Managerial level objective test. Students will commence their CIMA studies with the Management level case study. 1. Rules of access A student in possession of a BCom (Finance) degree OR any related degree with a programme specific minimum revised NQF level 7 competency in Accounting and Financial Management (i.e. Accounting III and Finance III) may apply. Applicants will be required to write a skills assessment during November and all applications are subject to a selection process. No student can register for the BCom Honours or PGDip unless they have completed their undergraduate studies. Meeting the minimum admission requirements does not ensure acceptance into the programme as all applicants will be subjected to a selection process as determined by the Department of Finance and Investment Management. To gain access to the BCom Honours degree a student will require an average of 65% for their third year Accounting and Finance modules. To gain access to the PGDip programme a student will require an average of 55% for their third year Accounting and Finance modules. 2. Skills assessment As part of the selection process for acceptance into the BCom and PGDip programme a skills-assessment opportunity has been scheduled for all applicants that apply. The skillsassessment opportunity is one of the tools used to select applicants for admission. Applicants must please note that the writing of the skills-assessment is compulsory for all applicants (there will be no exceptions).

3 Applicants that do not write the skillsassessment will not be considered for either of the programmes. Applicants will not be granted a second or special opportunity to write the skillsassessment opportunity at a later date. Two dates have been scheduled to write the skills-assessment opportunity. Applicants may select either date to write, but may write only once. The skills-assessment opportunity will consist of multiple choice questions based on a standard undergraduate finance syllabus. The test is designed to assess your current level of skill. Topics that are covered in the test include: Accounting Finance Managerial accounting (Costing) Tax Applicants do not need to study specifically for the skills-assessment opportunity as it will assess embedded knowledge of the above topics at an undergraduate level. If applicants would like to prepare for the assessment opportunity, they could revise the fundamental aspects of the above topics covered in the undergraduate syllabus. As the BCom Honours (Financial Management) and Postgraduate Diploma in Financial Management programmes are only offered in English, the skills-assessment opportunity can only be written in English. Applicants must write the skillsassessment for both their first and second choice in case they are not successful in either one application. Applicants should bring proof of identity (ID or student card), writing materials (pencil, sharpener and eraser) and a financial calculator to the assessment opportunity. Applicants must know their student number, as only your student number and surname will be written on the answer sheet. Paper will be provided. Closing date for applications The closing date is the last Friday of October at 12:00 annually for foreign (i.e. non-south African resident) applicants and for South African resident applicants for study in the following academic year. 4 Pages/home.aspx. 4. Application and selection process Only online applications will be considered. More information regarding the application process is available from: StudyatUJ/StudentEnrolmentCentre/ ApplicationProcess/Pages/home.aspx Failure to submit all the required documentation or submitting your application late will result in your application not being considered. All prospective applicants will be subjected to a selection process. The selection process includes the skillsassessment opportunity which will take place during November (dates stated above) and is compulsory for all applicants. The date and time of the skills-assessment will be confirmed with applicants via the address provided on their application (Please ensure that you provide the correct address when submitting your application). Prospective applicants must please note that there will only be one round of skills-assessment opportunities. Applicants that are not successful in their application will be routed to the Bridging Programme in Financial Management. Please consult the information document regarding the Bridging Programme in Financial Management. 5. Registration fees Registration details for 2017 will be communicated to successful applicants. Please do not contact the department regarding your application status as the department does not deal with administration of applications and registrations. Application and registration admin is dealt with by the Faculty of Economic and Financial Sciences at A-Ring 2. A registration deposit must be paid in early January each year. The exact cost of the programmes can be obtained from the Faculty. The course fees for the 2017 BCom Honours (Financial Management) programme and Postgraduate Diploma in Financial Management are provided by the Faculty in a separate brochure.

Commencement of lectures BCom Honours (Financial Management) and Postgraduate Diploma in Financial Management lectures will commence the first week of February Successful applicants will be supplied with a detailed programme, timetable and booklist when they receive their acceptance letters via Curriculum The BCom Honours (Financial Management) and Postgraduate Diploma in Financial Management programme is presented on a full-time basis over one year only. All classes are during the day. Students have to pass all six modules independently 8. Module information to graduate with the BCom Honours (Financial Management) degree. Fundamentally there is no difference between the BCom Honours (Financial Management) and the PGDip (Financial Management) other than the PGDip programme does not have a Research module. The PGDip programme caters for candidates that want to pursue a professional registration with CIMA, while the BCom Honours caters for students that have an interest in research and are considering completing their Masters degree. The PGDip programme allows for articulation into the Masters programme by completing the Research module as a bridging programme. 6 9. Language medium Lectures and examinations will only be presented in English. 10. Lectures and programme Lectures will be presented by fulltime academics and occasional guest lecturers. Accepted applicants are expected to attend lectures regularly and an attendance register may be taken at each class. The programme is not suitable for distance learning or correspondence applicants. The programme is only available on a fulltime basis. In addition to lectures, there will also be tutorial classes to assist students with the material covered in the lecture. Details of the tutorial classes will be communicated by the lecturer at the start of each module 11. Prescribed material The prescribed textbooks are the BPP CIMA handbook series. The latest edition is recommended. 12. Assessment Students will complete a number of assessments throughout the duration of each module. Assessments may take the form of written assessment opportunities (i.e. tests), as well as class assessments, assignments and/or projects. A last assessment opportunity in the form of an examination will be completed at the end of each module 13. Application procedures Applications for the 2017 academic year will close on the last Friday of October. The selection process will take place during November and students will be advised of the outcome during December. No late application will be considered. Bridging Programme Candidates that did not complete Financial Management as a major subject or did not meet the minimum admission requirements in their undergraduate degree can complete the Bridging Programme in Financial Management.
